Chapter 339 More Real Than the Truth
Margaret was indeed here for an answer.
Paige said it was her son, Steven Sackler, who swapped out Louis.
Francesca must have known, and if so, she must have wanted to get to the bottom of it.
Margaret looked at Francesca, her face pale, seemingly feverish, lacking the usual elegant and clear aura she once had.
It hadn't been long since they last met, but it was clear that Francesca had become much more haggard.
Margaret was truly puzzled.
She couldn't wait and asked first, "Paige told me that Steven knew that Luna gave birth to a son. That day, when Luna gave birth, Steven accompanied her into the delivery room. The child he later brought out from the delivery room and handed to me was Paige. Why did you take my grandson away? Why did you abandon Paige? You are her biological mother. For the sake of the Sackler family's reputation, I ruthlessly sent Paige to the countryside, and you didn't care at all. Now, why do you want to reveal this truth?"
Margret added, "Do you know, before Luna gave birth, my friends, relatives, and even experienced obstetricians at the hospital all said that Luna was carrying a boy. If it weren't for those words, I might not have had such high expectations, and later, I wouldn't have neglected Paige so much. How did you do it? Even if you swapped them, why did everyone bully Paige? I bullied her, and you as her biological mother, abandoned her? She lived like an orphan in the countryside for many years and was imprisoned for five years."
Francesca, listening to Margaret's questions, was already in tears.
Francesca choked up, "I didn't know she was my daughter. Louis and Paige were born on the same day, in the same hospital. Swapping the children was my decision, but I didn't carry it out. Steven and Gregory handled it separately. In other words, only Gregory and Steven knew where the children were swapped."
Francesca added, "Gregory could have told me, but I was afraid I wouldn't be able to resist looking for my daughter, so I didn't want him to tell me. I just needed to know that my daughter was alive in this world, as long as she was alive, that was enough! Steven was the same. He knew where his son was, and he knew Gregory would treat his son well. I thought you would treat Paige well too. I thought Steven would at least take Paige seriously."
Margaret said, "He was too busy, he didn't have time to take care of things at home. Until the moment he died, he was still busy with work. I don't know why he was so busy. You said Gregory was his boss? What does that mean?"
Francesca suddenly composed herself, realizing she had misspoken.
She had been in a terrible mental state these past few days!
Francesca quickly corrected herself. "I misspoke. Mrs. Sackler, regarding the child swap, Gregory, Steven, and I were all aware. On the day the two children were born, there was a hidden door between the two delivery rooms. All the medical staff in the delivery room were arranged by Gregory in advance. After Louis was born, Luna passed out. Actually, whether she passed out or not, the result would have been the same."
Francesca added, "If she didn't pass out, the doctors would have made her pass out. Steven was determined to keep this from her, fearing she couldn't handle it. It just happened that she passed out from exhaustion after giving birth. At that moment, the doctor opened the hidden door, and Steven brought Louis to Gregory to swap for Paige. I only knew that my daughter could survive somewhere else. Every day she wasn't with me, she would grow up on time. As long as she was alive, that was enough!"
Margaret shook her head, unable to accept this answer, "What kind of talk is that, just being alive? You did all these things I didn't know. Steven was originally a very obedient child, why would he do something that betrays the family? Why did he give his child to you?"
Francesca bit her lip. Things had come to this point, and she had to give Margaret a reasonable answer.
This answer had to be reasonable not just to Margaret but to everyone in the Carnegie family.
This was her explanation, and she had to give it!
Francesca mentally prepared herself while Margaret kept watching her, waiting for the answer.
Finally, Francesca said, "Isn't it obvious? I wanted a son to secure my position and inheritance in the Carnegie family. Steven probably wanted his son to rise to a stronger position too. If you think about it, you should know that the Sackler family's status has been declining over the years. Isn't that right? With this child, wouldn't the Sackler family be able to secure its status?"
Margaret listened to this answer with a heart full of pain, tears streaming down her face, "Steven was ambitious, but not to this extent. What did you promise him?"
Francesca replied, "You'd have to ask Gregory, but unfortunately, after Steven passed away, Gregory also died. With their deaths, the past should have been buried. But I didn't expect Luna would need a kidney transplant. Fate tied Louis and Paige so closely together. They swapped destinies at birth, went through so many hardships, and met again. When Luna needed a kidney transplant, Louis was a match for her. The secret that should have been buried for a lifetime started to surface the moment the match was successful, and I became uneasy."
Francesca added, "I couldn't let them go through with the transplant, fearing the truth buried for twenty-three years would come to light. I went to the hospital to see Luna, told her the truth, and asked her to refuse the transplant. She nodded and gave me her hair. I did a test, and at that moment, I knew the truth I had been trying to hide was about to surface. I feared this exposure the most. I thought Luna could hold on until a new kidney was found, but fate didn't give me a chance. She passed away, and Paige went mad with revenge. That night, Xena saw something outside the door. From then on, nothing could be hidden."
As Francesca spoke, Margaret, sitting not far away, was like a wooden stake, motionless.
Her expression was filled with disbelief.
After Francesca finished speaking, tears slowly fell from her eyes.
Perhaps it was these tears that woke Margaret. She slowly stood up. "Evil."
Francesca bit her lip, saying nothing more, but screamed in her heart. ' I'm sorry, things haven't reached the final step yet, there needs to be an answer that seems more real than the truth itself. Don't blame me!'
