Chapter 281 All Her Savings
"Paige, are you here to see Elijah?"
Margaret couldn't help but feel quite emotional upon seeing Paige. However, Paige wasn't as happy to hear Margaret's voice, especially after everything Xena had revealed last night!
Margaret looked at Paige but couldn't simply judge Paige's mood or emotions from her expression.
Seeing that Paige remained silent, Margaret tentatively asked, "Paige, how have you been these past few days?"
Paige finally spoke, "Mrs. Sackler, am I not standing here just fine?"
Realizing Paige's indifference, Margaret toned down her excitement significantly. She said in a subdued tone, "The doctor said I could be discharged today. I didn't expect to run into you here."
Margaret's voice carried a hint of awkwardness after facing Paige's cold demeanor. Despite this, she still wanted to get closer to Paige.
Just when Margaret was feeling a bit regretful that she couldn't get closer to Paige, Paige changed her tone, "Are you going home now?"
Margaret was so surprised that it seemed she didn't hear Paige clearly, "What?"
Paige said "I heard from Xena that on my eighteenth birthday, my mom had prepared a birthday gift for me in advance, supposedly some jewelry, which Xena took away. It should still be around, right?"
Margaret understood. So she immediately nodded, "Yes, there's a safe at home specifically for storing these things."
It was rare for Paige to talk to her, and Margaret got excited again.
Paige asked, "Can I have that item?"
Margaret didn't hesitate to agree to Paige's request.
"Of course, you can. The entire Sackler Family is yours; you can have whatever you want. I'll go back with you to get it right now."
Coincidentally, Margaret had also completed her discharge procedures. Although Paige didn't refuse to go with Margaret to get the item now, she corrected her, "The Sackler Family is not mine. Since the day I was sent to the countryside, the only connection I had with the Sackler Family was my mom. Now that she's gone, I have no relation to your family anymore."
Margaret didn't get angry; she knew Paige wouldn't forgive her anytime soon, but she still had time to make amends. She took Paige back to the Sackler Family's villa.
Margaret was always excited to bring Paige home and immediately instructed the servants to prepare for her reception upon entering.
But Paige said, "I only want the gift my mom picked out for me."
Margaret was eager to host Paige, but Paige didn't want to stay any longer. Knowing she couldn't keep Paige even if she wanted to, Margaret simply nodded.
"Alright, follow me."
Margaret led Paige upstairs, heading straight to the room Xena used to stay in.
The room had already been tidied up by the servants. The pretty things Xena liked were cleared out, leaving only some furniture in their original places.
After walking in and seeing Paige looking around, Margaret said, "Ever since the identification was done, I had people throw away or sell all the things that belonged to Xena. These pieces of furniture are also to be dealt with, but I haven't had time to arrange it since I was in the hospital."
Paige said, "I'm not interested in how you deal with your old stuff."
Margaret gave an awkward smile and said no more, proceeding to open the safe in Xena's room.
As she took the key to open the second layer of the safe, Margaret said to Paige, "The safe was custom-made so that the second layer could hold very important items. Later, she actually put the gift that originally belonged to you in there."
Paige looked at Margaret coldly and said, "How could she have taken it?"
Margaret was stunned by Paige's words, her hand frozen on the safe as if time had stopped. After several seconds, Margaret came to her senses. "Have you already found her?"
Paige replied, "Yes! She's in my hands now."
Margaret turned back to look at the safe and took out an exquisite box from the second layer of the open safe.
She handed it to Paige. "Your mom didn't have much money. Ever since your dad passed away, I strictly controlled her finances. I was afraid that if I gave her too much money, she might get other ideas.
On your eighteenth birthday, she pleaded with me for a long time, and I finally agreed to let her bring you back to stay for a few days.
I didn't know that she spent all her savings to buy this rare diamond named 'Hope' and had it set into a necklace with a sunflower base.
Actually, this diamond was originally part of a set, but her money was only enough to buy this one piece. It was a leftover from the set, and the buyer didn't want this particular piece, so she got it.
Because her money was limited, she drew the design for the necklace herself. It wasn't very good. The jeweler's wife helped her improve it, which is how this necklace came to be.
Maybe because it wasn't very expensive but was very precious, Xena insisted on having it.
I didn't know all this until Xena told me. Your mom put a lot of thought into it, and this is the first time you're seeing it."
Xena only told her last night her birthday gift was taken by Xena, but didn't mention how much effort Luna had put into it.
Paige opened the jewelry box, and the moment she saw the necklace, she almost couldn't hold back her tears. She could tell that the craftsmanship of the setting didn't match the quality of the diamond.
The diamond was top-notch, just a bit small, with ordinary craftsmanship. However, it was evident that the maker had put a lot of effort into it. The design wasn't particularly beautiful, but it was the most perfect necklace for Paige.
The diamond's brilliance occasionally reflected in Paige's eyes. Given her current status, she wouldn't even look at this diamond. But because Luna had spent all her savings and effort to create this coming-of-age gift for her, Paige was moved to tears.
She closed her eyes tightly, forcing back the tears. Paige closed the box, put it in her bag, and then said to Margaret, "You were too cruel!"
With that, Paige turned, walking out without looking back.
Margaret quickly followed, "Xena took the item, but she never wore it. Maybe because she knew it wasn't originally hers, she left it in the second layer of the safe. Paige, I was wrong."
Paige said, "It's unnecessary. It doesn't matter anymore."
On the way, Paige's eyes occasionally blurred with tears, and she had to wipe them away to see the road ahead clearly. She drove to the underground parking lot of the Universe Group.
Before going down to the basement, Paige ordered to leave her alone in the basement.
Julian received the order and immediately arranged it. Paige drove into the empty basement parking lot, parked her car, and finally couldn't hold it in anymore. She leaned on the steering wheel and cried. Luna had loved her deeply for a very long time. Even though they were separated, Luna always thought of her. After crying and venting her emotions, Paige finally lifted her head.
She pulled down the vanity mirror, took out the necklace, and put it around her neck. The necklace was beautiful, but her tear-streaked face didn't quite match it.
Paige quickly found something to clean the tear stains and reapplied makeup to cover her red eyes.
Once she was sure she looked presentable for work, she got out of the car and stepped into the CEO's private elevator. As soon as she stepped out of the elevator, she confidently smiled and nodded in response to her subordinates' respectful greetings.
No one could tell that Paige had just experienced an emotional breakdown. However, when she entered the office, Pearl followed her and immediately noticed something different.
"Ms. Ellison, I haven't seen that necklace on your neck before!"
As Paige's assistant in both work and life, Pearl knew all of Paige's jewelry, each piece very valuable. She had never seen this necklace before, which was small and not very noticeable.
Paige slightly lowered her head, using her fingers to lift the sunflower base and show the diamond to Pearl. "This is the eighteenth birthday gift my mom spent all her savings on for me. Is it beautiful?"
