Chapter 54 The Book of Darkness

Isabella ended the call, and Eric breathed a sigh of relief, glad that she didn't find out.

If Isabella knew he was the one who forged the Guardian Plate, something terrible would likely happen. Without a doubt, Eric knew that Isabella would resort to forceful tactics.

The title "Ice Goddess" wasn't just for show. Isabella's terrible methods made countless experts shudder; otherwise, she wouldn't be able to manage so many top players. However, he learned something interesting from Isabella.

The various guilds in Silvervale City were already paying a lot of attention to the Guardian Plate, indicating its fame had spread. The Guardian Plate's popularity had probably reached its peak, making it the perfect time to sell a large number of Guardian Plates for a considerable profit and accumulate significant capital. After some time, the Guardian Plate wouldn't be as valuable.

"Let me first check out this epic quest; then, I'll go back to forge the Guardian Plate." Seeing the opportunity to make a fortune, Eric was eager to rush back and start making Guardian Plates. However, the epic quest at hand was more critical; quitting halfway would be a lifelong regret.

Ephemeral Vanquisher's legendary achievements were closely tied to this epic quest, so Eric naturally wouldn't miss this opportunity.

Walking along the winding alleys of the slums, it took him twenty minutes to reach the library.

Along the way, Eric found it helpful to have a Divine Officiant by his side. When the NPCs saw Sharon's attire, they immediately backed off from their plan to rob him.Otherwise, this route would have taken over an hour, with constant battles against these gutter rats. Killing these NPCs wouldn't yield any rewards, not even experience points; they were dirt poor. Willowbrook Town's library was in a sorry state; it was just a two-story building with no one managing it, surrounded by withered leaves.

Upon entering the library, Eric saw dust everywhere. The books on the wooden tables were covered in dust, making it look more like a haunted house than a place where anyone lived.

"Sorry, it's been a long time since anyone came here, so I haven't tidied up. Feel free to sit anywhere," Sharon said with a slight smile, pointing to a dusty chair, seemingly unaware of how rude this was.

"Respected Divine Officiant, I'm here because I want to decipher a diary," Eric said, frowning at the thick layer of dust on the chair, not wanting to dirty his clothes, and got straight to the point.

Sharon didn't seem to hear Eric's words and continued searching the bookshelf. Eric didn't mind; he was used to it. Divine Realms: Legends had a variety of NPCs, especially important ones with quirky behaviors. Many famous NPCs had caused top guilds to curse.

After waiting for ten minutes, Sharon finally emerged from the bookshelves, holding a thick, old book.

"I know why you're here. The moment you entered the slums, I could feel the malevolent energy emanating from you," Sharon said seriously, placing the old book on the table, causing dust to fly everywhere. "Let me see it."

Eric understood this was triggered by the diary, so he carefully took out the old diary from his backpack and handed it to Sharon.

Sharon didn't take it immediately but recited a divine incantation, wrapping the diary in golden divine script.

As Eric wondered about Sharon's actions, the diary started to change. Black smoke emerged from the dark cover, and a grimacing face appeared, looking extremely pained."Evil, be gone! Holy Lance!"

Sharon shouted, writing the divine script in the air while chanting a third-tier divine spell. The incantation echoed throughout the library, and a golden hexagram magic circle enveloped the ceiling. Three golden lances of judgment flew from the circle, piercing the diary and tearing the grimacing face apart.

"I won't stop; we'll meet again," The grimacing face laughed coldly, its words chilling to the bone. Its blood-red eyes stared at Eric as if the words were meant for him.

Soon, the black smoke dissipated from the diary. Sharon's forehead was covered in sweat, her face pale and weak.

System: [ You have been cursed by a high demon. All attributes are reduced by 50%, and the monster-killing experience gained is reduced by 95%. ]

System: [ You have been targeted by a high demon. A high demon's phantom will come for you in thirty days. If you are killed, your body will be possessed by the high demon. ]

"Damn, could it get any worse?" Upon seeing this notification, Eric couldn't help but let out a curse, despite his typically composed demeanor.

A high demon's level was equivalent to a fourth-tier human profession, like a Sword Emperor. Although it was a phantom, it still required a third-tier professional like Sharon to deal with it. Eric was just a bystander, yet the high demon targeted him instead of Sharon.

With this curse, how could Eric level up? Not to mention the 50% attribute reduction, making him as weak as an ordinary player. Facing the high demon's phantom would be a nightmare.

"Sharon, are you okay?" Despite being cursed, Eric felt compelled to show some courtesy. Sharon shook her head slightly and smiled, "I'm fine. I didn't expect you to bring something so terrifying; it weakened me quite a bit. But the problem is solved now. If you had held onto it for just a few more days, the high demon would have possessed you, consigning you to eternal torment in hell.."

"Thank you, Sharon. Without you, I'd probably be dead," Eric said gratefully, though Sharon's words felt somewhat off. He was relieved he came in time, but his problem seemed far from resolved.

"No need to thank me. This diary isn't simple; it's a key. It records the incantation to unlock a door. You need to find this door, use the diary to enter, and retrieve the Dark Bible inside. Bring the Dark Bible to me, and I can destroy it, preventing the high demon from descending," Sharon explained.

System: [ Player has accepted the epic quest "Dark Descent." Quest objective: Find and destroy the Dark Bible to prevent the high demon's descent. Rewards unknown. ]

Eric knew this epic quest was challenging, but did it have to be this hard? At least tell him where to find the Dark Bible.

In the previous life, Ephemeral Vanquisher completed this quest in Shadowdrake Dominion. There was no way he could go to Shadowdrake Dominion now.

Even if he went to Shadowdrake Dominion, the teleportation gates weren't open yet.Even if he ran without stopping, it would still take him months to reach the border of Shadowdrake Dominion.
