Chapter 249 I Initially Wanted to Give You a Surprise!
The next day, Grace hopped on a plane to Vesper City.
Using some special connections, she tracked down Lester's place.
It was just a regular family. Lester lived with his folks in a tiny apartment, less than 800 square feet.
Lester's parents used to be high school teachers, but now they were out of work. No one in Vesper City would hire them anymore, so they started a small street vendor, selling random stuff to get by.
Lester never left the house, always staying in.
When Grace showed up, it was Lester's mom, Addison Martin, who answered the door. She looked a bit surprised. "Ma'am, you sure you got the right place?"
Grace peeked inside, spotted Lester, and said softly, "I'm here to see Lester."
Addison let her in and started to pour some water, apologizing, "We don't have much to offer. You're the first person to visit Lester in the past six months; he must be thrilled."
Lester was sitting on the couch, staring at Grace.
He didn't know her, but the Windsor family siblings had a certain look, so he kinda guessed who she was. His eyes were full of anger, but he held it back in front of Addison. "What do you want?" he asked directly.
Ivan was about to speak.
Grace signaled him to stop. She sat next to Lester, looking at his messed-up hands.
After a bit, she said softly, "Sarah asked me to come take care of you."
Lester's eyes went wide with shock. He stared at Grace for a long time before he managed to say, "How is she? Is he hurting her?"
He knew Oliver's ways all too well.
Grace thought for a moment and only told half the truth. "She's pregnant! Yeah, it's Oliver's kid. Lester, forget about her; it'll be easier for you!"
Tears streamed down Lester's face. He knew he shouldn't, but he still lost it in front of Grace. He tilted his young face slightly upward, trying to hold back his emotions as he said, "He's a monster! He doesn't deserve her."
He begged Grace to help Sarah.
Grace pulled out a card from her bag and told Lester that with the 8 million dollars on it, he could get a bigger place, hire a nurse, and give his parents a better life.
Grace said the money was from Sarah, not Oliver.
Finally, looking at Lester's desperate face, Grace gave a bitter smile. "I can't save her. Lester, I can only visit her often to make sure she's okay and not being mistreated by the staff."
As she was leaving, she thought for a moment and told him, "Lester, if Oliver didn't love her, he would agree if I asked! But, he likes Sarah; he won't let her go just because of a few words from me, especially now that they have a child."
Lester was stunned.
Grace got up to leave, and just then Addison brought water and saw Grace about to go. She couldn't help but say anxiously, "Leaving so soon?"
Grace bowed slightly at the door and said softly, "Sorry!"
Addison was stunned for a long time. After Grace left, she turned to Lester and asked, "Is this lady from your school? Why haven't I seen her before?"
Lester was silent for a long time. He looked at the card on the table and said softly, "She's Oliver's sister. Sarah asked her to come. There's 8 million dollars on this card."
Addison immediately broke down upon hearing this. She said, "I don't trust the Windsor family to be decent folks. They ruined you; why would they just hand you 8 million dollars out of the blue?"
The card indeed had 8 million dollars, and three days later, the Mitchell family moved out with the money.
Grace headed back to Evergreen City alone.
Around noon, her flight touched down at Evergreen City International Airport.
As she was going through customs, Grace unexpectedly ran into someone.
It was Henry's aunt, Riley Brown, also Aurora's sister. Riley had moved abroad years ago. Grace had only met her a few times.
But Riley recognized her and called out warmly, "Grace!"
Grace was taken aback for a moment before she remembered her and replied politely, "Riley, fancy seeing you here!"
Compared to Grace's reserved demeanor, Riley was much more enthusiastic. She chatted warmly and even invited Grace to ride in her car, offering her a lift.
Grace politely declined, "My car is right in the parking lot."
Riley looked a bit disappointed but still said warmly, "Alright, Grace, let's catch up next time."
They said their goodbyes in the parking lot.
After Riley's car drove away, Grace was about to find her car when a black sedan not far away flashed its high beams at her.
She squinted and saw Henry in the back seat.
Sawyer got out of the car and jogged over to invite her in, "Mrs. Montague, Mr. Montague has been waiting here for a long time. He wants you to come home for dinner! Taylor and Avery are also there."
Grace felt quite helpless.
'Henry, how childish can you be!' she thought to herself.
She asked Sawyer, "What about my car?"
Sawyer scratched his head, looking a bit embarrassed. "Your car was driven back a long time ago; it's at the villa!"
It seemed she had no choice.
Grace didn't dwell on it. She walked over, opened the car door, and got in.
Inside, Henry sat with a reserved demeanor.
When Grace got in, he just nodded slightly and told Sawyer, "Drive."
Sawyer cheerfully stepped on the gas.
The car drove smoothly, and it was quite silent inside. Grace leaned back in her seat, not saying a word. She was still feeling a bit sad about Sarah and Lester.
In the silence, Henry spoke, "Did you have fun in Dawnstar?"
Grace originally wanted to mock him, but she really wasn't in the mood, so she just hummed in response.
Henry turned to look at her.
There were actually tears in her eyes.
Henry unconsciously softened his voice and asked gently, "What's wrong? Why are you crying?"
Grace didn't want to talk. She pressed her cheek against the leather seat and said in a low voice, "Henry, I just need some quiet time."
Henry didn't disturb her anymore. He even pressed a button to isolate the back seat from the front. He just gently held her hand without saying anything further.
Grace was initially startled and tried to pull away, but she quickly noticed something unusual.
Henry was using his right hand. 'Could his right hand move?' she wondered.
In the dim, confined space, she quietly looked at him, her eyes glistening with tears. She didn't say anything, and neither did Henry. He just gently held her hand, enveloping it in his palm.
The car drove for an hour, and they held hands tightly for an hour.
This brief moment of intimacy ended abruptly when the car stopped.
Neil was in the villa too. He came over to open the car door and saw Henry holding Grace's hand, both of them silent.
At that moment, Neil was so awkward that he didn't know what to say!
Grace withdrew her hand and cleared her throat. "I ran into Riley at the airport!"
Riley?
Upon hearing this, Neil's expression became a bit uneasy, but he quickly covered it up and took the wheelchair to help Henry sit down.
Just then, Taylor ran over, calling "Mom" affectionately and hugging Grace. She had missed her terribly after just two or three days apart.
Grace patted her little head and then squatted down to kiss her. Taylor, being very clever, took Neil's hand and went inside first, leaving her parents behind.
The atmosphere was still a bit awkward. Grace wanted to close the car door.
Henry beat her to it, closing it with his right hand again.
Grace stared at him, her voice trembling. "Henry!"
Henry looked at her too.
He spoke softly, "I initially wanted to surprise you! But seeing you so sad now, I think it's better not to."
As Henry spoke, he slowly stood up and embraced Grace.
