Chapter 242 Can You Give What I Want?
Margaret was getting all worked up, her blood pressure probably through the roof. Paige just watched, smirking to herself.
Back when they treated her and Luna like dirt, did they even think to double-check anything? If they had, maybe things wouldn't have gone so wrong, and she wouldn't have had to leave Luna when she was just a kid.
When Paige needed her family, love, and someone to care for her, Margaret was likely too preoccupied with pampering Xena and preparing her to be the Sackler family heir.
'And now, she wants me to come back? What a joke!' Paige glanced at the time; she could let Margaret ramble on a bit more. If Margaret didn't get it all out, she'd just keep bugging her. Paige figured she might as well listen and get this over with.Despite all Margaret's blabbering, Paige's poker face was making her more and more uneasy. "Paige, what's on your mind? Just tell me what you want, and I'll do it." Margaret was getting desperate; Paige's silence was freaking her out.
Paige finally plopped down, leaning back on the sofa, and started talking slowly. She didn't even look at Margaret; her eyes wandered to the window, looking kind of lost. She was wondering what she really wanted.
Her mind drifted, and Paige said, "When I was still a Sackler kid, I wanted that Barbie doll my grandma tossed in the trash. My mom made all these cute little dresses for it, and I never got to put them on my Barbie. Later, I wanted my grandma to stop favoring boys over girls, always telling my pregnant mom it had to be a boy.''
''I didn't want to hear my grandma saying every day, 'Paige, you're the big sister. When your mom has your little brother, you have to let him have his way and protect him.' Don't I deserve to be protected too?''
''Then, my sister was born, not the brother my grandma wanted. I was a bit happy, but seeing my grandma treat her even worse than me, I wanted my grandma to treat my sister better. Later, when I was labeled the Sackler family's illegitimate kid, forced away from my mom, and kicked out of the family, I wanted to go back to my mom and dad.''
''When they brought me back to the Sackler family at eight to draw blood, I was almost dying, but I didn't regret it. I thought I'd get what I wanted after that. But nope, I didn't! When my mom was pushed down the stairs, I wanted her to be saved. I'd rather go to jail if it meant she could be healthy."
Paige's eyes snapped back from the window to Margaret. "You ask me what I want. Can you give me any of these things?"
Paige's words hit Margaret like a ton of bricks, bringing her to tears. When Paige finally stopped talking, Margaret couldn't keep it together. Paige's message was clear—she had no intention of forgiving her. "Paige, I know I messed up. I know we can't change the past. But I really want to make things right now. Can you give me a chance?"
Paige sighed. "If I had a choice, I'd wish we weren't even related. Maybe then we could patch things up. In the future, my Universe Group wouldn't go after the Sackler Group. I originally didn't want to see you because you brought me so much pain.''
''I can let go of my crappy childhood now that I'm grown. But I can't let go of what happened to my mom. Do you know, even after a kidney transplant, her body will never be the same? And it's all because of you. We were never meant to be family. Now, I don't need anything from you.''
''I hope after this talk, we never have to see each other again. If possible, consider the fifty million dollars Raymond gave you as cutting our blood ties. I don't need compensation, and I don't need family anymore!"
Paige finished and stood up. She thought she had made herself clear and said everything necessary. Now, she just wanted to get out of there and have nothing more to do with Margaret.
Margaret was clearly shaken by Paige's words. She was super emotional. "Paige, are you really not going to forgive me? I have nothing left. My son, your father, is gone. You're the only family I have left in this world."
Paige said, "If that's the case, then we're just related by blood. Lots of people have blood relations but terrible family relationships. There's no need for us to try to fix ours.''''Mrs. Sackler, I'm not going back to being a Sackler. I'm already part of the Ellison family, taking on what I should. My ties with the Sackler family were cut long ago. The bond between us was destroyed by you. Let's end it here."
Given Paige's character, she would have left after saying this. But she knew Margaret's stubbornness. If she left now, Margaret might do something drastic.
So Paige stayed, hoping Margaret would get it and not show up at her place. Margaret, now old and crying, looked at Paige with longing.
Paige glanced at the monitoring equipment; Margaret's condition wasn't great, but it wasn't critical either. This meant she could still handle it.
Paige said, "I'm really busy; the company has a lot going on. My mom is also about to have surgery. I don't want the Sackler family bothering us anymore. If you want to make it up to me, leave me alone and never bother me and my mom again. Can that be considered compensation?"
Margaret asked, "Paige, do you really hate me that much?"
Paige replied, "We were never meant to be family."
