Chapter 238 The Perfect Substitute
"We'll start with the 2,000 units I have here," ScribeCharm said, he was now completely at ease.
"Alright," Eric replied with a slight smile and a nod.
ScribeCharm smiled and opened the trade window to begin the transaction.
With a contract in place, even if RogueVortex discovered the secret, he wouldn't dare break the agreement. Five thousand gold or fifty million credits, with gold being the preferred payment method—RogueVortex wouldn't dare back out. He would have to grit his teeth and buy 50,000 units of sturdy stones at fifty copper per unit.
If paid in full, that would be 250 gold. Of that, 48,000 units were resold from NPCs, netting a profit of 48 gold. Adding the 10 gold from the 2,000 units, the total would be 58 gold, which would be enough to buy quite a few good items at the auction and increase the guild's liquidity.
ScribeCharm was so excited he almost shouted.
"Awesome!"
But he held back, knowing he had to maintain appearances.
With this much liquidity, Echoes of Dusk could develop faster and better. With such contributions, he wondered how the guild leader would reward him.
Eric was also pleased. Seeing so many forging materials cost only 10 gold coins was incredibly satisfying.
Once he returned to Silvervale City and resold them, just the 2,000 units of sturdy stones could fetch 200 gold. If he turned them into Whetstone of Precision, that would be 800 gold. If he made them into Advanced Whetstone of Precision, that would be 2,000 gold.
Although it wasn't possible to convert 100% of materials into regular and advanced Whetstone of Precision, making a profit of 1,000 gold after costs was no problem.
And that was just 2,000 units. If it were 50,000 units, the 30,000 gold task would be quickly resolved.
"RogueVortex, please wait a moment. I'll go get some more," ScribeCharm said, satisfied with the money he had received. He could now use it to buy more sturdy stones.
"Alright, see you at the bank," Eric said, smiling at ScribeCharm's satisfied expression.
The bank in Shadowwing Citadel couldn't withdraw items from personal banks, but it could store them. Eric's backpack was full, and it would be inconvenient to buy things at the Shadowwing Citadel auction later, so he planned to store some items first.
As for the subsequent forging materials, Eric had no expectations because he already knew the outcome.
He wondered what expression ScribeCharm would have when he found out the NPC selling forging materials was gone and wouldn't be selling them in the future.
ScribeCharm quickly ran over.
"Where is he?" ScribeCharm looked around the empty alley, seeing only a few players and no sign of the NPC.
"Are you looking for the NPC selling forging materials? You're too late. The NPC's materials sold out long ago. I heard there won't be more until tomorrow."
"You guys are naive. There's no way such good materials would be sold every day. I think it was a triggered event, just one-time thing. There won't be more in the future. Otherwise, selling so many units of sturdy stones daily would break the balance. The main System wouldn't make such a mistake."
Two helpful players started discussing the situation.
"How could this happen?" ScribeCharm's face turned ashen upon hearing their words. "Oh my God, what have I done?"
Whether the sales were limited daily or future sales were absent, it didn't matter to ScribeCharm. He couldn't gather the remaining 48,000 units of sturdy stones in ten days.
If he couldn't gather them, he would be in breach of the contract and have to pay 5,000 gold or fifty million credits. This heavy price instantly plunged ScribeCharm from heaven into the most terrifying, endless hellfire.
If he had known this would happen, he would never have sold those materials so cheaply. In the end, he only got 10 gold coins and foolishly signed a contract for 50,000 units with RogueVortex. What was he to do?
"No, I must go find RogueVortex immediately and find a way to void this contract," ScribeCharm, a seasoned player in the market, knew what he had to do. He quickly headed to the Shadowwing Citadel bank.
If it were just the loss of these forging materials, Echoes of Dusk could still bear it and it wouldn't affect the guild's development. After all, they had gained 10 gold coins. But the remaining 48,000 units of sturdy stones could spell doom for Echoes of Dusk. If it doomed Echoes of Dusk, the guild leader would certainly come after him.
At this moment, Eric had just stored all the materials in the bank when he saw ScribeCharm running over in a panic. Although ScribeCharm tried to appear calm, the immense pressure and fear made it impossible.
"ScribeCharm, you're really quick. Transporting all those stones must be tiring. How many did you bring this time?" Eric teased leisurely.
"RogueVortex, I need to discuss something with you," ScribeCharm said, his confidence gone and his tone now respectful. He had no choice since his life was in Eric's hands.
"We're partners now. Just say whatever you need to," Eric nodded.
"RogueVortex is right. We're partners, so we should consider each other. Taking out 50,000 units of sturdy stones at once is a lot. I don't think RogueVortex can come up with that much gold at once, even in ten days. So, after careful consideration, we've decided to modify the contract to make the terms more flexible. What do you think?" ScribeCharm explained slowly, making a lot of sense.
Had Eric not known that ScribeCharm wanted to break the contract, he might have been moved to tears.
'Truly a seasoned player; he lies without batting an eye, pretending it's for my benefit,' Eric thought with a cold smile. Unfortunately, such words couldn't sway him, especially since he already knew ScribeCharm's true intentions.
"Thank you for your concern, ScribeCharm. But don't worry, once I resell these materials, the gold will come back quickly. I'll definitely be able to pay within ten days, so there's no need to modify the contract," Eric smiled slightly. "Let's hurry up with the transaction; the auction is about to start."
ScribeCharm then gave over a dozen reasons to modify the contract, such as increasing the purchase volume or lowering the price, but Eric rejected them all. This nearly drove ScribeCharm mad, but he couldn't reveal the truth, almost spitting blood in frustration.
"ScribeCharm, there's no need to waste your breath trying to change the contract. I won't change it. Getting 50,000 units of sturdy stones at fifty copper each is a rare opportunity. Even if I turned to the NPC, I wouldn't be able to buy that many. There might not be any for sale in the future."
"You knew!"
"Of course, who wouldn't know about such a big deal? Are you okay? Trying to buy sturdy stones from the NPC and resell them to me for a big profit, you thought you had it all figured out. I suspected that NPC wasn't reliable, which is why I agreed to your deal. Seeing you so panicked confirms it. I'm really looking forward to the remaining 48,000 units of sturdy stones."
"You tricked me!"
"I represent Echoes of Dusk. Aren't you afraid of pissing off Echoes of Dusk? With your third-rate guild, Darkstar Guild, we could wipe you out in no time."
"An elite guild like Echoes of Dusk, I'm so scared. But unfortunately, you're far away in the Storm Empire, and Eldoria is too far. No matter how powerful you are, what can you do to me? What can you do to the Darkstar Guild? If you have the guts, come to Eldoria. I'll wipe out Echoes of Dusk and remove you from Divine Realms: Legends. But you should think about the compensation first, hahaha."
After saying this, Eric laughed and left the Shadowwing Citadel bank, leaving ScribeCharm slumped on the ground, dazed.
He couldn't accept the fact that he had been tricked.
But more than being tricked, ScribeCharm felt a deep sense of humiliation. From start to finish, he felt like Eric had been toying with him, while he had been as happy as a monkey. The thought was mortifying.
After a long while, ScribeCharm finally shouted in anger, "RogueVortex, just you wait. The power of Echoes of Dusk far exceeds your imagination. We will definitely destroy Darkstar Guild."
