Chapter 146 She Had a Dream Where She Reconciled with Henry
After Seraphina's funeral, life went back to normal.
Henry started coming home more often, but he and Grace stayed distant. They barely talked during meals, slept apart, and sometimes he even crashed in the guest room. Occasionally, he'd hold her at night, gently touching her swollen belly, feeling their baby.
Grace would stay quiet, letting him feel the baby. It seemed like the only thing left between them was the child. Everything else was gone.
Grace forgot she once loved Henry, and he forgot he wanted to make it up to her. He even forgot saying, "Grace, I want a daughter. When I come home from work, she will run up and hug my leg, calling me daddy."
They only remembered the hurt, not the good times. They couldn't go back. Neither could swallow their pride to get closer, not even for a hug or a word of reconciliation.
A month after Seraphina's passing, Grace, now eight months pregnant, stayed indoors most of the time. Juniper managed all her shops.
One evening, she got a call from Celeste.
Celeste spoke respectfully, "Mr. Montague has to go on a business trip. Could Mrs. Montague please pack a few changes of clothes and his passport for him?"
'A passport? Is Henry going abroad?' she wondered.
Grace guessed something came up with Elodie, and this trip was last-minute. She didn't ask questions and packed a few changes of clothes and his passport.
Half an hour later, Celeste came to pick up the luggage.
When Celeste took the passport, she said, "Elodie's last organ transplant is being rejected. She probably doesn't have much time left. Whether Mr. Montague goes or not doesn't make much difference. Mrs. Montague, I can see you and Mr. Montague have feelings for each other. There's no need to distance yourselves because of Elodie. Besides, you're about to have a lovely child!"
Grace didn't argue; she just smiled faintly.
Only she knew the ups and downs of their four-year marriage.
Everyone thought Grace was more important to Henry. She used to think so too, but that night, Henry's slap woke her up.
Henry had secrets, and recalling Elodie playing the violin was a cherished memory for him. It seemed absurd, but she found no need to explain since he refused to believe her.
Seeing Grace's expression, Celeste sighed and left.
Henry was gone for a week.
When he returned, they continued to be cold to each other.
He didn't ask her to stay, and Grace didn't mention reconciliation.
Their relationship was so cold that Juniper felt incredibly guilty. If it weren't for her, Grace would never have returned to Henry.
Grace always said she was doing well, but Juniper wasn't blind. Grace's face showed her unhappiness, and Oliver's case was becoming more troublesome.
In a café, Grace pushed a check across the table. "This $600,000 is the dividend for the past six months. Next year should be even better. The store in Vesper City is doing better than the one here in Evergreen City."
"Grace!" Juniper held her hand and whispered, "I'm sorry!"
Grace was momentarily stunned, then understood. She gently stroked her swollen belly and smiled faintly, "Did you hear something? Juniper, you don't need to feel guilty. From what Henry said, the child will be with me. I won't be lonely with the baby."
Grace spoke lightly, but Juniper knew Grace had given up her shot at happiness for her. Even if Grace was young, beautiful, and successful, finding someone suitable would be tough.
Juniper's eyes filled with tears. "I'll love the child!"
Grace smiled slightly.
Juniper stayed a bit longer, then left to watch over the store.
Grace sat alone by the floor-to-ceiling window. The setting sun cast a soft orange glow on her face, adding warmth.
At that moment, Taylor moved gently in her belly, seeming very happy.
Grace placed her hand on her swollen belly, feeling the presence of the child, her heart filled with warmth. She imagined what Taylor would look like, and just thinking about it made her smile.
Taylor was due in early winter. Grace went to the mall and bought many little pink clothes for Taylor, all very cute.
Passing through the men's section, a saleswoman approached her.
"Hello, our brand is having a promotion today, 12% off everything. We usually don't offer discounts. This is a special anniversary sale," the saleswoman said enthusiastically.
Grace vaguely remembered Henry once asking her to buy him a couple of shirts, but she hadn't agreed.
She thought for a moment and walked into the store. Considering Henry's age, she bought him two shirts and matching ties. She used to manage all of Henry's daily needs, but now it felt unfamiliar.
Maybe it was because they were about to part ways.
When Grace returned to the villa, Henry wasn't home yet.
The maid helped her carry the things upstairs. Seeing the men's shirts, the maid was happy. "Mrs. Montague, dinner will be ready in half an hour. You should rest first, and I'll call you when it's ready!"
Grace was indeed tired. She nodded, leaned back on the sofa, and closed her eyes. The maid thoughtfully covered her with a blanket and quietly went downstairs.
Grace fell asleep and had a dream.
She dreamt that Taylor was born, very cute. When Taylor was a few years old, she and Henry were holding Taylor's hand, walking under the green sycamore trees. Taylor looked up, constantly asking questions.
Then, Henry squatted down and picked up Taylor.
Taylor lay on Henry's shoulder, softly calling him daddy.
Grace woke up from the dream, holding her swollen belly, slowly sitting up. She stared blankly at the night outside the window.
She still remembered in the dream, Taylor hugging Henry's neck, calling him daddy. Her eyes were slightly moist.
At the door, Mira entered. She had just come upstairs and heard a phone ringing in the study. When she answered, it was a foreigner speaking. Not understanding, she hung up.
She was about to tell Grace when a sudden thunderclap sounded.
Mira forgot what she wanted to say. She ran to the window, closed it tightly, and muttered, "It's autumn, and it's still thundering. Mrs. Montague, did it scare you?"
Grace shook her head gently and asked hoarsely, "Has Mr. Montague come back?"
Mira paused. "No! Mrs. Montague, let's have dinner first. The baby in your belly can't go hungry."
Grace smiled faintly.
Mira was very considerate, coming over to help her. "The baby will be born in a month, but Mrs. Montague, you haven't gained much weight! Unlike my daughter-in-law, who gained 30 pounds."
Grace smiled lightly, "Being able to eat is a blessing!"
Mira helped her downstairs, continuing to chat, "I'll be going back to take care of my daughter-in-law when she gives birth. I'll be back in a month, just in time for your delivery."
Grace gently stroked her belly, her heart full of warmth.
