Chapter 179 Seeing Through

I stumbled out of the building, totally out of it. The sun was blazing, lighting up everything and making it warm, but I couldn't feel a thing.

I had this gut feeling. Maybe since that car crash, my world would never see the sun again.

Man, sometimes I really hated these damn gut feelings. When I wanted them to be right, they weren't, and when I didn't, they hit the nail on the head.

I dragged myself back to school, back to my apartment, and just crashed on the bed, letting myself sink into endless darkness.

I lost track of time and space. If it weren't for Mia's call, I might've kept dreaming weird dreams until tomorrow morning, or even longer.

If I could, I'd rather sleep forever than face this tough choice.

"Jane, don't tell me you've been crying," Mia asked, all cautious.

A true friend can sense something's off even from miles away.

I sniffled hard.

In this moment of feeling alone and helpless, I really needed someone to talk to.

"Don't cry. Tell me what's going on. Even if I can't help, at least I can share some of the burden," Mia's voice was low, but she was trying hard to help, which warmed my heart a bit.

She and Benjamin had been on and off for years, draining a lot of her energy. The once cheerful and straightforward Mia had been worn out by this damn love. During several calls in the past, her despair and pain made me worry she wouldn't hold on.

Back at the Northern Institute of the Arts, Isabella and I often drank with her to drown her sorrows. Now that we were far apart, I couldn't be by her side, and she had to get through those tough days on her own.

Everyone had their own struggles in life.

The three of us used to swear to each other that no matter how the future changed or where we were, we would do our best to help each other in times of need.

She must have been feeling so suffocated that she couldn't bear it anymore and wanted to vent to me. But upon hearing my sobs, she forgot about herself and started comforting me instead.

That's what good friends are for—a lifetime of affection.

After I told her everything that had happened recently, she sighed deeply.

"Jane, you're the prettiest, most talented, and most pampered by your boyfriend among us. Isabella and I always thought you were the happiest of the three. Who would've thought you'd encounter something like this?"

"Mia, I don't know what decision is right, what will cause the least harm. I can't bear to leave Brad, but I can't ignore Daniel. It's really difficult."

"Exactly, if it were me, I wouldn't know what to do either. But Jane, I have to warn you, before you make a decision, make sure you won't regret it. Some things, once done, can't be undone. Some people, once missed, are gone forever. Don't be foolish! Conscience is a good thing, but it's not a necessity."

Conscience might not be a necessity, but it was a basic principle of being human.

I couldn't make a hasty decision about this. I needed to discuss it with Ronan and Helen. With their experience and wisdom, they could surely give me the most constructive advice.

"Enough about me, Mia. How are things with you and Benjamin lately?"

After a moment of silence, she forced a light laugh. "What can I say? Still the same."

"What do you mean by 'still the same'?"

"This weekend is Benjamin's grandpa Xavier Davis's seventy-third birthday. They're throwing a big bash."

"You going?"

Mia laughed, but it was that kind of laugh that’s more sad than happy. "He's got a date, and it ain't me. Jane, you know, at all those fancy events, his date is never me. By his side, I'm like a nobody, always in the shadows."

Her laughter faded, leaving only broken murmurs, each word soaked in tears.

Not wanting her to be sad, I switched gears. "The contract's almost up, right? What's the plan?"

After graduation, Mia had landed a sweet gig with good pay and prospects. But Benjamin, not wanting to be apart from her, asked her to ditch her job and join his family's company.

Mia, being a fool for love, probably loved Benjamin deeply. Despite her family's objections, she followed him to his city, joined his family's company, and became a nobody under Benjamin's childhood friend Sydney Powell.

Behind Sydney's innocent face was a malicious heart. She often made things tough for Mia, making her work late into the night. When Mia complained to Benjamin, he always said she lacked work experience and that more practice was good for her. After a few times, he got impatient, saying she couldn't handle hardship and questioning how she could stand by his side in the future.

I could imagine how rough Mia's days had been for the past six months.

At first, Benjamin often visited her, picking her up from work, and they lived in the big house he bought for her. Gradually, he used being busy as an excuse and rarely saw her, not sharing anything with her. Often, she only found out he had been on a business trip from Sydney's News Feed after he had already returned.

Isabella and I had advised her to think carefully about whether the love was still there and if it was worth humbling herself so much. She always said to wait a bit longer, maybe he was really busy, and he loved her. She said she would leave when he truly didn't love her anymore.

She wasn't lying to Isabella and me; she was lying to herself.

After what happened with Louis, I was even less optimistic about her and Benjamin's relationship. Even the deepest love couldn't withstand the severe division of social classes. Love obstructed by money and power rarely had a good outcome.

Mia hadn't fully realized this yet, and she was destined to get hurt.

"There's just less than two months left, but Jane, I'm so tired and disappointed. I'm afraid I won't make it to that day," Mia choked up.

Her feelings for Benjamin were so deep that when the day came for her to give up, it would be like ripping out a part of herself—pure agony.

"Mia, when you leave, if you haven't found a better place, come to me. I'll be with you."

"Promise?"

"I swear it to you."

I opened Facebook and saw that Brad had sent me a bunch of messages, all in text.

He was probably worried that sending voice messages would be overheard by Daniel and mess with his mood.

[Jane, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to.]

[Seeing you two hugging drove me crazy. I didn't mean to hurt you, I'm sorry.]

[Please reply, baby, I'm worried about you.]

[Does your shoulder hurt? I can't leave right now. Find someone to go to the hospital with you and let me know the results.]

[Jane, don't ignore me.]
