Chapter 346 He Gave the Opportunity to Ellie
Sarah leaned back against the headboard, lost in thought.
The window was slightly ajar, and a chilly breeze slipped in, making her already weak body shiver even more.
She overheard that Oliver was planning to send the cornea donor meant for her to Windcrest because Ellie was also sick.
Ellie needed a heart.
Stephen mentioned she might go blind, but Oliver was still set on his decision.
How absurd. After everything, he still claimed he loved her, still talked about starting over, still promised they'd be happy.
Sarah's face remained expressionless. She actually knew Fronce's language.
Oliver never dug into her past. She had spent a year learning Fronce's language when she was 18, so it came easily to her.
Sarah couldn't help but think, if she didn't know Fronce's language, she would've never realized how much Oliver loved Ellie. But she kept it to herself because it wouldn't change anything.
That night, Ellie was supposed to have her surgery. Oliver hadn't slept; he was by the window, constantly on the phone.
Sarah figured he must be worried about Ellie. They were deeply in love. If Oliver wasn't trying to get back at her, he and Ellie would make a great couple. How ironic.
Sarah didn't care anymore, but the sound of his phone calls kept her awake. She propped herself up and tried to sit up. She looked towards the window, her voice barely a whisper, lost in the night, "Actually, my condition is pretty stable now. You don't have to stay with me all the time."
Oliver hung up the phone. He turned to look at Sarah. She was much better than before, her frail body had filled out a bit, her face no longer pale, even with a touch of color.
Oliver was about to speak when Olivia brought Jacob over, cheerfully saying, "Jacob just had a bath, he's all warm, and he insisted on coming to sleep with Mrs. Windsor."
Olivia placed Jacob in the bed.
Jacob snuggled up to Sarah, softly saying, "Mommy, kiss."
Sarah adored Jacob. Though she couldn't see, she reached out to find him and gently kissed him. Jacob hugged Sarah, a bit shy, burying his little head in her arms.
Sarah stroked the back of his neck. They embraced, and the moment was filled with warmth.
Oliver stood by the window, quietly watching. His heart softened, but his words were harsh. He said to Sarah, "Jacob is a boy. He needs to inherit the family business in the future. He can't be spoiled like this."
Jacob was still very young, very innocent.
Sarah gently patted Jacob, her voice soft, "To you, he is the heir to the family, a boy who needs to be strong. But to me, he is just my little boy. He is so young, he doesn't need to be strong or understand so much."
She gave a wry smile, "Being like you isn't necessarily a good thing."
Oliver was a bit miffed.
Olivia, always quick on the uptake, found an excuse and slipped out of the room.
Oliver was about to blow up but then saw Sarah's fingers fumbling to touch Jacob. Even though she couldn't see, her gaze on him was so tender.
A wave of emotion hit Oliver. He felt a pang of guilt towards Sarah. If it weren't for Ellie needing that heart, Sarah could've had the cornea transplant during her liver surgery, and she'd be seeing again by now.
Feeling guilty, Oliver's temper cooled. He walked over slowly, his footsteps startling Sarah. She looked up, a hint of unease in her eyes. Oliver reached out, gently covering her head, then lay down beside Jacob.
Oliver warmed her under the covers.
He also held Jacob, his tone unusually gentle. He started talking to Sarah about their future, "Once your surgery is a success, we'll go skiing every year. Jacob will love it! You can pick where to live, and I can find a senior partner for the company or work remotely. Sarah, where do you want to go? Just tell me."
Oliver went on and on, but Sarah stayed silent.
She couldn't help but smirk to herself, thinking, 'You're worried about Ellie and talking to me about some fantasy future. Oliver, do you really think you can juggle all this?'
Oliver didn't get a response from Sarah. Just then, his phone rang in his pocket. He was mindful of her, but after a moment, he answered the call while still lying in bed, "Hello, this is Oliver."
The call was from the hospital in Windcrest.
The person on the other end spoke briefly but cheerfully, saying Ellie's surgery was a success.
Oliver sighed in relief.
He didn't want Sarah to know, so he sat up and kept his voice calm, "Got it," then hung up.
He was in a good mood, and Sarah's indifference didn't bother him.
He looked at Sarah and Jacob, his heart softening, and leaned in to kiss Sarah.
When he got close, Sarah sensed it and subtly moved her face away, dodging his touch.
Oliver knew she was resisting. He thought she just needed time to come around.
He didn't push it, but he felt a bit let down.
Three days later, Sarah had her surgery, and Oliver's liver was transplanted into her body.
The surgery went really well.
A week later, Sarah could even get out of bed and walk a few steps, but without a suitable cornea, she still couldn't see. Oliver, being strong, bounced back quickly despite having a chunk of his liver removed.
They thought that was the end of the story. They expected to carry on as a resentful couple, like so many others, staying together for the kid and because he had leverage over her. But things didn’t turn out that way.
Ellie had an accident.
