Chapter 430 That Night of Banana Leaves and Night Rain, He Never Waited for Her 3
A shooting star streaked across the sky.
Under the night sky, Oliver's face showed a hint of confusion.
Nicole, nestled in his arms, clung to his arm, nibbling on his firm muscles through his shirt, and whimpered like a little kitten, "Daddy... I'm hungry."
Oliver looked down at her.
He gently touched her cheek. "Alright, sweetheart. Let's get you something to eat."
Next door was a 24-hour diner run by folks from Vesper City, known for its authentic and delicious food.
Nicole loved it, eating a whole small bowl.
She fell asleep in Oliver's arms, but her mind was still on Sarah, occasionally murmuring, "Mommy, mommy."
Oliver soothed her gently, but his gaze was fixed outside.
He had called Sarah, but her phone was off..
Her phone was off.
Oliver feared something had happened to her. In the early hours, he went to the Moore Mansion, but the servants there were tight-lipped and refused to reveal anything truthful.
At dawn, Oliver carried Nicole out of the Moore Mansion.
Nicole was very sleepy.
She lay on Oliver's shoulder, murmuring about the cold. Oliver draped his jacket over her small body and held her tightly.
Nicole was beginning to understand things.
Her vocabulary was limited, her words simple: "Mommy... doesn't... want me."
"No!"
In the night, Oliver's voice was gentle. "Mommy hasn't abandoned you, Nicole. She's just a bit busy. She'll come to see you in a few days."
He opened the car door, placed Nicole in the child seat, and kissed her.
Nicole, drowsy, clutched a small toy tightly, a gift from Sarah during her last visit. Nicole loved it and held it every night as she slept.
Now, as she drifted off, her little heart was thinking not only of Sarah but also of Jacob.
At 2:30 AM, in the small apartment, Nicole slept on her pink little bed, curled up, still clutching the toy Sarah had given her. Her delicate face glowed softly under the gentle light, looking tender and adorable.
Oliver gently touched her face.
As he stood up, he glanced at the two pink suitcases nearby, filled with Nicole's favorite clothes and toys. He had packed them, ready to return Nicole to Sarah.
But Sarah hadn't come.
He thought she must have had something come up!
She loved Nicole so much; how could she not want to see her?
At the bedroom door, a servant hired by Zoey hesitated and asked, "Mr. Windsor, would you like a midnight snack? Ms. Windsor came by this evening and brought a lot of food, including snacks the little girl loves."
Oliver sat on the small sofa.
After a while, he rasped, "No, thank you."
The servant nodded and went to sleep.
The night was deep.
He took out his wallet, the $50 million check, a symbol of his future with Sarah, carefully tucked in the compartment, not daring to let it get damaged.
He stared at it under the light for a long time, pondering the reasons Sarah hadn't shown up, considering various possibilities. But he firmly believed that when she agreed to meet, she was sincere, her attitude wavering, with a hint of wanting to reconcile.
Once emotions are involved, one tends to overthink.
Oliver stayed up all night.
Actually, Matthew also stayed up all night.
In the study of the Moore Mansion, the lights were bright.
After Sarah left, Nicholas smashed everything and then began a hunger strike.
Matthew was stone-hearted.
Isabella refused to tell the truth, and Vaughn couldn't personally plead with Matthew. In the study, Vaughn questioned his powerful father for the first time, "Dad, Sarah left without a word! Now Nicholas isn't eating or drinking. What's happening to this family? I remember you weren't this tyrannical before."
"Tyrannical?"
Matthew sat under the light, looking at his only son, his expression indescribably bitter and dark.
He got up and walked outside.
After a moment, Matthew's deep voice came into the study, "Vaughn, you think I'm tyrannical? Then come with me and see what your precious son has become! Hear the shocking things he's said!"
Vaughn was horrified.
He remembered Isabella crying all day, the doctors coming and going, not just nutritionists but also Evergreen City's top psychologists, all surrounding Nicholas, while he, the father, couldn't see him.
Matthew pushed open the bedroom door.
Nicholas lay on the bed, significantly thinner, surrounded by busy doctors.
Matthew dismissed the doctors.
In the large bedroom, only the three Moore men remained. Matthew slowly walked to the bed, looking at Nicholas's young, expressionless face, and said, "Yes, she has gone abroad! Until you settle down and have children, she won't have a chance to return! Nicholas, I know you think I'm heartless, your mother thinks so too, but ask yourself... who caused this outcome?"
"It was you! It was you, Nicholas."
"Ordinary families wouldn't tolerate such rebellious behavior, let alone the Moore family? You openly express your feelings without restraint. If someone with ill intentions hears it, it would undoubtedly give our enemies leverage... I won't allow such a foolish grandson!"
His words were vague, but Vaughn had guessed most of it.
He was horrified, "Nicholas, you!"
Nicholas looked up at the light above, his voice devoid of life, "If I don't settle down and have children, she can never come back... is that true?"
Matthew was resolute, "Yes!"
Tears slid from Nicholas's eyes.
He said softly, "Grandpa, she's not only your biological daughter, she saved me! Are you really not leaving her any room? She did nothing wrong."
Matthew didn't answer.
He understood human nature well; he knew Nicholas couldn't hold out.
Sure enough, after a while, Nicholas said softly, "I will go on dates! Once I recover, I will go on dates! Grandpa, don't worry, I will marry a suitable, well-educated girl. I will treat her well, grow old with her. We will be a couple everyone envies. I won't let the Moore family have any blemish."
"Good! It's good that you understand."
Matthew was expressionless.
Nicholas turned to Matthew, "After I get married, let her come back."
Matthew agreed.
But Nicholas didn't expect.
A year after he got married, Sarah didn't return.
Two years later, he and his wife had a child. Matthew was overjoyed, and the Moore family held a grand banquet, but amidst the bustling crowd, she was still absent.
After going abroad, Sarah rarely contacted her family. Even when she did, it was only a few words to his mother.
Every winter, she sent a postcard.
To let them know she was safe.
The postcards were always addressed to Matthew.
Nicholas accidentally saw one once; it had no address, and the salutation to Matthew was not "Dad" but "Mr. Moore."
"Mr. Moore, wishing you well."
Simple, ordinary.
But Matthew stared at it day and night, feeling each word cut deep.
He privately told Aaron, "This child is blaming me, hating me!"
He had tried to contact her.
But after Sarah went abroad, she changed her number and didn't reveal her whereabouts. It was as if she had vanished from the Moore family, as if she had never been there.
Occasionally, Matthew couldn't help but wonder if he had made a mistake!
