Chapter 240 Trying to Make Amends
Caleb's words hit Elijah hard. He'd really missed the mark. Xena wasn't the Sackler family heir anymore. Margaret's been too sick and too focused on getting Paige back to officially kick Xena out of the family.
Given the years of resentment, Margaret hated Xena's trafficker parents and Xena herself for bullying Paige and framing her multiple times.
Margaret and Paige would never let Xena off the hook. In Northwind, someone who crossed the Sackler family, the Carnegie family, and the Universe Group could vanish without a trace.
Elijah couldn't process everything. All he could think about was how to get Xena out of this mess.
The next day, Elijah found an excuse to sneak into the mental hospital to see Xena. She was still the same, terrified of anyone getting close.
Even the nurses were at a loss; it took several of them to hold her down just to give her an injection. Meanwhile, Elijah was on the hunt for a better doctor for Xena.
After a good night's sleep, Margaret was back on her feet. Paige had agreed to see her, so Margaret was trying to patch things up with her.
First thing in the morning, Margaret called a meeting with several top execs of the Sackler Group.
The big projects Margaret had been clinging to—she'd rather lie to Raymond to get the money than sell them—were now handed over to her team. They were tasked with finding the most genuine partners or highest bidders, aiming to liquidate everything.
After the meeting, Margaret's first move was to figure out how to recover the $40 million Xena had embezzled. Even though the Sackler family couldn't officially recognize Xena anymore, she was still technically the heir. Margaret had a long chat with the lawyer, making the most of the situation.
With a diagnosis report confirming Xena's mental issues, Margaret reissued Xena's ID and other documents, then waited for the money to be transferred back from the overseas account.
Meanwhile, Paige and Raymond had spent the night in a two-bedroom apartment, but Paige didn't feel like making breakfast the next morning.
Raymond saw it coming and had Charles bring breakfast over early. After eating, Paige clung to Raymond, feeling sore from the night before.
So, after breakfast, Raymond stayed with Paige for another nap. After lunch, they left the apartment, with someone coming to clean up.
Paige had promised Margaret she'd visit today, so after leaving the apartment, she headed straight to the hospital. But instead of going directly to Margaret's ward, she went to see Luna first.
In the ward, Luna was awake. When she saw Paige, her face lit up with a big smile. "Mom," Paige called out, hurrying over. Luna perked up a bit at the sight of her. But she was still really weak, half-lying on the hospital bed. Seeing Paige brought a bit of joy to her face.
She looked so frail that it broke everyone's heart to see her like that. Paige felt the pain but knew there was nothing she could do but wait.
"Paige... my kid..." Luna's speech was still tough, but Paige was used to it and could piece together her broken words.
Paige apologized, "Sorry, I've been super busy these past few days and couldn't be here with you."
Luna shook her head slowly, a flash of pain crossing her face, probably from some discomfort. Before Paige could ask if she was in pain, Luna forced a smile for her. "Mom, you'll have surgery soon. After that, you'll get better."
Luna tried to lift her hand to touch Paige, but she was too weak. Paige quickly grabbed her hand and placed it on her cheek. "Are you tired?" Luna's fingers moved slightly, caressing Paige's cheek.
Paige shook her head. She was actually exhausted, emotionally drained. The thought of being unfairly separated from Luna for so many years, only to finally reunite and find her health deteriorating, was truly heartbreaking. But Luna had held on until now. Paige couldn't bear to lose her; she just wanted more time together.
After Luna's surgery, she would slowly recover. In the future, she could see Paige have her own kids, and maybe even play with them if her health allowed. This was Paige's dream.
She no longer blamed fate for its unfairness, for separating her from Luna when she was young and for keeping them apart when she needed her mom most. And Luna had wasted half her life trapped in the Sackler family. Ultimately, it was because Margaret was too ruthless. If she had even a bit of kindness, she shouldn't have controlled Luna and prevented her from visiting Paige.
Paige leaned her face against Luna's hand. "I'm not tired. Mom, I have to go see another patient next door. I'll be back soon. If I'm not busy, I'll stay with you tonight."
Luna still smiled, her nodding very slight. Paige helped her tuck her hand under the blanket and then walked towards Margaret's ward.
Raymond had just gone to ask the doctor about Luna's condition and happened to meet Paige as she came out. "Do you need me to go with you?"
Paige shook her head. "Stay with my mom; she loves seeing you."
Raymond nodded. "Okay, if anything comes up, call me anytime, and I'll come find you."
Paige responded, "Okay," and went to the next ward.
