Chapter 259 What If I Suddenly Die
The whole "there's always tomorrow" thing? Yeah, that was pretty much useless to Margaret. No matter how much time went by, Paige was never gonna forgive her. And now that Luna was gone, Paige had even less of a reason to let it go. She might resent her even more.
Margaret had tried talking to Paige, but Paige's stance was always clear. She was Xanthe Ellison and had nothing to do with the Sackler family. Margaret waved her hand. "I'm tired. As long as Paige is happy, I don't need anything else."
Francesca was lost in her own thoughts and didn't say much more to Margaret before getting out of the car.
After a few steps, Francesca turned back. Seeing the once-proud Margaret now looking so much older, Francesca couldn't help but say, "Mrs. Sackler, take care of yourself. If the company needs anything, you can come to me for help."
Margaret looked up at Francesca. Back when Xena and Louis were considering marriage, Francesca had never been so upfront about supporting the Sackler family's company. Today was kinda weird. She thought maybe Francesca saw her as old and pitiful. But it was a nice gesture. Margaret nodded and thanked her.
Francesca got back into her car where Louis was waiting, still looking at the funeral home. "What did you talk about for so long?" Louis asked, turning his gaze back to Francesca.
Francesca said, "We exchanged some info. I wondered if she found out anything while staying in that hospital, but turns out she didn't."
Louis said, "You must have heard about Xena."
Francesca nodded slightly. "Yeah, I've heard." Francesca didn't react much because she had already been shocked when she first heard about it. Now, it was old news.
Francesca had dealt with Xena before and didn't think much of her. But Xena was kinda attractive and simple-minded, which made Francesca think she would be easy to control.
It wouldn't have been a bad thing if Louis married her. The Sackler family's assets would be in Louis's hands, and Xena could never outsmart Francesca. Plus, the Sackler family still had some major projects, which Francesca liked.
Now, the marriage was off the table. After learning Xena's true identity, Francesca felt it made sense. Some things were innate; no matter the exposure, they couldn't be learned. Like Paige, even if she grew up in the countryside and was held back, she could still rise. The fake Xena couldn't.
"It's a good thing the marriage didn't happen back then." Besides the identity issue, Francesca was also worried about something else now, but she only thought about it briefly and didn't say it out loud.
Louis confessed, "I never liked her. Paige and I grew up together, even ended up in the same village when we were in trouble. If it weren't for protecting her, I wouldn't have teamed up with Xena."
Hearing Louis bring up those memories, Francesca suddenly got interested. "After you got home, you barely talked about those years in the village. Louis, can you tell me about it? And how was Paige during those years?"
Louis glanced at Francesca. "Mom, weren't you not interested in that stuff?" He remembered that after he was brought back from the village, Francesca clearly didn't care. He had tried talking about it, but she didn't seem to listen, always busy with company matters. He had mentioned Paige too, but Francesca didn't even remember her name.
So Louis knew she wasn't interested in village life and stopped bringing it up. For him, Paige was the only light in a world of darkness at that time.
Francesca said, "I just suddenly want to know how you got through those years in the village."
Louis shook his head. "It feels like a lifetime ago. I don't want to recall. Mom, let's just go home."
Francesca really wanted to hear about those years, but when Louis used to talk about it, she never paid attention. Now that he didn't want to talk, she couldn't force him.
After the car had driven quite a distance, Louis suddenly asked, "Mom, why do you suddenly want to know about my years in the village?"
Francesca was caught off guard. After a few seconds, she smiled. "Time flies so fast. In the blink of an eye, you're already an independent adult. Louis, you and Paige are not meant to be. The kidney donation made me realize you're at the age to get married and have kids. After Ms. Parker's matters are settled, I'll find some suitable girls for you to meet. How about it?"
Louis looked at her in surprise. "Mom, we haven't even cleared our names here, and you're talking about matchmaking?"
Francesca said, "Louis, listen to me. Get married and have kids early, even if you see it as a task. Life is unpredictable, and I don't want you to have any regrets."
Her sudden sad and regretful tone made Louis look at her a few more times. This wasn't like her usual self. "Mom, are you okay? Ms. Parker's situation doesn't involve you much, does it?"
For some reason, seeing Francesca like this made Louis worry. She quickly realized her state was off and adjusted. She smiled. "I said I wouldn't harm her. I was just thinking, she and I are about the same age. It must be very regretful she didn't get to see her daughter in a wedding dress or her grandchildren born.''''If one day, I encounter danger like her, my biggest regret would be not seeing you get married and have kids. Louis, I will grow old year by year, and maybe face unexpected events like Ms. Parker. I want to see you have a complete family. Just fulfill my wish."
Louis was even more confused by her words. "Mom, why are you talking about unexpected events? You're healthy and won't have any accidents. You can't force matters of the heart. I'm not planning to get married right now."
