Chapter 339 Ugly

"Shut it! Do you even know who you're messing with? You all got a death wish or something?" Michael rarely lost his cool like this.

What Michael said was straight-up nonsense. I mean, come on, we're all equals now, and free speech is a thing. Threatening someone's life over words? That was just dumb and illegal. Did he really think his cash let him do whatever he wanted?

A girl refuted, "Crap! Who do you think you are? We're in a rule of law society, not a slavery society."

Michael, usually a chill dude, didn't snap back at the girl. He just looked pissed and kept quiet. Guess he realized he went overboard and didn't wanna make it worse.

"Step aside; I'm not here for you," Jenny shot Michael a death glare and then yelled, totally wrecking that sweet and classy image she had going.

Maybe Jenny was never really gentle; it was all just an act to fool people, one of her many masks.

"So, who you lookin' for? Me? Sorry, lady, but I ain't into old chicks. Just the thought keeps me up at night," Daniel said, hands in his pockets, swaggering a few steps forward, giving Jenny a once-over before tilting his head back and whistling.

I stared at Daniel, totally shocked. Couldn't believe those words came outta his mouth. His almost thug-like vibe was something I'd never seen in the twenty-some years I'd known him. Seeing this side of Daniel was kinda wild.

Rachel nudged me and I turned to see her. She raised her chin proudly and said with a smirk, "Jane, my future boyfriend's pretty awesome, right? I taught him!"

I winked at her. Not bad, Daniel was definitely stepping up his game.

I've heard this saying: a mom spends over twenty years raising a son, but another woman can change him in just three minutes. Seems like there's some truth to that.

Zoe and Daniel had been tangled up for years, ending up as enemies, neither budging. But Rachel, in no time, had changed Daniel. Maybe what she and Daniel had was the real deal.

Kinda like me, who grew up all comfy, always running to my parents when things got tough. Since Brad came into my life, I've turned into a fierce protector of my turf. Anyone who tried to mess with it would face my wrath; I'd chase 'em off without mercy.

In that way, Daniel and I were the same, willing to change for someone we cared about.

Today, right now, Jenny barged in all aggressive. Using Brad's birthday as an excuse, she was really trying to snatch him away, basically declaring war on me.

I thought, 'What gives Jenny the right to declare war on me? Who gave her the guts? Picking such an important day to stir up trouble; does she really think she's clever?'

Sometimes I really doubted if her feelings for Brad were real. Isn't true love supposed to be about doing anything for the person you love? Jenny chose to make a scene in front of everyone, trying to blow things up. I couldn't wrap my head around her way of loving someone.

Maybe Jenny just couldn't handle the fact that someone as awesome as Brad wasn't hers but was instead head over heels for someone like me, who didn't have her fancy background or cash. She just couldn't believe it.

In other words, she was used to having the best of everything and everyone, and she was willing to do whatever it took to snag Brad, without thinking about the fallout.

Everyone's got pride, and so did Jenny. Born with a silver spoon, she'd been admired her whole life. Now, getting dissed by someone younger and less "important," especially being called an old lady over and over, was driving her nuts. She probably hadn't been this pissed off since forever.

Jenny's usually composed face twisted, her muscles twitching like crazy. Her right hand was twisting the hem of her red dress into a bunch of tiny wrinkles.

I had a gut feeling Jenny was about to pull something drastic. She wouldn't show up with all this drama just to see Brad. She must've planned this out. To me, she was not that lovesick.

Jenny said, "Brad, I'm here for you. You're being a coward hiding behind a bunch of losers. You're a professor at National Capital University; don't make me lose respect for you."

Her roar shut everyone up.

Jenny, humiliated and furious, finally dropped her act, showing her true, nasty self. Her hysterical look was so ugly. Her words were so trashy.

Jenny's outburst stunned everyone. A little girl munching on a meat skewer froze, eyes wide, forgetting to take another bite.

"Oh my God! Did she just diss us?" The student manning the grill, who had a short fuse, got mad hearing Jenny insult both the students and the teacher. He jumped up, ready to charge at her. "I don't hit women, but that doesn't mean I'll let a woman run wild. You want a shouting match? Bring it on."

This student wasn't tall but was pretty solid. His charging motion was like a lit firecracker.

As he walked past Brad, who was drunk and barely coherent, Brad suddenly reached out, grabbed his arm, pulled him back, and used the momentum to hoist himself up.

"Mr. Pitt, you don't need to move. Just stay in Jane's arms. I'll handle this."

But Brad wouldn't let anyone disrespect him, even when drunk. Brad's earlier act of weakness was just to mess with me. When it was time to step up, he wouldn't pretend to be weak and leave the fight to others.

Brad stood up and walked over, his body swaying a bit. I quietly stood on his right, holding his arm to steady him, making him look as sharp and upright as usual.

Brad said, "You lower yourself to come here and argue with 'losers.' What do you want from me, calling me a coward? If you're just here to cause trouble, you might as well leave. Given our status, we don't deserve to be in the same space as you."

Seeing Brad appear, Jenny froze. She clenched her fists, and then her anger turned back into deep affection.

I originally wanted Brad to wear a suit. Since it was a casual gathering, he wore a simple T-shirt and jeans with off-white sneakers; he looked like a youthful, vibrant young man.
