Chapter 590 Jacob, We Have No Chance Anymore 2

After One Day, Evergreen City Detention Center

Isadora was there to pick up Serafina. As she emerged from behind the high walls, Serafina stood beside a black car, her face etched with unmistakable exhaustion.

"Isadora, how's Mom?" Serafina immediately rushed forward.

Isadora gently brushed Serafina's hair, pausing before she spoke softly, "I've consulted with a lawyer. In this case, you acted in self-defense. But Mom's situation is different—excessive force and delayed self-defense."

Serafina froze, unable to process the words.

"I've hired Jade Howard, the best lawyer in the country, to fight your mother's case," Isadora's voice grew hoarse. "But Serafina, you need to prepare yourself. She's looking at four years, minimum."

Four years.

Lila wasn't young anymore. What would she be like after four years behind bars? Serafina couldn't bear to imagine it. She clutched Isadora's arm desperately. "I could serve her time instead."

Isadora shook her head gently.

The coroner's report was clear—Lila had stabbed Ronan at a vital point. This fact couldn't be changed. Their only hope was that the lawyer might reduce her sentence.

Ronan was dead. Lila was in custody. Serafina and Isadora had only each other now.

Isadora hadn't told Serafina that she'd visited Lila. Her mother had insisted on finding her own lawyer, saying she could serve extra years if necessary, but they must never ask Jacob for help.

Lila's words still echoed in her mind: "We can't owe him anything more."

She added, "Serafina never speaks when I bring up the subject of children. I know their marriage is troubled. Now that Ronan is gone and I'm facing prison anyway, what difference do a few more years make? Isadora, give Serafina a chance to choose her path again."

Isadora had tearfully agreed.

She kept this from Serafina, only saying she'd arranged for a lawyer—Jade, Evergreen City's finest, daughter of Jonah Howard and equally undefeated in court.

Serafina was somewhat relieved.

Later, her divorce from Jacob would be amicable.

Sitting in the car, she noticed Jacob's missed calls. After a moment's hesitation, she called him back, explaining that tragedy had struck her family—Ronan was dead, Lila was in custody, but they'd secured a lawyer.

Serafina's voice was eerily calm.

Sovelan, Rainforest City

Thunder crashed through the night, jolting Jacob awake as rain pounded against the windows. His phone glowed on the pillow beside him—Serafina calling. He answered immediately, listening as she delivered the shocking news.

Ronan killed by Lila. Lila facing charges.

Jacob's first instinct was to throw on clothes. "I'm coming back immediately," he told Serafina.

Despite their troubled marriage of nearly seven months, she still held a place in his heart.

"Don't be afraid. I'm here for you," he added.

In the dim light of the car, Serafina held the phone, her face expressionless, still haunted by the terror of that day. Yet Jacob's words brought unexpected comfort. She hadn't counted on him, but now found herself choking up. "I'll wait for you, then."

They ended the call.

Neither knew how fate would intervene. Just as Jacob headed for the door, a nurse rushed toward him, speaking rapidly in Sovelan. Nicole had suddenly taken a turn for the worse and was being transferred to a private hospital in Rainforest City. She needed an emergency blood transfusion.

Jacob glanced outside at the relentless downpour.

Throughout his life, Nicole had been both his greatest regret and his deepest love. In that moment, he made his choice almost without thinking, rushing to the hospital to be with the woman he'd adored since childhood.

The rain continued its mournful cadence.

Jacob forgot that Serafina was waiting. Forgot her helplessness. Forgot their fragile marriage teetering on the edge.

Nicole slipped into a brief coma.

Theron hadn't slept in three days.

The entire Windsor family maintained their vigil, especially Jacob, who sat outside the ICU, his bloodshot eyes never leaving Nicole. He couldn't imagine a world without her.

Three days later, Nicole was out of danger.

Jacob suddenly remembered Serafina—and their promise.
