Chapter 436 Jealous and Angry? 2
Sarah gave a faint smile.
"You're right. No one has to wait for anyone, Oliver. I'm not upset or jealous. I should congratulate you! Your girlfriend is young and beautiful."
Under the light, Oliver's face was expressionless. "Thanks."
It seemed like their conversation was heading towards an unhappy ending. Sarah felt it was inappropriate to stay any longer, even though this used to be her home. But now that Oliver had a new girlfriend, she shouldn't intrude.
Oliver didn't stop her.
In the living room, Nicole was sitting at a small desk, tears streaming down her face as she continued her homework.
Sarah walked over.
Nicole immediately stood up, clutching Sarah's clothes, looking both dejected and a bit spoiled. "I'm so dumb."
She liked Sarah.
She wanted Sarah to visit her often, but she was afraid that if she were too dumb, Sarah wouldn't like her. Nicole's face was full of anxiety.
How could Sarah not like her?
She pulled Nicole into a hug. After holding her for a long time, she said to Oliver, "I want to take her home for a few days, is that okay?"
Nicole's ears perked up.
She started talking about Jacob.
Sarah continued, "She hasn't seen Jacob in a long time. I'll take her home and bring her back in a week."
She was humbly asking.
But Oliver was cold-hearted. "If she wants to see him, bring Jacob over. He can help her with her homework, too."
Sarah wanted to say more, but he had already grabbed his car keys and jacket. "I'll drive you."
Sarah wanted to refuse, but it was clear Oliver wouldn't take no for an answer. He walked out first.
"Mom!"
Nicole called out pitifully, like a little kitten. She wanted to go home with Sarah, and she missed Jacob.
Sarah didn't want to leave her either.
But there was no choice.
She hugged Nicole and softly said, "Mom will come back next time."
As she left, Nicole ran a few steps after her. When Sarah turned around, Nicole stopped, her clear eyes staring at Sarah, still murmuring, "I'm so dumb."
Sarah's lips trembled.
She held back for a long time, but couldn't help it. She went back and hugged Nicole tightly.
"Nicole is not dumb."
"Our Nicole is the smartest."
Nicole lay on her shoulder, her little hands holding on tightly, not wanting to let go. Sarah comforted her for a long time. Finally, Claire came over and took Nicole away. As they walked upstairs, Nicole, lying on Claire's shoulder, said again, "I'm so dumb."
Oliver drove a black Cullinan.
The night was deep. He leaned against the window, smoking a cigarette, his arm stretched out of the car window, the cigarette rising and falling between his long fingers.
The light smoke was blown away by the night wind.
Sarah walked over quickly, tears in her eyes.
Oliver glanced at her, slowly extinguished the cigarette, and leaned over to open the passenger door for her. After Sarah got in, he looked at her and asked, "Have you been crying?"
"No!"
Sarah turned her face away.
Oliver reached out and gently brushed her cheek, feeling the dampness.
He asked, "What's this then?"
Sarah turned to look at him. "You don't care if she's smart or not. You have a new girlfriend now, and you'll have other kids in the future. Why not let me take her? At least I'll take good care of her and teach her properly. She won't keep saying she's dumb! Oliver, why not let me have her?"
He gripped the steering wheel, looking straight ahead.
After a while, he softly asked, "Weren't you the one who left her behind? How do you know I don't care about her or take good care of her?"
The car was silent for a long time.
Sarah tilted her head back, suppressing her emotions. "There's no point in talking about this. Just drive."
They always argued, just like before.
Now, they were no longer married. They shouldn't have to argue anymore.
But Nicole was still a point of contention.
After driving for about ten minutes, Sarah spoke softly, "If you get married, I hope to take care of her. Oliver, I'm begging you."
At the next intersection, the light turned red.
Oliver stopped the car and replied in a flat tone, "If I get married, my wife will take care of her. What, are you afraid my wife will mistreat her?"
He turned to look at her.
Sarah didn't ask any more questions.
She leaned her face against the seat, a few strands of hair falling onto his arm. Oliver could feel the tickling sensation even through the fabric of his shirt.
Oliver couldn't help but look down.
Twenty minutes later, he parked the car outside her building. He didn't go upstairs, suggesting they have dinner together on Sunday.
Sarah didn't immediately agree.
Oliver's lips curved slightly. "Don't worry, it's a family gathering. I won't bring anyone else."
He added, "I hope you won't bring anyone either."
Sarah opened the car door and got out.
Back in her apartment, she leaned against the door, her legs weak.
She thought of Nicole and her saying "I'm so dumb." She thought of Electra. She hadn't expected Oliver and Electra to be living together. How did Electra treat Nicole?
She had too many worries but couldn't voice them.
Oliver only needed to say, "You were the one who abandoned her," and she could not argue anymore.
But she didn't want to give up.
She thought she needed to talk to him.
Oliver drove back to the villa.
When he arrived, Claire was standing outside, looking grim.
Over the years, Claire's position in the household had become more prominent. She immediately scolded Oliver. "I've been waiting for this moment, and you finally brought her back. Look at your attitude!"
"What's wrong with my attitude?"
Oliver opened the car door but didn't get out.
He leaned back in the seat, smoking.
Claire snapped at him, "Smoking will kill you!"
She continued, "She came here nicely. You could have invited her to stay for dinner, spoken kindly, and maybe she wouldn't have left. Tonight, you could have had what you wanted. Now, she misunderstands your relationship with Ms. Ross."
Oliver's long fingers held the cigarette, exhaling thin smoke.
He didn't argue, just said, "She's cold-hearted. Do you think if I begged, she would stay? She has a man now."
Claire asked bluntly, "Did you see it? Caught them in bed?"
Oliver felt a headache coming on.
He got out of the car and walked towards the entrance, Claire still grumbling behind him.
In the living room, Electra was sitting on the couch, playing with her nails.
Oliver didn't even look at her, heading straight to his study. He still had work to do.
Electra followed him in.
She spoke in a high-pitched voice, "Oliver."
Oliver told her to get out.
Electra wasn't happy. She huffed, "You called me 'darling' just now, and now you're telling me to get out! Oliver, you haven't paid me this month's salary yet!"
Oliver stared at her for a few seconds, then opened a drawer, took out $20,000, and threw it at her.
"Take it and get out!"
Electra counted the money, calling him stingy and threatening to complain to Grace.
Oliver sneered, "With your lazy attitude, if you were with Grace, she'd treat you worse! I'm giving you $20,000 and not kicking you out. That's generous enough!"
Electra didn't back down. "You're always mean to me! As for the way you acted in front of Sarah just now, I wanted to hold up a mirror for you. Oliver, you looked so desperate, your face showing all your unmet needs."
Oliver snorted. "Impossible! We're over!"
Electra didn't believe him.
She mocked him, "You're clearly still craving her, yet you say you're over... You're hilarious!"
Oliver threw something at her, telling her to get out.
Electra left.
Oliver sat there, stewing in his anger.
After a while, he went to the bathroom to look in the mirror.
Did he really look that desperate?
