Chapter 467 Reason

Brad's breath was hot and heavy, hovering just inches from my lips, like he was trying to pull my soul out. "Don't worry about it; just focus," he said.

But the phone wouldn't stop ringing, one call ending and another starting right away.

The ringtone was driving me nuts. I wasn't in the mood for anything intimate; all I wanted was to chuck the phone and get some peace and quiet.

Brad looked pissed as he grabbed the phone, ready to toss it. But before he could, I snatched it from him without even checking the caller ID and answered. I bought that phone with my own money, and if he threw it, I'd have to buy a new one. Better to save my cash; fixing that road was gonna cost a fortune.

"Hello, who is this?" I said.

There was silence on the other end, just faint breathing. I glanced at the screen instinctively.

"Please let Brad answer the phone." Jenny's voice, usually so arrogant, was now hoarse and desperate, like she'd been crying for days. She didn't sound like she was in control anymore.

Jenny's usual bossiness was gone, replaced by sadness and a raspy voice. She deserved to feel this way; it wouldn't hurt if she felt even worse. She had it coming.

Jenny tried to mess with us, but it backfired.

"Go ahead, he can hear you," I said, looking at Brad. He pouted, clearly annoyed with me for butting in.

Brad needed to set things straight with Jenny to keep her from coming back.

When she realized Brad was listening, Jenny's voice softened, sounding hurt. She turned her questions into complaints, saying, "Brad, after all these years, how could you be so cruel to push me to this point?"

On the other end, there was soft, pitiful sobbing, like she was genuinely hurt.

But Brad just laughed coldly and said, "Ms. Taylor, watch your words. Such ambiguity won't sit well with my girlfriend. We were just schoolmates with no real feelings for each other. I don't want your misleading statements to create any misunderstandings and upset her."

"Brad, do you really have to be so ruthless? Haven't you already ruined my life? Do you have to take down the Taylor family too? Please, just stop. If you can clarify online that those video files are fake, I'll give you twenty million dollars. Twenty million! How long would it take you to make that with your paintings? Think about it seriously. I did all this because I love you so much, with no other intentions. How can you be so cruel to me? Someone who's deeply in love deserves a little forgiveness for mistakes, don't you think, Brad?" Jenny started crying, playing the victim.

But wasn't all of this her fault? If she had just taken the time to heal peacefully, we would have genuinely taken care of her for life, doing everything we could and treating her like family.

In the end, it was all on her. She had no right to complain.

I really wanted to get inside Jenny's head and see how she had the nerve to ask us to deny the existence of the video files at this point. Was she really willing to sell her soul for twenty million dollars?Brad's project was worth twenty million, with a two-year deadline. Making that kind of money wasn't as easy for him as it was for Jenny to throw around like pocket change. But we earned our money through our own skills, and every penny was made with a clear conscience.

It wasn't about how fast we made money; it was about staying true to our values.

Besides, we didn't need much. Three meals a day, a roof over our heads, and clothes to wear were more than enough.

Even with everything out in the open, Jenny still tried to manipulate Brad with the idea of love. One phone call showed just how selfish and shameless she really was.

Maybe her feelings for Brad were never genuine love; she probably saw him as a tool to boost her own status.

Not to mention, twenty million dollars—even two hundred million—wouldn't outweigh Brad's reputation and future. It was crazy to think Brad would sell his soul for money. How could she even think that?

Jenny was used to valuing everything in terms of money, completely missing the countless priceless things in life, thinking money was all-powerful.

Her actions led to this mess, yet she tried to blame Brad, acting like she was the victim.

I couldn't believe the nerve she had to say such things. Even now, she had no awareness of her wrongdoings, hadn't offered a single apology, and still expected us to lie for her to save face.

I snapped, "Absolutely not! Jenny, you made the mistake, and you must bear the consequences. If it weren't for your cruelty and greed, you wouldn't be in this situation. So, I hope you can face your mistakes and sincerely repent, instead of shirking responsibility. Also, if your way of loving my boyfriend is what you've done, then your love is truly terrifying. By the way, to prevent you from playing any tricks, I've recorded everything you just said."

"Jane, shut up, you insidious woman." Jenny instantly became hysterical. Even through the phone, I could almost imagine how terrifying she looked at that moment. Her emotions were so intense, clearly triggered by the recording. "What does it matter to you if I talk to Brad? If it weren't for you, this bitch, always interfering, how could Brad not see me? You bitch, go to hell!"

Jenny's shouting was sharp and piercing, and I had to hold the phone away.

Jenny was always targeting me. I just didn't understand what I had done to make her hate me so much. It had always been her who was hostile toward me, always her who knew that Brad and I were in a relationship yet still wanted to be his mistress. How could she act like I had stolen her boyfriend?

In her twisted mind, there probably wasn't any concept of "reason."

At that moment, I was sure Jenny was truly foolish. She had cursed me in front of Brad, not even considering the consequences.

Hearing Jenny curse me, Brad shot her a frigid glance. He touched my earlobe and said coldly, "Jenny, you concocted a story about needing help to manipulate me into taking care of you. Then, you spread false information online that seriously harmed both Jane's and my reputation. Now you're on the phone using insults to slander Jane. I will hold you legally accountable for this. Every word you say will be the very thing that brings you down."
