Chapter 300 Almost Died
Louis's wrist quickly swelled and turned red, but he seemed to feel no pain at all. All his attention was astonishingly focused on the face revealed after the hood was removed.
As Paige spread her palm, the black hood slid from the hand and descended to the ground.
Her expression was graver than ever before.
Louis stared at Paige, and Paige's gaze also fell on Louis.
Paige didn't give any orders, but the bodyguards all stood guard at the door, none of them coming in.
Louis heard the commotion stop at the door, and he turned back to look in surprise.
Seeing the bodyguards' movements, Louis suddenly realized what was happening.
"This is a trap, and you set this up?"
Louis stared at Paige, finding it hard to believe.
It was difficult for him to believe that Paige, who should have been dining at the restaurant at this moment, would appear here.
She was wearing the clothes Xena had on when she was brought in, and the hood Xena had on when she was brought in.
She had actually lured them into the trap herself!
Louis held his breath; he had really underestimated Paige.
Was this still the girl who used to be bullied with him in the countryside?
Paige tore off the tattered, dirty clothes on her body and casually threw them aside. Underneath the ragged clothes, she was wearing her clothes.
The black, form-fitting camisole showed off her fragrant shoulders and collarbones. She didn't rush to answer Louis's question but instead tore off the tattered pants, revealing the black pants she originally wore underneath.
She was barefoot, but her feet were unscathed.
If Louis had been a bit more careful and paid a little more attention, he might have noticed earlier that although Xena was barefoot, her feet were covered in blood, with hardly any intact skin.
Paige tidied herself up before looking up at Louis again.
She spoke coldly and calmly, "Yes, it was me. I lured you into the trap. I just didn't expect that the one who would come would be you, Louis."
At this moment, looking at beautiful Paige, Louis felt such panic and fear in his heart.
He had almost attacked Paige, and that military knife had almost pierced Paige's throat.
The instant this idea occurred, all thoughts of schemes and entrapments vanished from Louis's mind. He was drenched in cold sweat, filled with regret and fear from the depths of his heart.
He had to open his mouth to breathe in enough fresh air. After catching his breath, Louis suddenly exploded with emotion and shouted at Paige.
"Are you crazy? Paige? Are you out of your mind? Putting yourself in such a dangerous situation, is it worth it? What could be worth risking your life? Do you know, just now, just a little bit more, and you would have died."
"I almost killed you, do you have any idea about that? Madness, utter madness... everyone’s gone insane, risking their lives."
Louis felt like his whole body was losing temperature, the kind of cold that shot from his feet straight to his brain.
He was terrified!
This was the only moment he regretted his promise to Francesca.
Louis seemed truly mad, his eyes bloodshot, his forehead sweating, and he was emotionally out of control, shouting at Paige.
However, Paige in front of him remained calm.
After Louis finished venting, Paige spoke calmly and quietly, "Louis, you will always be 'almost', so I won't die!"
Louis was suddenly sobered by Paige's words, like a blow to the head or a lightning strike.
He stood there, spaced out.
He understood Paige's words.
He was regretting and fearing that he had 'almost' killed Paige.
But Paige composedly told him that he couldn't kill her, he couldn't kill Paige in such a short time.
Her confidence made Louis suddenly realize the gap between them.
The extreme pain in his wrist also reminded Louis that his actions were easily neutralized and subdued by Paige. Paige was truly formidable.
Louis snapped out of his emotions, and his mind cleared immediately.
The problem now was that he had come to kill Xena, but Paige had seen through it.
The plan had failed.
Xena wasn't dead, and he was completely exposed!
Paige watched Louis's emotional changes and knew that he was now clear-headed.
Paige grabbed Louis's hand, holding his wrist with one hand and his four fingers with the other. With a bit of force, she moved Louis's fingers slightly, and with a sudden sound of bone friction, Paige reset the dislocated wrist.
Louis's hand still hurt.
Paige said, "Francesca sent you!"
It wasn't a question. Paige wasn't asking Louis.
Hearing Paige's tone, Louis immediately denied it. "No, it has nothing to do with my mom."
Paige suddenly sneered, "Nothing to do with her? Louis, do you know what you're saying? Do you even know what you're doing?"
Louis indeed hadn't expected Paige to be the one here.
Nor had he expected the plan to fail.
But since he had failed and been intercepted by Paige, why drag Francesca into it?
"I know exactly what I'm doing. Xena killed Mrs. Parker, so I hate her, I despise her. I know that you want to kill her to avenge Mrs. Parker, so I act first. No matter the reason, I don't want her to live. If her death can console Mrs. Parker and quell all hatred and anger, I'm willing to be the executioner."
Listening to Louis's words, Paige's gaze fell on him.
Quite responsible, huh?
He was willing to be the executioner?
Paige sneered, "Louis, are you kidding me? That's my hatred, what does it have to do with you? You act first? Who do you think you are?"
As Paige spoke, she became somewhat angry. The target of her investigation was definitely not Louis, who was willing to be the executioner, but Francesca behind Louis!
This undoubtedly allowed Francesca to continue hiding in the shadows.
And clearly, seeing Louis's stance, he intended to take full responsibility. He would never betray Francesca, absolutely not!
Paige once again brushed past the truth, wasting a card in this round!
Now, she only had one card left.
And whether this last card would give her the answers she sought was still unknown.
One could easily imagine Paige's current mood.
Louis's heart was heavily struck by Paige. It hurt, it definitely hurt.
However, he had to find a suitable, at least a reasonable, excuse for his actions.
Louis took a deep breath. "Yes, I know, I know I have no right. From the day I chose the Hawke Corporation's power and stood with the Sackler family to hurt you, I lost the right to do anything for you."
Paige turned around and roared at Louis, "I'm talking about you ruining my plan. Don't mix this with your messy feelings and try to confuse the issue."
"Louis, I'm not an idiot! Don't tell me those stories meant to deceive fools."
After saying that, Paige cried out to the bodyguards outside, "Bring Francesca here, go get her now."
Louis became anxious. "Paige, this has nothing to do with my mom."
"We'll see soon." Paige said, then ordered outside, "Bring those three people here, one by one, into this room."
Louis's heart trembled. Francesca had already confessed to him that those three were her people.
Paige hadn't touched those three before, but now it seemed she had deliberately left them alone.
Louis urgently defended himself again, "Paige, listen to me, this really has nothing to do with my mom. It was me, I wanted to kill Xena."
"I feel guilty towards both you and Xena."
"I hate her, and I despise her, but after all, I once used her. I know she won't have a good time in your hands and definitely won't survive."
"So I..." Louis hastily made up a story, finding an excuse, and then paused.
After thinking for a moment, he continued, "So I wanted to give her a quick death. You want her dead too, don't you? Since that's the case, though our methods differ, the result is the same, right?"
"Paige, please don't alarm my mom. She doesn't know about any of these, and I fear it will scare her."
Louis's action had failed, that was a fact.
But he also knew very well that if Francesca got dragged into this, the outcome would be even worse.
So he had to separate Francesca from this incident and not let her get involved.
Paige listened to Louis's words and laughed, a smile that was superficial and even somewhat mocking.
"Louis, are you stupid, or do you think I'm stupid? Is this how Francesca raised you? To push her son out to take the blame at the key point?"
‘’How could she be called 'mother'? Hiding in the back and using you as a shield?"
"Truly an unqualified mother she was!"
As soon as Paige said this, Louis immediately denied it. "No, my mom is not like that. She has nothing to do with this!"
Paige's tone became even more mocking. "Louis, I'm really surprised, you know? The person who came to kill Xena turned out to be you!"
"Even if she did it herself, I would still think she had some capability."
"I didn't expect that after I blocked everyone around her when she had no one to use, she would push you out."
"Isn't she afraid of any accidents, that you might get hurt, or that you might see that Quentin brought armed guards around? Isn't Francesca afraid of losing your life?"
Louis was drenched in cold sweat. He knew very well that Francesca loved him, loved him deeply.
But he couldn't deny that Paige's words made a lot of sense.
What if something unexpected happens?
Paige suddenly smiled, "Louis, I can't see her through, really, I can't see her through at all."
"On one hand, she says she absolutely won't agree to you donating a kidney to my mom. As a mother, worrying about her son, I can understand that."
"But on the other hand, she pushes you into such danger, why did she do this?"
"Louis, can you answer this for me?"
Louis took a deep breath and said slowly, "This time, it was my decision. It has nothing to do with my mom. She didn't push me into danger; I can't let Xena live!"
Paige seemed not to hear.
Anyway, what Louis said wasn't what she wanted to hear, so it didn't matter if she heard it or not.
"She already sent someone to assassinate in Northern Country once, and no one suspected her at that time."
"Quentin also thought it was just his business rival."
"But today, I realized it was her."
"Louis, the last two people my mom saw before she died were Francesca and Xena."
"Francesca first, then Xena."
"Don't you wonder why, after my mom died, Francesca had to kill Xena?"
Louis suddenly raised his voice. "It's not my mom, it's me, it's me, I want to kill Xena, it has nothing to do with my mom." Louis anxiously defended, because Paige's tone was so certain.
Paige didn't even look at Louis, she sneered, "No other reason, unless she also wanted my mom dead. And it just so happened that Xena saw it. She's afraid that Raymond and I will take everything you have, so after my mom died, and before Raymond and I could take action against you for the Carnegie family's assets, she had to kill Xena first to prevent her from telling me the truth. She was afraid that I would join forces with Raymond to fight for the assets, Isn't that right?"
Louis shook his head in terror, even though he had thought the same, he couldn't admit it.
"It's not true, Paige, my mom is not like that."
Paige angrily retorted, "Not true? Then tell me, what kind of person is she? A mother who pushes her son into a trap and hides herself, what kind of mother is she? What else is she capable of?"
As soon as Paige finished speaking, an urgent and surprised voice came from the door. "Paige, weren't you dining at the restaurant? How are you here?"
