Chapter 257 I'll Wait for You
Paige's eyes welled up with tears as she let out a bitter laugh. "You didn't mean to hurt her, but she's dead anyway. What if you had meant to? Why are you so heartless? If you want to blame someone, blame me. Why did you do this to her?"
Paige bit her lip, trying hard to hold back her tears. Francesca, seeing Paige so torn up, couldn't help but feel affected too.
But Francesca knew she had to clear things up now, or it would only get messier later. "I'm really sorry. Last night, I had my guys knock out your bodyguard, but they told me you were already back at the hospital, so we left in a hurry.''
''I left with my people, and you went upstairs. Luna was poisoned in those ten minutes. I swear on my life, I only talked to her. She didn't push me away. She mostly listened, and she was fine when I left. I swear on my life and Louis's life, I didn't poison her." Francesca couldn't believe that in the ten minutes between her leaving and Paige arriving, Luna got poisoned.
Now, she had no way to prove she was innocent. She had messed with the surveillance cameras, which was undeniable. If she wasn't up to something shady, why mess with the cameras? Even Francesca couldn't come up with a good reason for herself. The best reason was the truth. But the truth was something Francesca couldn't reveal.
Paige sneered, "How can you guarantee that? If the truth is harsh, are you prepared to join Luna in death?"
Paige's words seemed to scare Louis. He quickly stepped forward. "Paige, my mom had no reason to kill Ms. Parker. I know you're really sad and upset right now, but please be rational and calm."
Paige suddenly shouted, "I can't be calm. Why don't you try it? Let your mom lie in that coffin and see if you can stay calm!"
Louis fell silent. After all, it was Luna who had died. To him, Luna was an outsider. It might really be impossible for Paige to stay calm and rational. If it were him, he might find it hard too.
But Louis had to say it. "Paige, even if you can't be rational, think about it. If it wasn't my mom, who else could have gone to the ward in the time between her leaving and you returning and poisoned your mom?''
''The truth needs to be found. My mom was wrong. Even if she wanted to see your mom, she should have done it openly. But now that it's happened, the truth is important. If you ignore the truth and let the real culprit go free, your mom won't rest in peace."
Louis's words made sense. Raymond, standing next to Paige, chimed in after Louis finished. "Louis is right," Raymond said to Paige. "Francesca might not have poisoned her. And her being here today shows she's not running away out of fear. We should dig deeper. Francesca was wrong, but if she didn't poison her, we can't let the real culprit get away."
Raymond's words seemed to help Paige regain a bit of rationality. She took a deep breath and, with tearful eyes, looked at Raymond. "I said I would avenge my mom."
Raymond nodded. "And I promised to stand by your side. If it wasn't Francesca, we need to find who did it."
Raymond's words calmed Paige down a bit. "You should leave. I don't want to see you here," Paige said, her emotions still raw. The last person she wanted to see was Francesca.
But Francesca had come not just to explain but also to pay her respects to Luna. She felt she needed to see Luna one last time. "I want to say goodbye to Luna. Last night, we had a good talk. Her death is somewhat related to me. Can you give me a chance to say sorry?"
Paige was about to refuse when Louis stepped forward. "I also want to pay my respects to her."
Raymond, holding Paige's waist, gently supported her. "Let them say their final goodbyes to Luna. It's also a way to give Luna some closure."
Paige sighed. "Fine, go ahead. Remember this moment. If I find out you are the real culprit, I will personally..."
Paige didn't finish her sentence as Raymond gently squeezed her hand. "Let's not talk about this at your mom's farewell ceremony." Paige closed her eyes and turned her head away.
Francesca, with Louis, walked into the funeral home and approached Luna, who lay quietly in the coffin, surrounded by flowers. Even though the person who prepared her body did a good job, making her look lifelike, it couldn't hide the pallor of death.
Francesca felt a bit shocked. Just last night, Luna was alive, and now she lay motionless in the coffin, devoid of any life. Even though Francesca knew Luna's health was poor, seeing her lifeless still pained her.
After bowing to Luna, Francesca pulled Louis forward. She said nothing, unable to express the pain in her heart to anyone. And now, the misunderstanding couldn't be cleared up. After paying their respects, Francesca and Louis walked out.
Francesca approached Paige again and said, "I'll be waiting. If needed, I'll cooperate with you to find the real culprit."
