Chapter 375 Hard to Endure
I had my phone in my left hand, turned on the camera, and made a silly face with my right hand on my cheek. I captured my fresh-out-of-the-shower look and sent it to Brad.
He shot back instantly with an emoji of a face with heart eyes and drool.
Brad: [Trying to tempt me?]
Such a cheesy Brad, but I like it.
Jane: [Nope, you asked if I was asleep. Just letting you know I'm heading to bed now.]
I stuck my tongue out playfully, pretending to be all innocent. Then it hit me—I was holding a cold phone screen, not looking into Brad's fiery eyes. My shoulders slumped. What a waste of a good expression.
Before boarding, Brad sent me another message, saying he was turning off his phone. This time, he was headed to Silverbrook City.
Silverbrook City gave me as much of a headache as Jenny did.
Yep, the same Silverbrook City where Jenny saved Brad, the place I both hated and felt lucky about.
I felt lucky because Brad was safe and sound, but I hated it because Jenny, who I wanted to see as a lifesaver, was always after my man and would stop at nothing to get him.
If I could, I'd wish everything in Silverbrook City was just a bad dream.
After saying goodbye to Brad, I saw a new update on my Facebook feed. It was a shocker.
It was from Jenny.
The photo showed an airplane cabin. Jenny was sitting by the window, next to Brad in a black suit, sitting upright and looking straight ahead. Next to them was a tall, thin guy with a blurry face, probably Michael, the one who looked after Jenny.
Brad had mentioned this guy's name before.
Looks like Jenny took Brad's advice to heart, knowing she couldn't rely on him, so she brought someone else along.
Jenny was grinning at the camera like her dream had come true.
Her caption was her usual cheesy line: [If the person traveling with me is you, I'd go to the ends of the earth, not caring when we return.]
I thought, 'Why should my man travel endlessly with you? How shameless. If Brad comes back an hour late, I'd go looking for him. Jenny, just give it up.'
I couldn't get it. It was just a plane ride together. Brad didn't even look at her, yet she eagerly posted an update. What exactly was Jenny showing off, and what was there to be so proud of?
Jenny started causing trouble as soon as she got on the plane; she really knew how to stir things up.
Time and again, Jenny faced disappointment and rejection, yet she still kept pestering Brad. Didn't she feel embarrassed?
Jenny's update had been up for a while, with no comments or likes, clearly meant for me alone.
Fine, I'd screenshot and save it.
Since Jenny was the client, I couldn't comment directly, but I couldn't swallow this anger. So, I posted an update just like hers; it was a selfie of Brad and me holding hands on campus.
Jane: [He said falling in love with me is for a lifetime; I'm so lucky.]
Jenny's petty update was visible only to me, but I'll be generous and let everyone see mine.
I knew Jenny couldn't see the update during the flight, but I still fantasized about her angry expression when she saw it, and it made me happy for a bit.
I was about to sleep, but Jenny's update successfully drove away my drowsiness. Living alone was really boring. I fiddled with my phone for a while, still feeling bored, so I posted another update: [Feeling so bored.]
I posted with a picture of the two half-dead potted plants on my apartment windowsill.
Within three minutes, Mindy responded, quickly sending me a private message.
Mindy: [You're back at the apartment?]
Jane: [I am alone in an empty room, so lonely.] I played the pity card.
Playing the pity card was useless. Mindy had just married Louis; they were in their honeymoon phase. No way she would leave Louis to come to school to keep me company.
Mindy: [Why did you move back? Got kicked out? It's only been a few days.] Mindy's words were infuriating.
Jane: [If anyone got kicked out, it wouldn't be me. How long has it been since we last met, and you're already cursing me.]
I thought of a mischievous idea.
Jane: [Is Louis there? Let me talk to him. It's been so long; I really miss him.]
I thought, 'Let Mindy be arrogant with me; let's see how I annoy her.'
Mindy was indeed angry and yelled at me, "Louis is mine; why should he talk to you? Not even a word. If you're bored, go bother the police; they'll definitely have something for you to do. Or just wash up and go to sleep; stop thinking about my Louis."
Mindy sent a long voice message, and I could hear Louis's magnetic laughter and Mindy's coquettish voice in the background. Clearly, the two were being intimate in bed.
In the end, I still fell asleep, but without Brad's embrace, I still felt a bit cold.
When I woke up in the morning, there was a bit of fog on the corner of the window, and the room was chilly, indicating that the temperature outside had dropped again.
Winter was really a tough season.
I couldn't help but think of Brad, wondering if it was cold in Silverbrook City. He left behind a lot of the things I prepared for him; would he have enough warm clothes?
I reached for the phone and dialed the familiar number, just about to call when I remembered Brad had just landed in the early morning. He must be resting now, so I gave up on calling him.
I exited the call screen and opened Facebook.
Pinned at the top were three messages from Brad.
Brad: [Landed safely, all good. Sleep tight and remember to think of me.]
Brad: [Honey, your luck is for a lifetime; I promise.]
Brad: [No matter what happens, just trust me.]
The last message was a bit abrupt; Brad must have known something and sent it to comfort me.
I pressed the phone to my chest, feeling warm.
