Chapter 243 The Culprit Must Not Be Let Off Easily

Margaret sighed. "I've got nothing left. My husband and son are gone. I thought at least I'd have my granddaughter, poured everything into raising her. All these years, I never got why, no matter how hard I tried to teach her, she couldn't even pick up a third of it.''

''I had to clean up her messes so many times. Now I see she was never really part of the Sackler family. I wasted half my life on her, and it led me to do such awful things to my own granddaughter. Paige, I know I was wrong. From now on, whatever you want, it's yours. I won't interfere anymore; I just want your forgiveness."

Seeing Margaret still didn't get it, Paige just stood up to leave. "Mrs. Sackler, don't you get it? There's no bond between us. You crying and begging for my forgiveness—how can I forgive the harm you've caused me? Mrs. Sackler, I'm not a saint; I can't forgive everything you've done.''

''The best thing for us is to not mention any relationship between me and the Sackler family from now on. You are the head of the Sackler family, and I'm Xanthe. Peaceful coexistence is the best outcome for us. Do you understand?"

Margaret pleaded, "Paige, the Sackler family can't just end without an heir. The Sackler Group has been passed down for generations; it can't end with me. Paige, even if you hate me and never plan to forgive me, can I still ask you to take over the Sackler Group?"

Paige laughed coldly and shook her head. "I have no interest in the Sackler family's business or the Sackler Group. The Universe Group alone is enough to keep me busy."

Margaret said, "But Paige, you're not part of the Ellison family. Although I haven't figured out why you became Xanthe after getting out of prison, I know that the Universe Group also has no heir. Your sudden appearance brings unknown risks. The Sackler Group may not be as powerful or wealthy as the Universe Group, but you can maintain this wealth and live a life without worries with your intelligence, as will your future children."

Margaret's words were sincere. She feared Paige might have used improper means to get to her current position, given that her background had nothing to do with the Ellison family.

Paige laughed as she listened. It turned out that Margaret did have moments of consideration for her. "Since you have already investigated, you should know that I'm even less likely to be interested in the Sackler Group. By the way, I'm not interested in the century-old furniture company under the Sackler Group either. The main reason I targeted it was because you valued it, nothing more.''

''If you have no other questions, I'll be leaving now. I hope you realize that this will be our final conversation." After saying this, Paige no longer wanted to stay. Margaret watched Paige leave with tears streaming down her face, weakly calling out, "Paige, Paige."

Caleb supported Margaret, having listened to Paige's rejection from start to finish, unsure of what to say.

Margaret was a wreck. When Paige walked out, it felt like her heart and her whole life just emptied out. She'd lost her husband early on, running the Sackler Group solo and raising Noah.

After all that effort, Noah married Luna. Luna wasn't her top pick, but at least it kept the Sackler name in the family. But now, Margaret couldn't handle this blow.

She wanted Luna to have a boy but ended up with two girls. It didn't matter as long as they were Sacklers, and she did her best to raise them. But who knew she was raising a trafficker's daughter while Paige was sent to the countryside.

Now, Paige didn't acknowledge her, refusing to come back to the Sackler family. The real Xena had died years ago, replaced by an outsider for many years. Her life's work seemed to be crumbling. Margaret couldn't take it and fainted. Caleb quickly called for a doctor.

Paige, not far away, heard the calls for a doctor from Margaret's room. Instantly, chaos erupted in Margaret's room.

Paige turned back and saw the doctor rushing in. She waited a few minutes. Seeing the nurses coming and going with medication, she knew from the meds that Margaret's life wasn't in danger. She then turned and left.

She had no love for Margaret, but she didn't want her to die just like that. Margaret should live. Only those who were alive could reflect and reconsider what they had done. Death would be too easy for Margaret.

Paige went back to Luna's room. Luna was already asleep. Raymond was busy working in the lounge. Seeing Paige return, Raymond immediately put down his work. "Done talking over there?"

Paige nodded, feeling much lighter. "Yeah, it's done. She should get my point now. I don't think she'll be bugging me for forgiveness every day anymore."

Raymond nodded. "That's good."

"When I left her room, things didn't look good. Has Amelia been here today? Have her check on the situation later."

Raymond asked, "Afraid she'll blame you if something happens?"

Paige shook her head. "No, I'm afraid she'll find release. My mom can't even speak clearly now. People should pay for what they've done, right?"

Just as Paige finished speaking, there was a knock on the door, and then it opened with Pearl and Amelia peeking in.

"Xanthe, Mr. Raymond Carnegie, you're both here." Whether Paige instructed or not, Pearl had to come by every day to check on Luna's condition.

Amelia was the same. The hospital belonged to the Smith family, and she was even more concerned about Luna's condition. After all, since the Smith family had aligned themselves with Paige, they hadn't done anything significant for her yet. They had to be diligent with Luna in the hospital to show their sincerity.

Paige relayed her earlier instructions to Amelia, who nodded, made a call, and then reported back on Margaret's condition. "Mrs. Sackler fainted from emotional distress, but she's fine now. By the way, what do you plan to do with Xena?"

Paige hadn't had time to deal with her over the past few days. The culprit who harmed Luna couldn't be let off easily.
