Chapter 320 Personal Guard
Eric found it hard to imagine how much determination it took for Kyle, now so down and out, to make such a decision back when he was the free player known as DrunkDawn. However, it proved that DrunkDawn had a keen eye.
When it comes to choosing personal guards, it relies on both vision and luck.
If you make a poor choice, you can only blame yourself for not having sharp enough eyes or enough patience.
Before players recruit NPCs under their command, they absolutely cannot see any of the NPCs' stats, even if they are recruited as ordinary guards.
Anna, for example, was given as an assistant through an Epic Level quest and is completely under Eric's management, similar to a personal guard, which is why Eric can see her stats.
Players only get two personal guard slots and 48 ordinary guard slots after becoming a Viscount. These slots are very precious, and once a contract is signed with an NPC, breaking it comes at a significant cost.
If it's an ordinary guard, players can bear it since ordinary guards cannot grow and will eventually need to be replaced as the player's strength increases. But personal guards are different; they can grow. Even Eric wouldn't dare to break a contract lightly because the cost is too high.
Therefore, players in Divine Realms: Legends are very cautious when choosing personal guards after becoming a Viscount. They won't use the slots lightly and will choose carefully.
However, keeping the slots unused isn't good either. Even if others recruit personal guards with less potential, they start training them earlier, which significantly helps with player leveling. The earlier a personal guard is trained, the better it is for their growth.
Recruiting personal guards isn't as simple as wanting to recruit someone. NPCs from major kingdoms, empires, and the strongest factions in Divine Realms: Legends cannot be recruited. In other words, the NPCs recruited cannot belong to any faction. Additionally, the stronger and higher-ranked the NPC, the harder it is to recruit them.
Thinking you can recruit a level 200, tier 5 NPC right away is a dream!
DrunkDawn's ability to directly choose the commoner Kyle was definitely a combination of vision and luck, something ordinary people couldn't replicate.
However, Eric was determined to get this NPC, Kyle.
"Mr. Franklin, I am a newly promoted Viscount in Silvervale City and would like to recruit some guards. Are you interested?" Eric asked.
Kyle's expression became somewhat excited upon hearing this, but he looked at his arm and sighed, "Viscount, as you can see, I am but a cripple and cannot fulfill the role of your guard."
"I understand your concerns. I heard that you were a tier 2 Sword Master at a young age and were severely injured by a tier 3 demon in the Great Demon War, losing an arm in the process. I came prepared to ask you to be my guard. Look at this," Eric said with a smile, taking out a small crystal bottle.
The crystal bottle contained a drop of deep blue liquid, and just by looking through the crystal, one could feel the immense life energy within it.
"Water for Life!"
Kyle immediately recognized the contents of the crystal bottle. His stern and resolute face showed a hint of emotion because this was something he had always sought. Now that it was in front of him, how could he not recognize it?
"That's right. If you agree to become my personal guard, this bottle of Water for Life is yours," Eric said with a smile.
"Honorable Viscount, are you really willing to use such a precious Water for Life on a Sword Master like me?" Kyle was tempted but still asked calmly, "You must know that even a tier 3 professional would agree without hesitation for just this drop of Water for Life."
Rosewater was shocked to hear Kyle say this.
She hadn't realized how precious Water for Life was.
A single drop of Water for Life could recruit a tier 3 professional NPC as a guard.
A tier 3 professional! Even tier 2 professionals were highly sought after by many players, let alone tier 3.
If the Guild of Aether Wing had a tier 3 professional guard, who would dare provoke Aether Wing?
Whoever dared would be wiped out in no time.
Although Rosewater had good intentions, Eric could indeed use Water for Life to recruit a tier 3 professional, but Eric was too weak now. Even if he wanted to recruit one, he couldn't.
"Mr. Franklin, I understand what you're saying, but I value your potential more. With your unwavering will, you haven't fallen and become a Demonkin. I believe you will one day become a top-tier professional on the continent," Eric affirmed.
Eric had evidence to back up his claim.
Demons are not to be trifled with. He had only seen the phantom of a tier 4 demon and was afflicted with Dreaded Affliction. If it weren't for Tier 3 High Priestess Sharon helping him remove the affliction, he would have had to start over.
Moreover, Kyle had fought a real tier 3 demon. How could he not have been afflicted by the demon's power?
Demon power is the most evil force, easily corrupting human minds. But Kyle, having lived so many years and lost his power, was still normal and hadn't become a Demonkin. Without an absolutely unwavering will, how could he not be consumed by demon power?
"Mr. Franklin, would you be willing to become my guard?" Eric asked seriously.
"Viscount, if you don't mind me being a cripple, how can I refuse your kindness? From today on, you are my only master, and Kyle will serve you loyally," Kyle said, kneeling before Eric and respectfully accepting the Water for Life.
System: Do you want Kyle Franklin to become your personal guard?
Eric clicked agree, and Kyle's stats appeared in Eric's NPC management interface.
Kyle, personal guard of Kai Blackthorn, male, age 39, loyalty 90, charm 60, constitution 40, wisdom 81, level 30, profession tier 1 Swordsman.
Growth potential: 26.
Strength 125, agility 130, endurance 200, spirit 180, intelligence 90.
Health 8000, attack power 600-720, defense 3100.
Although Eric was mentally prepared, seeing these stats made his heart ache. Not to mention other attributes, the growth potential of only 26 was shockingly low.
He couldn't imagine how DrunkDawn had endured it.
A growth potential of 0-30 points is considered average, and players generally avoid this category.
A growth potential of 31-50 points is considered Bronze Level, and players with personal guards usually have at least this level.
A growth potential of 51-70 points is considered Dark Iron Level, which is rare and usually requires keen vision and long-term observation to find.
A growth potential of 71-80 points is considered Mithril Level, extremely rare, and highly valued.
A growth potential of 81-90 points is considered Adamantite Level, extremely rare in Divine Realms: Legends.
A growth potential of 91-100 points is considered Obsidian Level. With such a guard, the player's own strength becomes less important.
As for the Epic Level above Obsidian Level, Eric had never seen one and didn't know what it could achieve. Epic Level signifies transcendence, beyond the realm of mortals, almost god-like.
