Chapter 410 Hidden Truths

But Mia's behavior was a dead giveaway that there was something going on between her and Yancy that I was totally clueless about.

I figured getting answers out of Mia was a long shot, so I needed to crack this mystery with Yancy.

Judging by how Mia was keeping her distance, Yancy's confession probably didn't go as planned. Still, Yancy wasn't giving up and kept looking out for Mia.

Dinner without booze flew by, and in just twenty minutes, we were done.

I offered to do the dishes, and Mia jumped in to help.

"Jane, check the school forum, you're famous again," Yancy yelled, making me almost drop the dish I was scrubbing.

Mia was quicker than me. Before I could even react, she had already snatched my phone from the counter, unlocked it, and logged into the school forum.

[Art Department Hunk and Painting Department Beauty Gaze Lovingly—Is It Love?]

[Look at his tender eyes, look at her sweet smile, such a perfect match!]

Seriously, the students at National Capital University must not have enough homework if they have time for this.

There was no such thing as a loving gaze. Since the day I met Elliot, his eyes had been as clear as water, never showing any sign of liking me.

Besides, I looked at Elliot with eager anticipation, hoping he'd join my team. He looked at me just to appreciate my performance from a distance.

None of this had anything to do with feelings.

I really had no thoughts about Elliot. I could say, even if it meant getting a beating, that I didn't see Elliot as a guy but as a senior with amazing academic achievements, someone I could work with in academia, and that was it.

Plus, I had said this a million times. Ever since Brad came into my life, no other guy in the world could catch my interest.

This determination wasn't something Elliot could easily shake.

Also, didn't those students know that I was actually the girlfriend of the Brad they admired? Brad was just away on a business trip; he'd be back. Weren't they worried that Brad would come back and give them a hard time for their reckless comments online?

It hadn't been long since Adam and I were on the forum, and these students had already forgotten Adam's explanation?

Even though the buzz around these posts wouldn't last more than a couple of days and didn't need much attention, it still made me feel bad that Elliot became a celebrity at school because of me.

I figured I should apologize to Elliot since we'd be working together for a while.

I grabbed my phone back and sent an apology message to Elliot: [Sorry, Elliot, it's my fault for dragging you into this.]

Mia, who knew almost everything about my social life, saw me messaging someone she didn't know and got all curious. "A guy? Who is it? Spill!"

I was taken aback for a second and glanced at my phone, feeling a bit annoyed. Mia's question sounded more like a jealous boyfriend than a best friend.

"None of your business, just take care of Yancy," I said, pushing her hand into the sink, planning to slip past her and head to my room, leaving her to finish the dishes.

"No way," Mia blocked me skillfully, "I have to keep an eye on you for Brad."

I was fuming.

Just as I was about to say something, my phone pinged with a Facebook notification. Mia quickly snatched it again and saw Elliot's reply.

Elliot: [It's okay, let them say whatever they want. Don't worry about it. Our relationship can't be easily changed by a few words.]

Great, now it was even harder to explain.

Mia said, "Jane, be straight with me. What's up with this guy who talks so ambiguously? Don't think you can do whatever you want just because Brad isn't around. I'm telling you, besides being your best friend, I'm also Brad's fan. I won't cover for your mistakes."

"I didn't..." I tried to explain.

"Enough, save the excuses. You know what's going on. Just this once, I'll clear things up for you, but no more in the future."

With that, she ran back to her room, locking me out, and no matter how much I knocked, she wouldn't open the door.

When I finally found the key to open the door, she opened it herself, smugly handing my phone back to me.

Mia had posted an explanation on the school forum on my behalf two minutes earlier, making it too late for me to retract it.

Jane: [Clarification: I have a boyfriend, and the senior is infatuated with someone else. We are just classmates. If anyone causes me trouble because of this, I will pursue it to the end.]

I looked at the explanation, which was almost identical to Adam's, and felt that the world was truly surreal.

These two unrelated people, Mia and Adam, had such similar tones and content in their clarifications.

Immediately, those who had been talking about Elliot and me gazing lovingly at each other started discussing who Elliot actually liked.
