Chapter 303: Injured Again

She was lying there, looking all weak and stuff, like she’d just had a good cry, her eyes still red and puffy.

The shorter dude was standing to the left of the bed, hands behind his back, looking all worried.

An old lady was massaging Jenny's legs and wiping away tears every now and then. Wasn't Jenny's family all overseas? Did they rush back when they heard she got hurt?

I glanced at Brad, totally confused. This old lady was crying her eyes out; could she be Jenny's mom? It wasn’t even a serious injury. No one with a normal relationship would be this torn up.

Brad shook his head slightly and mouthed to me that the woman was a caregiver.

This was kinda weird.

Wasn't the caregiver just hired by Brad? No way she got this attached to Jenny in just a few days.

From what I knew, caregivers do their job, get paid, and keep it professional. They don’t usually get all emotional.

Was I wrong? Or were caregivers these days so dedicated they offer emotional support too?

Brad really hit the jackpot with this caregiver for Jenny.

The second Jenny saw Brad, her tear-filled eyes lit up. She wanted to say something but ended up with a shy smile.

But when she saw me, her smile vanished.

Guess tonight, like always, I was just extra baggage for Jenny.

No, scratch that. Anytime, anywhere, I was always unnecessary for her.

"Brad, why are you here so late? It's my fault; I got hurt doing rehab and made you worry. I'm fine, really. It doesn’t hurt much, just a small cut, and it'll heal up soon. Don’t worry." Even though she was bummed, she still managed to greet Brad.

Jenny was all about Brad, not even a mention of me. How much did she dislike me?

She was acting all considerate and strong. Even though her eyes were full of tears, she bit her lip to keep them from falling, her eyes glued to Brad’s face.

If it wasn’t for the nurse spilling the beans about her real condition, I might’ve believed her.

Was it really cool to act like this in front of a guy who had a girlfriend?

Brad didn’t want to argue with Jenny. He gave me a subtle squeeze on the waist, and I got the hint to step in.

"Jenny, don’t say that. You’re pushing yourself in rehab for everyone’s sake, to get better soon so everyone can be happy, and you can suffer less. Brad and I are happy for you, how could we blame you?"

Jenny finally looked at me, like she just noticed I was there, and said, "Jane, you’re here too. Come and sit."

Sit? I was here to check on an injured person, not to sit. Should I sit next to you so you can flirt with my boyfriend?

"Jenny." I walked over, stood by her bed, and bent down. I checked out the wound on her forehead and felt kinda speechless.

Jenny must’ve known the wound wasn’t much to show, so she raised her hand to cover her forehead, but I gently brushed her hand away.

The wound was barely an inch long, just a bit red, like a scratch from a fingernail, not even an open cut.

The thing was, you had to look real close to even see it.

No wonder she was in such a rush to call us over in the middle of the night; if we’d come any later, the cut might've healed itself.

Brad noticed too and got super pissed.

Getting played with all these different excuses, who wouldn’t be mad?

"Jenny’s been through a lot, rehab is painful every day. She doesn’t want us to worry, so she never says anything. It breaks my heart to see her like this. If it weren’t for tonight’s sudden and dangerous incident, and no man around, she wouldn’t have troubled you to come."

I glanced at the shorter guy, who was looking down, then at the taller guy whose face was twitching. I couldn’t help but be amazed at the caregiver’s ability to lie.

She said there was no man around in front of two men, which was practically an insult!

"You’re too kind. Jenny got hurt because of me; it’s only right to take care of her. I just spoke with the hospital; normally, the rehab room should be locked. However, Jenny went in, so the hospital clearly has some responsibility for poor management.

I’ll address this directly with the hospital tomorrow. We trusted them with Jenny’s care, and aside from the rehab, she suffered unexpected harm. They must give us an explanation."

The caregiver sensed Brad’s anger and wisely chose to zip it, leaving the conversation to Jenny.

The two sidekicks acted like they hadn’t heard a thing, pretending to be deaf and mute the whole time.

I had to reassess their relationship once again.

It was pretty interesting, wasn’t it?

While Brad was talking, I kept my eyes on Jenny, wanting to see her reaction.

As expected, she got uneasy.

Hearing Brad’s words, Jenny clearly showed panic. She instinctively looked up at the tall guy, who awkwardly cleared his throat. Jenny hesitated for a moment, quickly suppressed her expression, and then regained her composure.

Jenny had some serious psychological resilience and excellent control over her expressions.

But based on their reactions, who would believe there was nothing wrong?

And that caregiver, where did Brad hire her from? Did she know what she was supposed to do? If it was just for the job, she wouldn’t go this far.

Their relationships were quite intriguing.

"Forget it, Brad. It was my carelessness. The nurses have a tough job, and if they get scolded because of me, I’ll feel guilty." Jenny touched the wound on her head and gave the nurse a meaningful glance. "It’s not a serious injury anyway, I won’t pursue it."

But I could tell that glance was clearly a silent threat to the nurse.

Why threaten the nurse? To help her cover up?

Jenny acted like she was considering the nurse, but she was actually trying to silence her. If the nurse fell for her act, Jenny would have achieved her goal.
