Chapter 474 Proposing Marriage
Dinner turned into a full-on confession fest, and soon enough, everyone was feeling pretty down. Emma and Helen were both in tears.
I was feeling pretty uneasy myself.
Just as I was trying to figure out how to lift the mood, Rachel jumped in, rolling up her sleeves like she was ready to get to work.
"Hugh, didn't you say you had two things to talk about? You've apologized, and Ronan and Helen are cool with it. So, what's the second thing? I hope it's about giving out gifts—the more, the better," Rachel said, clapping her hands together with a hopeful look that made Daniel chuckle.
Emma saw what Rachel was doing and played along. She wiped her tears and gave Rachel a playful slap. "You little rascal, always thinking about gifts. But yeah, this second thing is a big deal, a happy one. Hugh, go ahead and spill the beans; everyone's waiting."
What could it be? I glanced at Helen, who shook her head. Then I looked at Ronan, who did the same. Brad squeezed my fingers, signaling he was just as clueless.
Hugh cleared his throat. "We're all family here, so I'll get straight to it. Brad and Jane have been dating for a while now, and seeing how well they get along makes me really happy. Jane is the best girl in the world, and Emma and I are worried someone else might snatch her up. So, we want to make it official. The main reason we're here today is to propose that Jane and Brad get married. Brad's thirty, and Jane isn't getting any younger either. Let's set their wedding date for May 1st next year. I can't wait to have a grandchild."
Marriage proposal?
That was a huge leap.
And proposing that Brad and I get married without even giving us a heads-up?
At the very least, they could've mentioned it to my parents first.
But no, they just dropped it on us out of nowhere.
Were they trying to pressure us into getting married right then and there, whether I agreed or not?
I was so shocked I nearly passed out.
Brad was just as stunned. He choked on a piece of red pepper he had just bitten into, coughing violently until his face turned bright red.
It all happened so fast, and since we weren't prepared, it's no wonder we lost our cool.
My parents were just as bewildered.
Hugh and Emma suddenly proposing that Brad and I get married without any warning made me feel trapped.Rachel clapped her hands in delight, looking like she was the one getting married. "Jane, hurry up and say yes, so Daniel and I can have a sister-in-law!" she exclaimed.
This was all happening way too fast.
As soon as Rachel finished talking, Daniel started coughing.
He covered his mouth, turning his face to the side as he coughed violently, looking super uncomfortable.
Emma scolded, "Daniel, how can you start coughing at such a crucial moment? Go cough somewhere else and don't delay the important stuff. Helen, we're serious about this. If you have any complaints, just let us know, as long as it doesn't mess with their marriage."
"Wait a minute, I haven't even agreed yet. Can I catch my breath first?"
"Emma, I know they have a good relationship, but isn't it a bit rushed to talk about marriage all of a sudden? Besides, Jane still has a year left in her grad program, and this is a critical time for her. She should be focusing on her studies," Ronan said, always the teacher, thinking education was the most important thing.
Of course, the main reason was that Ronan couldn't bear to part with me.
Hugh chimed in, "We're just suggesting they get engaged so they know they have each other. The details of the engagement and wedding can be worked out later, whenever it suits them, and we're here to support that. Emma, bring out the gifts we prepared, quickly."
Gifts? I instinctively looked at Brad, who was sitting upright. If it weren't for the blush on his ears and his tight grip on my hand, I would have thought his composure was genuine.
Even someone as composed as Brad felt shy when his parents brought up the idea of marriage for him.
Over the years, I had seen many sides of Brad, but that shyness was a first for me.
"I didn't know about the gifts or anything else today. I'm just as surprised as you are," Brad suddenly bent down and whispered in my ear. "But I fully support it."
Brad's warm breath tickled my ear and cheek, making me pull back. I quickly wiped my face and nudged Brad's head back to where it was. "The elders are here. Why are you so close? Speak properly."
Brad returned to his position without protest, just smiling.
Rachel chimed in again, "Everyone, look at them! Just see how much Brad and Jane love each other. I'm so jealous of their sweetness!"
At this moment, Emma had already brought over the gifts.
