Chapter 340 Promise

I gotta admit, Brad was a total looker and seriously tempting.

Jenny was all over Brad, like she couldn't see anyone else in the room.

But her attitude just ticked me off more. No matter how smitten she was, Jenny couldn't have missed what Brad was saying.

In just a few minutes, Jenny's face was like a rollercoaster, her emotions all over the place.

Soon enough, she pulled herself together, back to her delicate act, tears and all. She looked at Brad like a kicked puppy, covering her face and sobbing. "Brad, I just wanted to celebrate your birthday. How could you let these people treat me like this? You've let me down so much. I'm really hurt."

I thought, 'Okay, feeling hurt is one thing, but disappointed? Really? And do you really need Brad to save you from bullies? What's your deal with Brad anyway? The way you talk, it's like there's something more going on between you two.'

Brad looked shocked, and the disgust in his eyes grew.

I turned away to hide my grin; he probably didn't expect Jenny to be this gross!

Brad, looking confused, said, "Wait, Jenny, have I ever not let you down?"

I couldn't help but laugh out loud. Jenny's face went white as a sheet.

With that one line, Jenny's whole act crumbled, and she lost it, yelling, "Brad, what did I do wrong for you to treat me like this?"

Brad's face darkened. "Jenny, are you really here to celebrate my birthday?"

Jenny paused, then her eyes lit up as she wheeled herself closer to Brad. "Of course, Brad. I love you so much. How could I not come to your birthday? How could I not come? I just didn't expect..."

The crowd went quiet, grabbing snacks and settling in to watch Jenny's drama unfold.

If I wasn't part of this mess, I'd probably grab some popcorn and watch too. A girl confessing her love to a guy with a girlfriend? That's some juicy stuff.

Jenny didn't finish her sentence. She tried to keep going, but Brad raised a hand to stop her. He said, "I don't know if you have memory issues or if you're just lying to yourself. I've told you many times, but you always forget. So, today, I'll say it again in front of my students and your crew. I have a girlfriend, and I love her very much. I'm only marrying her."

Brad continued, "No matter what you do, I will never fall for you. In this lifetime, there will be nothing between us beyond being schoolmates. To make sure you don't forget, let my students and your people remind you. If you get confused again, they can set you straight. If you came to celebrate my birthday, thanks. But if you have any other ideas, you need to leave and stay away from me. Remember, the person I love is Jane, and I will love her forever."

"Brad, is it wrong for me to love you? I just fell for you. But you're so cruel to someone who likes you. You're heartless." Jenny didn't know if she was really heartbroken or just couldn't handle the crowd's whispers; she started sobbing with her head down.

Brad's face didn't soften one bit. After a moment, he said firmly, "A wrong kind of love can mess things up big time, so just take it back. I can't handle it, and I don't need it."

Basically, he was telling Jenny she was wasting her time; he'd never love her.

Jenny probably didn't see that coming. Her face went ghostly pale, and for once, her usually fake eyes were filled with real sadness and disappointment. Tears streamed down her cheeks.

After saying his piece, Brad turned to head back to his seat.

Jenny called out, "Brad, I saved your life. How do you plan to repay me?"

That hit me like a ton of bricks, a dull, painful thud in my chest.

Brad froze, his tall frame going rigid.

I clutched my aching heart, staying quiet.

Daniel and Adam looked at me with concern, their eyes full of sympathy.

I smiled at them, trusting Brad wouldn't let me down.

Brad slowly turned around, each second feeling like torture for Jenny.

Facing her, he took a deep breath, squeezed my hand tightly, and said, "I haven't forgotten you saved my life. As long as it doesn't break any rules, I'm willing to repay you in any way you need, except for love."

Silence hung in the air.

Jenny, in her panic, had pushed things too far and was now regretting it. But it was too late.

She bit her lip hard, trying to hold back her tears and keep her dignity.

This time, I thought her tears were real.

After what felt like forever, Jenny finally lifted her head like a proud peacock, her eyes still wet but with a smile on her face. The bright red at the corners of her mouth was a bit jarring. "I want you to do something for me."

Brad said, "Okay, as long as it doesn't break what I said, I promise."

Brad always kept his word.

With Brad's promise, Jenny turned and left.

It seemed resolved, but it also felt like it was just beginning.

I watched as Jenny was wheeled away by her crew, got into a fancy car, and disappeared, feeling a deep unease.

I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but after all the drama Jenny caused, her sudden decision to back off made me sure that whatever she asked Brad to do in the future wouldn't be simple.

Jenny's arrival felt like a small hiccup at the party. After she left, everyone just moved on and started partying again.

We partied hard until evening, and only then did everyone reluctantly head out.

Aside from Jenny's unexpected drama, it was the best birthday party ever.

That night, Brad took a shower and lay quietly on the bed. When I finished my shower and climbed in, he held me close. Unlike usual, he didn't kiss, hug, or caress me but quietly patted my back, lulling me to sleep.
