Chapter 338 Pursuit
The pitch-black chains of Abyssal Bind were effortlessly shattered by the Mechanical Slaughterer, and its jagged greatsword followed with a swift, deadly slash.
This strike seemed to cut through the very air itself, sharper and faster than before.
"Man, this thing's getting stronger way too fast."
Eric hadn't expected Abyssal Bind, which could even restrain the high-level Overlord Nebulae Tiger, to be so useless. But what really freaked him out was how quickly the Mechanical Slaughterer was ramping up its combat power.
"Guess this is it for me."
Eric watched the countless wind blades flying toward him. He had no way to dodge, and all his life-saving skills had been used up against the Mechanical Guardian. Even if he had any left, they wouldn't be enough to block the attack. He quickly transformed the Ring of Wind from the Ring of Seven Luminaries into the Ring of Void.
In an instant, a rift appeared in the space before Eric, revealing a scene completely different from the Blood Hand Society's base. The rift opened wide enough for a person to pass through.
Without a second thought, Eric leaped into the rift.
The air blades flew into the spatial rift, disappearing as if they had sunk into the ocean.
This move was the Spatial Movement skill of the Ring of Void. Although it wasn't as convenient as the Elementalist's teleportation, it far surpassed teleportation in terms of distance.
Getting killed by monsters or NPCs was just a normal system punishment. But being killed by an aberrant creature was a whole different ball game.
The death penalty was doubled, the resurrection wait time was a full day, and even healing resurrection wouldn't work. Players had to wait a natural day, and upon resurrection, they would suffer a weakened state, with all attributes reduced by 30% and experience gain halved for two days.
In the early stages of Divine Realms: Legends, where time was money, wasting three days was a significant loss for any guild, even a top-tier one.
Seeing Eric disappear into the spatial rift, a hint of doubt appeared on the Mechanical Slaughterer's cold, steel-like face.
For the newly awakened Mechanical Slaughterer, there were too many unknowns in this world.
To it, Eric was just an ant that could be easily crushed. Yet this ant not only caused it some harm and froze it for a while but also escaped right before its eyes using a method it had never seen before.
"Think you can get away, little ant?" The Mechanical Slaughterer sneered, showing a rare human-like expression. "No matter how far you run, you can't escape me."
With that, the Mechanical Slaughterer swung its sword, piercing the ceiling, and leaped out of the Blood Hand Society's base.
"So this is how you fly." The Mechanical Slaughterer hovered in mid-air, smiling slightly.
If Eric heard the Mechanical Slaughterer's words and saw its flying ability, he would probably break out in a cold sweat. The Mechanical Slaughterer had not only undergone a drastic change in intelligence but also developed a terrifying learning ability. It had learned to fly just by watching Eric.
"Running pretty far." The Mechanical Slaughterer hovered above the Blood Hand Society's base, looking towards the northwest with a playful smile, then flew in that direction.
Inside the Blood Hand Society's base, Rosewater, FlameDancer, and the others were still trying to process what had just happened.
The ceiling of the base had suddenly collapsed, revealing the entire underground space, and the Mechanical Slaughterer was hovering above, then transformed into a stream of light and left Stream Town.
"Rosewater, am I seeing things, or did the Mechanical Slaughterer just fly away?" SnowGoose rubbed her eyes, unsure.
"It was definitely the Mechanical Slaughterer." Rosewater nodded firmly.
A fifty-foot-tall steel giant flying in the sky was like a Sky Fortress, possessing terrifying, destructive power and far surpassing players in mobility. Facing such an enemy, any player would feel helpless, especially those who had witnessed the Mechanical Slaughterer's power.
Although the Mechanical Slaughterer had left Stream Town, everyone still felt uneasy.
Could players really stand a chance against such a monster?
This question lingered in everyone's minds.
"Wait, if the Mechanical Slaughterer left, doesn't that mean the guild leader is dead in the vault?" FlameDancer suddenly realized, her expression changing to one of worry. She activated Galestride and rushed towards the collapsed vault.
In Divine Realms: Legends, monsters leaving combat usually meant one of two things: either they had exceeded the system's designated activity range, or they had killed all their aggro targets. Now that the Mechanical Slaughterer had left Stream Town, it was clearly the latter.
"I'm going too." Violet Mistflow quickly followed FlameDancer.
The others soon understood and followed, each feeling a mix of emotions.
They were the elite members of the Guild of Aether Wing, yet they had let their guild leader protect them. How could they still call themselves elite?
But when they reached the vault, they were stunned.
The steel walls of the vault were imprinted with the corpses of eight Mechanical Guardians, and various items were scattered on the ground. However, Eric's body was nowhere to be found.
What had happened here?
Everyone was full of questions.
FlameDancer checked the team list and found Eric's name still lit up, not grayed out, indicating he was still alive.
"What on earth happened?" FlameDancer sighed in relief but was even more puzzled.
As everyone stood there, unsure of what to do, Eric suddenly spoke in the team chat, "What's the situation in Stream Town now? Is the Mechanical Slaughterer still there?"
"Guild leader, where did you go? We thought the Mechanical Slaughterer had killed you. FlameDancer was ready to avenge you; we could barely hold her back," SnowGoose teased.
FlameDancer glared at SnowGoose, her cheeks turning red with a hint of shyness.
SnowGoose stuck out her tongue and hid behind Rosewater, peeking out with a mischievous grin.
"SnowGoose, stop being naughty. We need to discuss serious matters now." Rosewater flicked SnowGoose's forehead, pretending to be angry.
"Rosewater, I'm sorry, okay? If you keep flicking my forehead, I'll get dumber," SnowGoose pouted, eyes watering.
But Rosewater ignored SnowGoose's antics and said in the team chat, "Guild leader, the Blood Hand Society's base has been destroyed, and the Mechanical Slaughterer has flown northwest, leaving Stream Town."
"So it did follow me," Eric mused, then smiled. "It's good that it followed. Since the Mechanical Slaughterer is no longer in Stream Town, the vault's treasure is yours to claim. Don't let anyone else take advantage."
To open the magical barrier, they needed to defeat eight Mechanical Guardians and the Mechanical Slaughterer. Now that the Mechanical Guardians were all dead, only the Mechanical Slaughterer remained. Once it was defeated, the magical barrier would be lifted. With the Blood Hand Society's base destroyed, the treasure was exposed, and Stream Town's sneaky Assassins or recently revived red-named players would surely try to snatch some of it.
"Guild leader, don't worry. The Guild of Aether Wing's belongings aren't easy to steal," Rosewater said, her eyes flashing with determination. She wouldn't let anyone who dared to target the guild off the hook.
Eric then began his escape.
Spatial Movement could only cover a distance of 300,000 yards, about one or two leveling zones. But Stream Town was on the edge of Silvercrest Dominion, with no nearby towns. Even if there were, they wouldn't be able to stop the Mechanical Slaughterer.
The only place that could hold off the Mechanical Slaughterer was Silvervale City.
So Eric used Spatial Movement to reach the nearest teleportation point and teleported directly to Silvervale City.
As soon as Eric arrived in Silvervale City, he hadn't even stepped out of the teleportation magic circle when he noticed a commotion outside the hall. Numerous guild players were gathered at the entrance, looking furious, as if ready to tear someone apart.
