Chapter 261 Who Is Wasting Her Time
Paige stood there, watching the staff finish up Luna's grave. Her heart hurt, but she just couldn't bring herself to leave.
A bunch of people showed up to pay their respects to Luna, not just Paige's crew but also folks from the Carnegie family. Louis and Francesca were there too, holding black umbrellas and hanging out in the back.
Philip was a bit closer to the grave, his eyes scanning the crowd. When he turned his head, he spotted Margaret and the Trump family standing off in the distance.
Margaret had shown up after all, but she didn't come any closer. She was dressed in black, and Caleb was next to her, holding an umbrella. Despite the distance, she kept glancing over.
When Philip turned back, he noticed her too. He'd heard about Xena and Paige's history. Even though he'd been home for years, he wasn't totally out of the loop.
But Philip couldn't forgive what Margaret had done before, especially since Paige had almost died because of her. He didn't even give Margaret, who was standing far away and too scared to come closer, a second look.
Luna was finally buried, and everyone stepped up to bow and lay flowers. When Francesca and Louis went up, Paige realized they were there too. But since it was Luna's funeral, she didn't stop them.
She hadn't started her investigation yet, so even if Francesca was the culprit, she'd wait for the results before doing anything.
After everyone laid their flowers and said their goodbyes, the funeral wrapped up.
The guests left first. Paige, at the back, was about to leave when she saw Margaret standing there. Unsure of the reason she showed up here, Paige turned to look at Pearl.
Pearl got the hint. "Yesterday, Margaret waited outside the funeral home for a long time. Knowing you didn't want to see her, she eventually left. No one told her about Luna's funeral today. I don't know how she found out, but she still came."
Paige said, "It doesn't matter, as long as she doesn't come over, let her be."
Margaret didn't come to Luna's grave without Paige's permission. She knew better than to upset Paige. Standing far away, she wouldn't bother Paige.
Pearl glanced at Margaret, who was far enough away and not blocking Paige's path. "She probably wants to come over after we all leave."
Paige nodded. "Let her, as long as she's not in my sight."
Margaret wanted to see Luna; that was her business. As long as Paige wasn't there, she could come whenever she wanted. Paige couldn't control that.
Paige and her group left the cemetery. After their cars had driven far away, Margaret wiped the tears from her eyes and said, "Let's take a look."
Caleb followed Margaret over. Luna's grave was just finished, looking much newer than the others around it.
Margaret turned back, and Caleb handed her the white gardenias he had prepared. Margaret placed the flowers in front of Luna's tombstone.
"I know you don't like chrysanthemums, so I got gardenias. You used to plant gardenia trees in the garden, but I didn't like them. I thought they smelled too strong and cheap, like something from the countryside, so I had them removed."
Margaret took a couple of steps back, staring at Luna's black-and-white photo on the tombstone. She whispered, "I'm sorry. I treated you so badly. It's all my fault. I deserve everything that's happening to me now. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have ended up like this. You left so young."
She paused, her voice breaking. "With you gone, Xena's gone too. Paige will hate me forever. I deserve it, but why did you have to leave so soon? You didn't give me a chance to make things right."
Margaret cried with regret, but the dead don't come back. Even Paige, who was heartbroken, had to accept that.
No matter how much Margaret's heart ached, the tombstone in front of her was still just a tombstone. The photo on it would never turn back into a living person.
Caleb supported Margaret. "Aunt Margaret, please try to calm down. Your body can't handle this."
Margaret hadn't been able to see Luna one last time, not even at the farewell to the body. Now, she could only come here after Paige had left.
Through her sobs, Margaret cried out, "All these years, I wronged her. If I hadn't treated her so badly, she wouldn't have been so weak. She wouldn't have been poisoned in the hospital. I should have made it up to her, but now she's gone."
Caleb said, "Aunt Margaret, the dead can't come back. You need to take care of yourself. Paige is still here, isn't she? For Paige's sake, we need to think long-term."
Margaret said, "If she were still here, she could have recovered and become a bridge between Paige and me after the surgery, slowly mending our relationship. Now that she's gone, Paige will only hate me more."
Margaret understood everything. She knew how important Luna being alive was, and she also knew that with Luna's death, Paige had no reason to stay connected to the Sackler family. Margaret looked on, her heart aching even more.
After staying in the cemetery for a while, the rain got heavier, and Margaret finally left and went back to the hospital.
With Luna's burial, she was finally at peace. But Paige's pain had nowhere to go. Her investigation and revenge had officially started. In fact, the investigation hadn't stopped these past two days.
Paige couldn't focus on living well or working; all she could think about was avenging Luna.
At lunchtime, she sat in the study at Willow Crest Estate, watching Pearl bring the investigation materials from the past two days to her over and over, without any appetite.
Paige reviewed them repeatedly, scrutinizing all the surveillance footage she could find. She discovered that when she was rushing to the hospital room, a few people had bumped into her on purpose.
Someone was delaying her! Because of this, she was a few minutes late getting back to Luna's room. If she had been a few minutes earlier, maybe Luna could have been saved, and the poisoning wouldn't have been so severe.
Paige's eyes coldly locked onto the two people who had bumped into her on the screen. She then ordered in a cold voice, "Julian, track down these two people. I want to know who sent them to delay me!"
