Chapter 249 What a Coincidence, the Surveillance Was Also Broken
Margaret glanced around, frowning. "Where the heck did Elijah disappear to?"
Caleb kept his mouth shut. He had folks keeping tabs on the mental hospital, but Elijah was practically living there, bringing good food to Xena every day.
Caleb had been hanging around the hospital too. He knew Margaret didn't want to hear a peep about Xena right now, so he wouldn't dare mention that Elijah was off visiting her.
Thinking about it made Caleb's blood boil. 'How could someone as useless as Xena drag Elijah down like this?' Elijah seemed bewitched by Xena, always thinking about her, even though she came from a family of human traffickers.
In the past, Elijah often followed Xena around, which was somewhat acceptable given their blood relation. But now that Xena's true nature had been revealed as worthless and despicable, Elijah still stayed close to her. It was a slap in the face to the family's reputation! Caleb couldn't vent his anger right now, so he just had to wait.
Margaret spotted Paige from a distance. She'd heard that the surgery was scheduled for tomorrow, but tonight Luna was rushed to the emergency room. Margaret was baffled, not knowing what was going on.
Now, determined to make things right with Paige, Margaret tried to see everything from Paige's perspective. With Luna in the emergency room, Paige must be feeling awful. She adored Luna and saw her as the only family she had. If anything happened, it would be a nightmare.
After thirty minutes of resuscitation, there was still no news. Margaret stood outside, feeling drained and anxious. But at least it meant Luna still had a fighting chance. It was better than hearing bad news from the emergency room.
Margaret had been standing outside for half an hour, swaying on her feet, but she refused to leave. Caleb suggested, "Aunt Margaret, let's head back to the ward. Standing here won't help. I'll have someone update us right away."
Margaret waved him off. "No, let's stay here. Waiting with Paige is all I can do now. I'm not that frail yet. Besides, I owe Luna. If it weren't for me, she wouldn't be in this mess."
Margaret spoke with regret. There wasn't much she could do now, just wait. Seeing he couldn't convince her, Caleb stopped trying and waited with her.
Time dragged on. Paige grew more anxious and restless. Luna was everything to her, her only family in the world. She used to hope that since she wasn't part of the Sackler family, her biological father might still be alive. But now, she couldn't hold onto that hope anymore.
She was proven to be a Sackler, which meant her father had long passed away. Her biological sister was gone too, leaving only Luna. Paige's body shook a bit, scared that her last tie to this world was about to snap.
Raymond stayed close, gently holding her to keep her steady. He didn't say a word, just quietly stayed by her side.
Amelia had asked for the surveillance footage, and Harrison showed up with the security team to apologize. Sensing the tension, Harrison lowered his voice. "Ms. Smith, we checked the footage, but..."
Amelia glanced at Paige and whispered, "What's wrong with the surveillance?"
She wondered, 'Did the cameras miss it? Otherwise, Harrison wouldn't have explained it to me personally.'
Harrison looked down, clueless. "The cameras were broken. Nothing got recorded during that time. We don't know why, since our equipment is checked and maintained monthly."
Even though they spoke softly, Paige heard everything. Hearing about the surveillance issue, she turned around, feeling even more frustrated. Seeing Paige's reaction, Amelia quickly brought Harrison over.
Paige's voice was calm but carried a storm of anger. "I know why. Your surveillance was hacked." She then looked at Cecil, who had been silently watching the emergency room. Noticing her gaze, Cecil walked over.
Paige said to Cecil, "The hospital's surveillance is down. Help them fix it and see if it was a technical issue or human interference." Cecil nodded seriously. This was no big deal for him.
Margaret couldn't hear what Paige and the others were saying and anxiously looked at Caleb. "Where's Elijah? Go find out what's going on. Why is Harrison here at the emergency room door with security guards? Find out now."
Caleb nodded. "I'll call him right away."
Caleb called Elijah, but no one answered. Elijah seemed busy with something important. Caleb called again and again, but got the same result. Margaret was desperate to know what was happening, so Caleb had his assistant investigate.
In this hospital, the Smith family had already made arrangements. It was tough to get detailed info about Luna's condition. However, Caleb's subordinate heard that the surveillance was down.
Margaret was puzzled. "What does the surveillance being down have to do with this? Did something really happen?" Thinking this way, Margaret felt the situation was serious.
At that moment, the emergency room door, which everyone had been watching, opened. Hearing the sound, Paige immediately went up.
The doctor came out, but Luna's bed wasn't pushed out. The lead doctor, along with other medical staff, approached Paige and shook his head.
