Chapter 400 A Strange Strike

After checking out the lineup for the first match, Scarlet and Jake stepped into the arena.

Scarlet was an Elementalist, and Jake was a Berserker. Their levels and gear were almost identical, with Jake having a slight edge in combat skills. However, Scarlet had the advantage in terms of her class. The outcome was totally up in the air, but SpiritSnake and his crew wore smug smiles, like they already had it in the bag.

This left Isabella, who was watching from the sidelines, a bit puzzled.

Isabella knew Jake's skill level well. Although he was slightly better than Scarlet, it wasn't by much, just enough to balance out the class difference. Winning wouldn't be a walk in the park.

Why were SpiritSnake and his crew so confident?

"Scarlet, watch out. Jake seems a bit off today. Don't let him get too close," Isabella whispered.

"Got it. Don't worry, I prepped for this match by completing a high-level quest and got a powerful skill. I can definitely take Jake down," Scarlet replied with a relaxed smile.

Despite her calm demeanor, Scarlet was on high alert inside.

Even though she was just in the first match, it was crucial. If she won, the team would have over a fifty percent chance of winning the whole competition.

"Kai Blackthorn, is Jake really that strong?" Violet Mistflow asked, watching the confident Jake in the arena.

"He's skilled, but not guaranteed to beat Scarlet. There are a lot of factors in a fight that can change the outcome," Eric shook his head.

As the president of Devouring Serpents, Jake had developed the guild mainly in Eldoria. Eric had gathered plenty of intel on Jake's abilities in the past.

While Eric and Violet Mistflow were discussing, the duel in the arena began.

Jake started with an Inferno Charge, launching a fierce attack without holding back, like a wild beast.

Scarlet wasn't about to let Jake get close. She chanted a spell, waving her staff with one hand and quickly writing runes with the other. When Jake was within 20 yards, a Freezing Orb blocked his path. If hit, the damage was secondary; the real problem was the significant reduction in movement speed.

Berserkers weren't known for their mobility.

So, the basic tactic for an Elementalist against a Berserker was to maintain distance and attack from afar.

Jake reacted quickly, making a sharp turn to the right. But immediately, Ice Arrows shot towards him. Jake smirked, swinging his Ironcleaver Sword to shatter the incoming arrows, then charged forward again.

Scarlet seemed prepared, waving her staff to unleash Ice Dragon Break. A massive ice dragon lunged at Jake, followed by Frost Barrier, sealing off his surroundings.

"Break!" Jake gripped his sword with both hands and swung at the ice dragon, using One-Line Slash.

Though the ice dragon shattered, Jake was covered in frost, slowing his movement. Three ice spears appeared next, and Jake tried to block them with his sword. The frost slowed him down, and he was hit by two of the spears.

-215, -221 damage numbers popped up above Jake's head.

But with 3320 health points at level 24, these attacks only took away a bit over ten percent of his health.

Jake frowned, puzzled by the freezing effect despite shattering the ice dragon.

"Looks like the new skill works well," Scarlet thought, pleased with her previous attack. Ice Dragon Break was the high-level skill she had learned.

Ordinary magic attacks could be blocked, but Ice Dragon Break was different. Even if blocked, it still had a slowing effect for five seconds, making it very effective against Berserkers.

With Jake slowed down, Scarlet didn't hold back. She cast Frost Nova Cascade, freezing the slowed Jake. A magic circle appeared around Scarlet, and five large fireballs orbited her.

"Go!"

Scarlet unleashed Inferno Barrage.

Ice spears were fast but lacked power, so Jake barely felt the two hits. But being hit by Inferno Barrage could take away half of Jake's health.

Frozen in place, Jake couldn't dodge all five mighty fireballs.

"We've got this!" FierceSnake shouted excitedly.

As the fireballs were about to hit, Jake's skin turned red, his body grew larger, and the ice around his feet shattered. No one expected Jake to have a skill to break free from restrictions.

Jake roared, swinging his sword to slice through the nearest fireball, splitting it in two. The remaining four fireballs grazed his body, causing minimal damage.

Breaking through Inferno Barrage, Jake was now only 8 yards from Scarlet. He leaped forward, using Death Leap to get close, followed by Thunderstrike Assault and a quick Sweeping Slash. Scarlet tried to Blink away but was slightly too slow, getting hit by both attacks.

Her health dropped by 902 points from over 2600, thanks to her magic shield absorbing some damage. Otherwise, Sweeping Slash alone could have taken half her health.

Scarlet blinked 15 yards away, but Jake used Second Charge to close the distance.

Scarlet waved her staff, shooting ice spears to slow Jake down. She used Frost Barrier and Freezing Orb to restrict him.

But Scarlet was also slowed by Thunderstrike Assault, moving sluggishly.

Jake's enlarged form ignored the slowing effects, charging at Scarlet with Triple Slash, sending three crescent-shaped sword beams. Scarlet used Ice Shield to block, then leaped to dodge.

Jake seemed to anticipate this, already moving to where Scarlet landed, swinging his sword.

One-Line Slash!

Scarlet knew she couldn't dodge and Blink was still on cooldown. She used her staff to block.

Though her class was weak in strength, using a weapon to block could significantly reduce damage, especially with her magic shield. She just needed to block two hits to Blink away. Skills like Jake's usually didn't last long.

Scarlet had read the trajectory of the sword, thinking she could block and create distance.

But when the Ironcleaver Sword hit her staff, she felt no force.

Instead, the sword appeared at her side, shattering her magic shield and striking her.
