Chapter 170 Can I See the Child 1
Grace moved into a city apartment.
A 2000-square-foot pad, she shared it with Clara, Taylor, and two nannies. Still had plenty of room.
Grace was still battling postpartum depression. The nannies handled Taylor at night, and during the day, when Grace felt up to it, she'd hang out with Taylor. A four or five-month-old baby was just pure cuteness.
Clara was worried about her health.
Grace said softly, "Clara, chill. If I could survive the sanatorium, I can handle anything!"
Clara clenched her teeth just thinking about it.
She said, "Henry's mom got off too easy! She should get a taste of that place and a few sedative shots every day!"
Grace gently patted Clara's hand and said softly, "It's all in the past! Don't tell Juniper; she's got a short fuse."
Clara still felt it was unfair.
Grace gave a faint smile. She was definitely wronged; she almost lost her life.
Yet, Henry made up for it in the divorce settlement!
Half a month later, Grace had put on some weight.
She insisted on seeing a psychologist, recommended by Lucas and super reliable.
That day, as Grace was about to get into the car after leaving the clinic, a familiar female voice called from behind. "Mrs. Montague! Mrs. Montague!"
Grace said softly to the driver, "Hold up a sec!"
She turned around and saw Sierra.
Sierra wasn't looking as glamorous as before. Her once youthful face now looked worn out, showing she hadn't been doing well lately.
Grace said coolly, "Don't call me Mrs. Montague anymore. I'm divorced from Henry! Call me Ms. Windsor instead. What do you want?"
Sierra wanted to step forward, but Grace's coat looked pricey, at least a few grand, and she didn't want to mess it up.
Sierra bit her lip and got to the point. "I want to ask you to plead with Mr. Montague to let Rebecca and Calvin go. They're in a bad way; their legs are broken, and can't afford medical care. They're out on the streets, begging for help."
Grace's smile faded further. She saw through Sierra's ploy. Sierra was just trying to cozy up to Henry.
She wasn't into their shady business, but she did want to see Rebecca and Calvin in their sorry state.
Sierra led Grace through a couple of streets,
Then, Grace saw Rebecca and Calvin. They were kneeling in the snow, begging.
Rebecca had lost all her former arrogance. She looked like a beaten-down woman, lying in the snow to scrape together some change.
Grace quietly watched them.
Sierra said tearfully, "Rebecca, Calvin, I begged Mrs. Montague to come see you. Apologize to her, and maybe she'll forgive you. Then you won't have to suffer like this."
Grace smiled, thinking, 'What a great act of innocence!'
At this moment, Rebecca looked up at Grace and immediately fell to the ground, crying, "Grace, I beg you! Please don't hold a grudge against us. Calvin and I will do anything for you."
Grace sneered, "You brought this on yourselves!"
Sierra got anxious. "Mrs. Montague, how can you have no sympathy at all?"
Grace adjusted her coat.
Grace still looked a bit sickly, but she appeared beautiful and classy. She gently touched her forehead and smiled. "You're preaching to me about sympathy now? Really? You always called Henry in the middle of the night, remember? Forget sympathy, you don't even have any shame, do you?"
Sierra's face turned pale.
After a while, she choked out, "There's nothing between Mr. Montague and me. Don't slander me!"
Grace didn't want to hear any of it.
She pulled out a grand in cash from her wallet and tossed it at Sierra's feet. She knew Sierra needed the money and valued her pride the most. She sneered, "You want sympathy? Here's my sympathy. If you want it, pick it up."
Sierra's face went pale. She'd never been so humiliated.
But she still slowly squatted down and picked up the money. She needed it to get through the winter; otherwise, she wouldn't have money to pay the rent.
After picking up the cash, Sierra stood up and saw Henry.
Henry was rocking a classic black and white suit, with a fine checkered coat over it, looking all mature and handsome.
He leaned against the car, watching them with those deep eyes.
Sierra felt both ashamed and excited! She thought Henry had seen Grace's true colors and would think that a mean woman like Grace wasn't worth his time. He should comfort her after seeing her humiliated.
But to Sierra's surprise, Henry ignored her and walked straight towards Grace. He gently tugged Grace's wrist, but she lightly shook him off.
Henry looked disappointed.
He said humbly, "I happened to see your driver after work and found out you were here! The divorce is finalized, so I brought it to you and wanted to see Taylor. Is it convenient for you, Grace?"
Grace thought for a moment and said, "It's convenient today."
Seeing her agree, Henry couldn't help but feel happy. He opened the door of the black Bentley and said gently, "Get in the car!"
Grace kept her distance from him, putting her hands in the pockets of her cashmere coat, and said indifferently, "I'll take my driver's car."
Henry felt disappointed again. "You won't even ride in my car now?"
Grace ignored him and walked towards her own car.
Henry watched her get in the car before turning to get into the black Bentley. Sierra stepped forward and called softly, "Mr. Montague, I..."
Henry glanced at her with cold eyes and rolled up the window.
Sierra stood there, feeling humiliated.
Half an hour later, Henry arrived at Grace's place. They went upstairs together.
Clara opened the door and was momentarily stunned to see Henry. Then she looked at Grace, silently asking.
Grace took off her coat and changed her shoes, saying indifferently, "He's here to drop something off and see the kid. Nothing else!"
Clara turned back to the kitchen to continue cooking.
Henry greeted her warmly, but she didn't respond and even closed the kitchen door.
Henry smiled bitterly.
At this moment, the nanny brought Taylor over.
Five-month-old Taylor had bright eyes and was chubby and adorable. When Taylor saw Henry, he reached out to be held, calling, "Da... Da..."
Henry's eyes grew moist as he held Taylor.
Taylor was his first kid, and he hadn't seen him for half a month. How could he not miss him?
He played with Taylor.
In the kitchen, Clara was cooking, and on the balcony, the nanny was drying Taylor's clothes. The house was warm, and Taylor only needed to wear a cotton onesie. It was a scene of domestic bliss.
But night always falls.
When it got dark, Henry had to leave because Clara didn't invite him to stay for dinner. Everyone treated him politely yet coldly, like an unwelcome guest.
Grace stood by the window, talking on the phone.
Underneath her coat, she wore a light pink wool dress. She looked very gentle and even happy.
Henry had rarely seen Grace so relaxed. He could tell that the person on the other end of the call was Dylan.
After Grace hung up, he couldn't help but ask softly, "I've never seen you this happy before! Is it because you're in a good mood, or is it the person on the other end of the call making you happy?"
