Chapter 381 Shadow, Double
To be honest, Raymond has a knack for comforting Paige.
Even in such a situation, Paige's mood could be soothed by him.
At the breakfast table, everyone was waiting for Paige. And the double was summoned by Julian later.
The double entered through the back door of the Carnegie family mansion and went straight to Paige's study to wait.
When Paige entered, she saw an ordinary-looking woman holding a small briefcase.
After a few months, Paige saw her again. When she first entered, Paige saw the double's back.
It must be said that even Paige herself found it hard to distinguish this back view.
It was only when she turned around and nodded in greeting to Paige that it became clear her face was vastly different from Paige's.
Paige's face was stunningly beautiful, with well-defined features and striking eyes.
It was this highly recognizable face combined with her perfect figure that left a lasting impression on people.
Her beauty made it difficult to find a double, and the woman in front of her only had a similar body shape.
The double's face was extremely ordinary and would be hard to pick out in a crowd, with no memorable features and certainly not striking at first glance.
Perhaps it was this ordinariness that made her hard to remember, which was why she used to be an assassin!
Such characteristics were an advantage in her profession.
The double didn't say much. After nodding in greeting to Paige, she remained silent.
Paige remembered that the last time she saw her, Julian had introduced her, saying she had no name.
Assassins usually only have code names. After leaving that identity behind, it was understandable that she had no name.
Paige asked, "Do you have a name now?"
The woman didn't speak.
Julian, standing beside her, answered for her. "No, how about you give her one, Ms. Ellison?"
Paige said, "Me?"
Julian replied, "She was born for you. After Mr. Ellison saved her, her purpose in life has been to serve you, protect you, and be ready to..."
Julian didn't say the last part out loud.
The double was well aware of this. She should have died long ago, but Wesley had snatched her back from the hands of death.
So, she was prepared to die for Paige whenever needed.
Paige looked at the woman seriously and casually said, "Selene Ellison."
Julian was shocked. "Ellison?"
Paige said, "What's the issue with the surname? Since she's to be my shadow, my double, why can't she have the same surname?"
Julian nodded. That made sense.
When Paige said the name, Selene, who had been keeping her head down, slowly looked up at Paige.
Paige felt her gaze and turned to her. "If you don't like the name, we can change it."
The woman, who had not spoken until now, blurted out, "I like it."
Paige gave her a faint smile. "As long as you like it. What you brought is the 'miracle technology' Julian mentioned, right?"
The technology that could make Selene completely disguise herself as Paige.
Selene didn't say much, nodded, and placed the briefcase on Paige's desk. She then opened it, revealing a mask made with nanotechnology under the protective layer.
Paige asked, "Why isn't it a full mask?"
Selene kept her head down, and Julian explained. "That's mainly because, Ms. Ellison, your face is not easy to replicate into a full mask. It's too beautiful and delicate. Making a complete nanomask would take too long."
Paige understood. "So your technology isn't up to par yet?"
Julian said, "Ms. Ellison, if you're interested in the tech department, you're welcome to visit anytime."
Paige nodded. "Sure!"
This tech department was well-hidden, likely a direction the Universe Group planned to develop after integrating resources.
After all, ordinary industries weren't profitable enough.
With the rapid development of society, the most profitable industries, besides pharmaceuticals, were cutting-edge technology.
Paige had a firm grip on the pharmaceutical sector.
It made sense for the Universe Group to choose the path of cutting-edge technology!
Paige picked up the mask piece and asked Selene . "Can you demonstrate it for me?"
Selene nodded.
She really didn't talk much. If Paige hadn't heard her speak, she might have thought she was mute.
Selene activated the mask piece in front of Paige, then opened the mirror on the briefcase and applied the mask piece to her face.
The silver-white mask piece, once applied to the face, quickly turned into the color of normal skin.
Paige curiously asked, "Does this thing stay on just by sticking it?"
Julian explained from the side. "This is technology. After countless experiments, once applied, it adheres to the face with a barely noticeable microcurrent. You can think of it like static electricity, but the mask's adhesion is stronger. It won't fall off even with intense movement or fighting."
As Julian spoke, Selene applied the other mask pieces to her face.
Then, just before Selene's final step, she looked at Paige, as if to say "Watch me, don't blink, I'm about to transform."
Paige stared at her and nodded.
Selene cupped her face with her hands, closed her eyes slightly, and then, after her fingerprints matched the mask, it activated and adjusted to the optimal state. Selene then released her hands.
Paige watched without blinking as the face of an ordinary-looking woman transformed into her own face.
Even though she knew the mask's function, seeing a face identical to hers still surprised Paige.
She moved closer to examine if there were any differences.
Except for slight differences in the eyes and mouth, there were almost no distinguishable differences.
Paige asked, "Can I touch it?"
Selene nodded.
Paige reached out her hands, knowing she was touching a mask, but the texture felt no different from real skin.
Unfortunately, she didn't have the time to achieve anything in this field of technology research.
Paige said, "Can this mask be used by someone else?"
Selene shook her head.
Julian said with a pained expression. "Just these few pieces cost a fortune and had to be custom-made. Over the years, a dedicated team of researchers has been working on this, with research funding, materials, and so on costing astronomical amounts daily. Some things can't be mass-produced for a reason. This technology took five years of research and was barely usable by the time you were released."
Paige nodded. For a moment, she didn't quite understand why Mr. Ellison would spend so much to create something to protect her life when he had other people ready to replace her.
Did a replaceable pawn need such protection?
However, the thought quickly vanished from her mind.
Selene reached out and held Paige's hand.
Paige was surprised by this gesture.
Selene, who rarely spoke, adjusted Paige's fingers on the mask and said, "Record the fingerprint, and you can activate it."
Paige understood that the mask likely had a few fingerprint memory functions.
After recording the fingerprint, Selene moved Paige's fingers to use the fingerprint to deactivate the mask.
Then, Selene removed the mask and placed it back in the case. "I can act at any time."
Paige said, "No rush. Although we are the ones being threatened, it doesn't mean the other side can control us as they wish. As long as the hostage is safe, we need to temper Andrew's attitude first."
Giving in to every demand was not Paige's way of handling things!
Selene asked, "What is my main task?"
Paige said, "For the next couple of days, follow Pearl. She will teach you how to mimic my speech."
Selene nodded, "I've already learned."
Paige said, "Alright, it seems she is well-prepared."
She didn't need to worry about training her; this was a mature shadow, ready to be used at any time.
Paige added, "Then let's talk about the main task, kill Andrew!"
Julian was shocked by Paige's words.
Paige had no regard for Andrew's contributions to the Universe Group over the years.
She was decisive and ruthless, no wonder Wesley valued her most.
Selene nodded. After all, killing was within her professional scope.
Paige continued, "As for the hostage, try to save them if possible."
The matter between her and Margaret was their own business. What did it mean if Andrew wanted to kill Margaret?
Her own love and hatred should be resolved by herself, without others' interference.
Selene nodded, "Got it!"
No extra words, just a simple "got it," indicating she would follow Paige's instructions.
Just as Paige finished speaking with Selene, Pearl knocked on the door. "Ms. Ellison, you have a visitor waiting outside."
Paige glanced at Pearl.
She was currently staying at the Carnegie Estate!
Pearl was confused. "A visitor? A visitor who found the Carnegie Estate?"
