Chapter 239 Take Care of Yourself
Elijah edged a bit closer, but Xena let out a terrified scream. He quickly stepped back, trying to calm her down. "Alright, alright, I'm backing off. No need to be scared."
As he spoke, Elijah kept moving back until Xena stopped screaming. He didn't dare approach Xena anymore and instead placed the food he brought for her to the side.
"See? I'm leaving it here and staying way over here. Can you come get it yourself? Don't worry, it's not poisoned or anything. It's safe. Do you remember me? I'm Elijah. We used to play together when we were kids." Elijah hoped to jog her memory, but Xena didn't respond at all.
In the end, he just watched as Xena stared at the food. Once he was far enough away, she slowly crept over, grabbed the food with her dirty hands, and retreated back to her corner, eating like she hadn't seen food in days.Seeing her like this, Elijah sighed and muttered, "I can't believe you really lost it. Even pretending to be crazy would be better than this. How did you actually go insane?"
Feeling disappointed, Elijah slowly walked out of the room. Maybe because Xena had just been brought here, or maybe because the Sackler family wanted to keep her quiet, the mental hospital had given her a private room.
After stepping out, Elijah closed the door and sat down on a chair outside, staring blankly. He sat there for a long time, looking pretty upset.
After a while, he got up to leave. Just as he was about to go, a nurse came over with a tray of medication. Elijah immediately asked, "Is that for Xena?"
The nurse looked confused. "Xena? You mean the patient in the room behind you?"
Elijah nodded. "Yeah."
The nurse replied, "She doesn't have a name here, just a patient number. This medication is for her. Why?"
Seeing the tray also had a syringe, Elijah asked, "Is there an injection too? She's really scared of needles."
The nurse smiled. "Sir, she's a patient who causes disturbances. Last night, we didn't give her an injection at first, but she caused such a ruckus that we had to sedate her. She's still very unstable, so she needs her meds. And it doesn't hurt much, don't worry."
Elijah grabbed the nurse's arm but then let go. It was pointless. Xena didn't even have her own name in this place. It had to be Margaret's doing. Now that her identity was confirmed, Margaret didn't think she deserved the name Xena.The real Xena had died years ago.
Feeling down, Elijah left the mental hospital and drove straight to the hospital. By this time, Margaret and Caleb had also returned to the hospital.
Seeing Elijah come in looking down, Caleb asked, "Where'd you go? We've been telling you not to wander off, to stay here and take care of your grandma. Did you forget?"
Caleb's scolding didn't seem to faze Elijah at all. Instead, he went straight to the point. "Grandma, can we get Xena out of the mental hospital? She's terrified there, and she's never been through anything like this. Even if she's not your biological granddaughter, she's the child you raised. Margaret had been in a pretty good mood after hearing Paige would visit, but Elijah's words set her off. Margaret flew into a rage, almost losing it. After a moment to catch her breath, she snapped, "You went to see that bitch at the mental hospital?"
Elijah couldn't stand hearing her called a 'bitch.' He quickly said, "Grandma, Xena is the child you raised. You've always loved her so much. Can you really bear to see her like this? She's in the mental hospital, too scared to eat or sleep. The doctors have to give her injections at night just to make her sleep. Grandma, have you forgotten how much you used to care for her?"
Before Elijah could finish, Margaret slapped him hard across the face, the sound echoing in the room. "You dare plead for that bitch? Are you blind or stupid? That bitch is the child of human traffickers. My real granddaughter, the real Xena, died because of those traffickers.''
''They killed my biological granddaughter and sent their despicable offspring to my home, pretending to be the heir. And they even dared to mess with Paige's medical report.''
''How have I treated Paige all these years because of them? Now, Paige doesn't acknowledge me, and my little granddaughter died early. All of this is because of that bitch and her trafficker parents.''
''I said I would sue them for murdering my granddaughter. And that bitch, she still wants to take the forty million dollars. Are you stupid to plead for someone like that?" Margaret was so agitated that her body trembled uncontrollably.
Seeing things were getting out of hand, Caleb quickly pushed Elijah out of the room. Inside, others were trying to calm Margaret down.
Outside, Caleb also laid into Elijah, "You usually seem smart, so why are you so clueless now? Don't you know your grandmother's condition and you still say these things in front of her?
