Chapter 232 Someone's in Trouble
Seeing Xena go off the rails, Margaret was about to blow a gasket.
After a bunch of tests, the doctor just shook his head. Margaret got out of bed, ready to smack Xena, but Caleb stepped in. "Aunt Margaret, chill out. Your health comes first. Xena's not worth it."
Margaret was fuming, frustrated she couldn't lay a hand on Xena. "Xena's still got forty million bucks from the company, which belongs to Mr. Raymond Carnegie, my granddaughter's. Does she think she can just keep that money now that she's lost it? No way."
Margaret kept hurling insults at Xena, trying to get a rise out of her. If she was faking it, the doctor couldn't tell. Maybe pushing her buttons would do the trick.
Margaret knew Xena well, having watched her grow up. Xena had always been pampered as the Sackler family heir. She couldn't possibly take this kind of verbal beating unless she was genuinely nuts.
Margaret cursed for ages, but Xena didn't budge. Eventually, Margaret had to throw in the towel. She was exhausted, her health couldn't take it anymore. She collapsed onto the hospital bed, staring at the ceiling, tears streaming down her face.
"Will Paige ever forgive me?" Margaret muttered to herself.
Meanwhile, Paige was also pretty shaken up, but she bounced back quicker than Margaret. After clearing her head, cutting off all communication, and getting a good night's sleep with Raymond, Paige woke up feeling much better.
Raymond was worried about Paige, but she seemed to be back to her old self. She ate like normal, with a good appetite. After eating, she even asked Pearl about work, handling some urgent stuff and delegating the rest.
Seeing Paige recover so fast, Raymond quietly asked, "Honey, you okay?"
Paige replied, "I'm fine. You think I'd get stuck in this mess? Don't worry. I should thank Mrs. Sackler for toughening me up."
Thinking about her past, Paige smirked. "If it weren't for her, I might not be this resilient. And I'm not that little girl longing to go home anymore. I've grown up, and with mom by my side now, I won't let myself get stuck in this situation. Alright, let's find something else to do, or I'll die of boredom."
Even though Paige said this, she still had some lingering emotions. She needed something to distract herself. Raymond got it. He immediately suggested, "That brother and sister have been locked up for days. Want to interrogate them yourself?"
Raymond's suggestion hit the spot for Paige. Nothing could have been more satisfying than her being able to blow off some steam while in a bad mood.
Paige nodded. "Yeah, it's about time to meet those two."
Today, Paige didn't drive. She sat in the passenger seat while Raymond, for a change, took the wheel and drove her out. With Paige gone, Pearl and Amelia stayed back at home.
Pearl asked, "Is this a date?"
Amelia was puzzled too. "Did she really calm down that fast?"
Pearl shook her head. "Not necessarily. I think Xanthe's like a dormant volcano right now. I wouldn't want to be the one to set her off." Pearl had thoroughly read Xanthe's file before she got out of prison to better serve her.
Amelia slowly turned to Pearl. "So you're saying Ms. Ellison looks calm but is actually a ticking time bomb?"
Pearl nodded. "Pretty much, but I don't know who's gonna be the unlucky one." But she was sure someone was in for it. That unlucky person soon met Paige in the dark basement.
Paige was in a particularly foul mood today. Even though Raymond had captured them, Paige took the lead.
After that so-called wedding, Oliver and Lily had been locked up here by Raymond. Charles made sure they got one meal and some water every day, just enough to keep them alive.
This place wasn't a prison, but it might as well have been. The two were locked in separate iron cages, like animals. With iron chains around their wrists and ankles, escape was impossible.
Paige walked step by step towards Lily. Once neatly dressed and looking like a cultured heir, Lily now looked disheveled and defeated in the basement cage. She leaned against the cage, looking ragged and dozing off. Hearing footsteps, she snapped to attention.
As Paige got closer, she covered her nose. A foul stench wafted from Lily, making Paige want to gag. Lily seemed to have been stuck with her own filth for days, and Paige couldn't stand the smell.
With a nod from Raymond, someone quickly cleaned up the mess and sprayed Paige's preferred air freshener. The smell was still bad, but much more bearable.
Lily leaned there, seemingly too weak to stand. But her eyes were locked on Paige and Raymond. "You finally showed up. How long are you gonna keep us here? Rather than torturing us like this, you might as well just kill us directly!"
