Chapter 417 Oliver Undertakes a Momentous Task
Sarah turned her head.
In the soft moonlight, tears still glistened at the corners of her eyes. She saw Isabella.
Isabella draped the shawl she was holding over Sarah's shoulders and then looked at the small cake, asking softly, "Did he send this?"
Sarah didn't deny it, just nodded lightly.
Isabella sighed softly.
An elder sister-in-law is like a mother.
She sat beside Sarah, gently wrapping an arm around her shoulders, and said softly, "I heard from Vaughn that things aren't going well between you and Jeremy. I knew you hadn't let go of the past yet! Sarah, when we're young, we tend to love someone so passionately, letting our emotions sway with every moment. But as we mature, we realize what we truly want is just a peaceful and stable relationship."
Sarah stared blankly. "Isabella, did you ever love someone passionately?"
"Of course."
"My marriage with Vaughn was arranged! But it's been very happy and fulfilling."
Isabella brushed aside the hair on Sarah's forehead and said seriously, "Sarah, forget about that hurtful past! Only then can you be happy."
Sarah whispered, "Okay."
But how could she easily let go of the love and hate from the past?
That night, after her bath, she made a point to call Jeremy, thanking him for the dinner and the gift. She invited him to dinner over the weekend.
Jeremy gladly accepted.
After hanging up, Sarah put on a casual outfit over her bathrobe, thinking it was indeed time to say goodbye to the past.
Love must be let go, and so must hate!
As she was thinking, there was a commotion outside, along with the sound of dogs barking and Claire's exaggerated voice: "Oh my! Mr. Windsor would never come through here. He's too proud for that!"
Sarah wrapped herself in her clothes and ran downstairs.
In a corner of the yard.
It was late at night, and a mason was blocking a small side door, usually used by the golden retriever.
For a moment, Sarah was speechless.
Vaughn was personally supervising.
Isabella told him to go back to bed, but he refused, insisting on watching the dog door being sealed shut.
Vaughn saw Sarah and frowned. "It's chilly at night. Why did you come out?"
Sarah said softly, "He probably won't come again."
Tonight, she kissed Jeremy, and he must have seen it. With his pride, he wouldn't show up again, let alone sneak into her bedroom to cause trouble.
Sarah's guess was correct.
From that night, Oliver seemed to disappear from Evergreen City.
For a long time, he didn't show up, nor did he come to see Jacob.
He went alone to Harmony City to find Terry.
Last time, after his confrontation with Matthew, Terry had retreated, but later, Terry schemed behind his back, stealing Windsor Group's biggest partner and handing it over to someone else, making a huge profit.
Oliver came to settle the score.
He visited multiple times, but Terry avoided him.
Layla also hid from him.
Oliver wasn't in a hurry.
He checked into a $300-a-night budget hotel, staying in his room day and night, smoking or reading financial reports. He occasionally traded stocks with the remaining money, making some small profits.
Every day, he would ask the front desk for a name.
Juan Stewart.
This was the man Layla was keeping, the star of the video, who had recently stopped contacting Oliver, but Oliver had him figured out.
Juan was secretly seeing a young woman.
He would come to the hotel two or three times a week.
Oliver waited in the hotel for three days, finally catching Juan.
The two really took every second count.
As soon as the man and woman entered the room, they started undressing, their hormones flaring against the door. Juan had a little fetish, liking to curse during the act, especially mixing in Layla's name.
After they finished, he let the woman leave first.
He even gave her $5000.
The young woman left quickly, and Juan took a refreshing shower, planning to rest a bit before dealing with Layla that night.
As he walked into the bedroom, he froze.
Oliver was leaning against the headboard, his face dark, playing with a USB drive.
Juan was scared out of his wits!
He stammered, "Mr. Windsor, what are you doing here?"
Oliver smiled coldly, "Juan, you really forget your place once you climb up. Did you forget how you got into Layla's bed in the first place? I'm here to remind you, if Terry finds out about your antics, he'll chop you up and feed you to the fish."
Juan broke out in a cold sweat.
Oliver tossed the USB drive over. "This is footage of you fooling around with that woman. If Layla finds out, she won't spare you either."
Juan hesitated for a moment, then said, "Mr. Windsor, I can't help you anymore! You know Layla's temper."
"Really?"
Oliver got up from the bed, moving like a panther. He grabbed Juan by the collar and slammed him against the opposite wall. Juan's head started bleeding.
Oliver grabbed his hair, pressing his face against the wall. "Did you forget how you begged me for a chance? Now that you've used me, you don't want to acknowledge it?"
Juan kicked his legs, but it was futile. Oliver's violence was terrifying. He believed that if he didn't say something, Oliver would kill him on the spot. His face was distorted, and he struggled to say, "Tomorrow night at 8, Layla will be at Celestial Peak Club playing cards."
Oliver threw him aside. The USB drive landed on him. Juan lay on the ground, feeling like he was less than a dog in front of Oliver, both in the past and now.
The next night, Layla won some money playing cards and was in a good mood. She planned to find Juan for some fun. But she was starting to find Juan less appealing.
Layla got into her black car. The driver was her confidant, who knew about Juan. She said in her soft accent, "To the usual place."
But the driver didn't respond for a long time. Layla sensed something was wrong. She looked ahead and saw a tall figure in the driver's seat, slowly smoking.
She wanted to scream, but the door locked from the inside. Layla's face was full of fear. "What do you want?"
Oliver continued to smoke slowly. He said quietly, "When I came from Evergreen City, I told myself to leave some room for negotiation, but Terry and Layla clearly don't want to give me that chance! So, I have to use my own methods."
Layla pounded on the window. But the car was bulletproof; it was useless.
Oliver smiled faintly. "Just now, I sent your video with Juan to a media company. I'm sure they've already uploaded it online..."
He checked his watch. "It's been five minutes; it should be trending by now!"
Layla's face turned pale. She started to plead, "Mr. Windsor, for the sake of our past! You can issue a statement saying the video is fake and that the woman in it isn't me."
"Too late!"
Oliver leaned back, smoking, his voice indifferent. "Fortunately, my dealings with Layla have always been legitimate business, able to withstand scrutiny. Otherwise, I'd have to go to jail with Terry and Layla."
Layla's face was bloodless. She said sharply, "Oliver, why do you have to be so ruthless! If you want money, I can give it to you."
Oliver turned to look at her. He said softly, "Do you think I'm a beggar?"
"Now, you can't go anywhere! But you can go online and make calls, watching your husband's career crumble because of you, and there's nothing you can do about it!"
Layla slumped in her seat. At that moment, Terry called, and as soon as Layla answered, she heard him curse, "Bitch!"
Layla burst into tears.
The Perez family fell. Terry was taken away for investigation. Oliver got out of the car, not taking a penny from the Perez family. He vented his anger and removed a major threat for Matthew.
Terry's downfall was widely discussed. The Moore family figured it was Oliver's doing.
In the study, Matthew looked at the documents, feeling uneasy. After a while, he spoke to Vaughn on the couch, "Oliver held back last time! With his methods, if he really wanted to uncover every stone, he could find something on me too!"
Vaughn felt a chill down his spine. He couldn't help but say, "He's indeed smart and capable! But his methods are too ruthless, leaving no room for negotiation."
Matthew nodded. He looked at the bright moon, saying softly, "His marriage with Sarah ended, and now it seems more like a slow suicide. If he hadn't done so many wrongs in the past, I'd almost feel sorry for him! Vaughn, as I said before, it's a pity."
He didn't let Vaughn tell Sarah, afraid she'd be sad. But Sarah saw the news about Terry and Layla; how could she not guess?
Only, Oliver never came back. After causing such a stir, he went north for a small project. When he returned to Evergreen City, it was close to the New Year.
On New Year's Eve, he came to see Jacob and brought new clothes for the kids. Claire hadn't seen him in six months. Though she usually criticized him, at this moment, seeing him, Claire couldn't help but cry, "You've gotten so dark and thin! Jacob might not even recognize his dad!"
