Chapter 398 Forever Lost
The main topic was still about Jenny and her wild antics, along with our usual sense of frustration and helplessness. After chatting, we promised to hit the books and become people who could control our own destinies, so neither we nor our kids would get pushed around by others.
After Mia and I had walked for about half an hour and had gotten a bit tired, we plopped down on a bench at the edge of a small grove to rest.
As soon as we sat down, we heard someone talking; there was a guy and a girl. Their voices sounded super familiar.
"Stop bugging me. There's no way I can marry you now. For the sake of what we had, I won't do anything to you, but don't come looking for me again. From now on, let's act like we never knew each other. Even if we run into each other, there's no need to say hi."
"No, after all these years, how can you just let go? You can't be so heartless. Have you forgotten all the crap I went through for you?"
"You always remember what you did for me, but have you ever cared about what I did for you? You're the most heartless person I've ever met." The guy sounded really tired, his words flat and emotionless. "Just go, don't come back. We once loved each other, so I won't make things hard for you, but I don't want to see you again. Every time I see your face, it reminds me of how stupid I was."
"Don't go; please don't go. You said you would always love me, marry me, and give me a happy life. I was wrong; I'll listen to you from now on. Please don't go."
"I did say that, but now it turns out I was too confident in myself and our relationship. You made me look like a fool at your mercy. Even when you were constantly cheating on me, I stupidly made excuses for you. So I regret it. I want to take back the promises I made to you because you don't deserve them."
"Don't say that about me. Those were just flings. You are the only one I truly love. Don't give up on me; I can change."
"It's too late. Now, even hearing your voice makes me sick. I really thought about spending my life with you, and I really wanted to give you a home."
Then came the sound of the girl sobbing.
Mia and I sat there, stiff as boards; we even breathed lightly, afraid to make any noise that might interrupt their goodbye.
The voices stopped, followed by the sound of footsteps, one getting farther away, the other getting closer.
I pulled Mia aside, hoping to hide and avoid the awkward encounter with one of them.
Unfortunately, we picked the wrong path and ended up running into the girl.
Zoe, who wore a white cotton jacket, walked towards me with her head down, looking miserable. She was petite and delicate, but she had become very thin. Her eyes were bloodshot, as if she had been crying for a long time, but there were no tear stains on her face. Instead, there was a deep sense of weariness, making her look pitiful.
But I couldn't muster any sympathy for Zoe.
The cheerful Zoe with short hair was forever lost in the river of time; she would never return.
Now, Zoe had lost everything, which was her just deserts.
Zoe probably didn't expect to see me here. She paused for a moment, but then just kept walking. As the cold wind blew, she hunched her shoulders and tucked her hands into her sleeves. She walked past me, looking lonely and tragic.
Zoe didn't appreciate what she had when she had it, and now that she was abandoned, no one felt sorry for her.
I didn't say anything, and neither did Zoe. It was like we were two strangers passing by.
"She got what she deserved. Such a miserable end is her retribution," Mia said, always quick to judge and never one to tolerate someone like Zoe.
I said, "Actually, John is a decent guy. If Zoe had been faithful to him, she might have had a good life."
Mia said, "Zoe loves money too much. She was with John while actively looking for other men. Zoe probably doesn't even know who the father of her child is. It was only a matter of time before John dumped her."
Not long ago, I heard that Zoe's miscarriage had been discovered by the school, leading to a detailed investigation. They might have found something disgraceful; Zoe was given a major demerit. It seemed the school had planned to expel her, but Zoe's mom came to the school, knelt, and begged. After two special meetings, the expulsion was finally reduced to a major demerit.
A major demerit in college would be recorded in her file; it would severely affect Zoe's future job prospects.
Zoe's life was ultimately ruined by her own actions.
I wondered if Zoe now realized the mistakes she had made and if she had come to her senses.
Whether it was Daniel or John, if Zoe had been sincere, it wouldn't have been hard for her to have a good life. But she was too greedy.
When we got home, Yancy had already finished cleaning up and was standing at the kitchen counter. He carefully cut peeled apples into small pieces, and then stick toothpicks in them.
I ate a few pieces of apple and then started my daily basic combat training on the platform.
Yancy watched for a while and suddenly wanted Mia to train with me.
Mia was unwilling, curling up in the corner of the sofa and refusing to put on her shoes. Yancy patiently coaxed her, holding her slippers and trying to put them on her.
Mia said, "I don't have money, so I won't be robbed. I don't have a boyfriend, so I don't worry about being targeted by a rival. I don't need to train."
Yancy said, "Mia, be good. Let's train together. You don't need to be a master; just being able to escape in critical moments is enough. Be good; get up."
Mia said, "I refuse."
Yancy asked, "Then what will you do if you encounter danger?"
Mia said, "Didn't you say you would protect me? Why would I still encounter danger?"
Yancy said, "I did say that, but I can't be with you 24/7. There will be times when I can't be with you, and you need to learn to protect yourself."
Mia got agitated. "Are you breaking your promise? I knew you were unreliable."
Yancy said, "If you want me to be reliable, it's not hard. Just agree to let me stay by your side 24/7, then I can always protect you. That way, you'll be safe and won't have to train like Jane. Deal?"
Mia agreed, "Deal."
When Mia realized what she had just said, her hand froze mid-air with a piece of apple and her expression turned particularly awkward.
