Chapter 342 That Evening, She Definitely Wouldn't Go with Him
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the twilight deepened.
But in Sarah's world, it was pitch black. She couldn't see the morning light, the evening glow, or Jacob.
With Oliver gone, Olivia brought Jacob over, guiding his tiny hand to hold Sarah's.
Tears welled up in Olivia's eyes. "Jacob, call Mommy."
Sarah's cold hand held Jacob's warm little one. Worried about chilling him, she reluctantly let go after a bit.
Jacob seemed to sense Sarah's discomfort and softly called out, "Mommy, Mommy..."
Olivia wiped her tears and said, "Mrs. Windsor, Jacob's calling you! He's such a good boy! For Jacob's sake, you need to hang in there. Maybe things can get better. Mr. Windsor has found the best doctors and the latest medical equipment for you. Maybe there will be a miracle!"
After Olivia finished speaking, Sarah gave a faint smile and said to Olivia, "I know him best! Now that he's about to lose me, he feels he loves me so much. But once I get better, he'll remember all the hatred. Someone as heartless as him would never let me or Dylan go. Besides, it's too late."
As she spoke, she started coughing violently.
She lovingly caressed Jacob again and said in between coughs, "Take Jacob back! It's not good for him to stay with me."
Olivia felt sad and whispered, "Let Jacob stay with you a little longer."
Sarah didn't object. Her unfocused eyes stared in the direction of the window as she murmured, "The sunset outside must be stunning, covering the entire sky. It must make everything, even people's faces, look especially beautiful."
Olivia held her hand. "Mrs. Windsor, don't think about it!"
Sarah gave a bitter smile. "I'm not thinking about him! I just feel it's not worth it for myself, falling for him and ending up like this."
If Sarah had known then what she knew now, she definitely wouldn't have gone with him that evening, she thought.
Just then, there was a knock at the door of the ward.
"It must be the nurse." Olivia, holding Jacob, went to open the door. She was stunned to see Lester dressed in a nurse's uniform. Olivia panicked and hurriedly pushed him out, her voice flustered. "Mr. Mitchell, are you out of your mind? If Mr. Windsor finds out, he'll definitely kill you. You should leave now!"
Lester lowered his voice. "Let me see her, just for a few minutes."
His eyes were red, and he looked earnest.
Olivia, being soft-hearted, thought to herself that Sarah might not survive this illness. She had no family around, and Lester was probably the only one who still cared about her. Even if he just said a few words, it would be a comfort. At least there would be one more person in the world who cared about her.
Olivia sighed and let Lester in. "Mr. Mitchell, just a few minutes. Mrs. Windsor isn't doing well."
Lester nodded, grateful. He walked into the room and gently closed the door behind him. Seeing Sarah lying there, his eyes filled with tears. They had never been in love, but they understood each other.
Both of them were just pawns in a game they couldn't control.
Sarah heard the commotion and guessed it was Lester. Her heart ached. When his footsteps got closer, she reached out her hand and gave a bitter smile. "You didn't have to come."
Lester took her hand, unable to speak, tears streaming down his face.
Sarah asked softly, "Did your wife have the baby?"
Lester nodded, his throat tight with emotion. "Yeah! A girl, over 7 pounds, healthy and chubby."
Sarah smiled faintly and said that was good. She couldn't see him, so she lightly touched his sleeve with her fingers.
To Sarah, Lester represented a time that wasn't so hard to bear. After Lester got hurt, her life had turned into a nightmare.
But she never regretted it. It was a time when she felt truly alive, without lies. She only regretted dragging Lester into it.
Lester kept looking at her thin face. He could hardly recognize the Sarah he once knew, but he remembered the feelings he had for her.
Lester slowly squatted down, getting very close to her. He spoke almost in a whisper, "Hang in there, okay? Sarah, you still have your child. You're still young. Maybe you'll find new love someday! As long as you're alive, there's hope! With today's advanced medicine, you can definitely see again."
Sarah smiled faintly. The fact that he came to see her already made her very happy.
They had never been in love, but that year, neither had betrayed the other.
Lester had a daughter now. Sarah wanted to give something. Olivia, knowing her intentions, quickly searched through the luggage and finally found a valuable necklace. She tearfully said to Sarah, "This is something you brought from your own home."
Sarah took it, felt it, and slowly placed it in Lester's hand. "May she be safe and sound."
Lester held it in his hand, unable to speak through his tears.
They both had families now. She had never loved him, but he wanted to ask if, without Oliver in her life, she would have felt a spark for him.
But in the end, he didn't ask.
