Chapter 397 A Different Result
"Isabella, what the heck happened?" Scarlet asked, her concern evident.
Seeing Isabella's icy expression, Scarlet knew she was furious.
Isabella was usually calm and rarely got angry. For her to be this enraged over a message, something major must have happened.
Even Eric, who didn't know Isabella as well, could sense something was off, but he didn't feel it was his place to ask.
After reading the message, Isabella's initial anger gave way to a look of exhaustion. Eric could see she wanted to speak but didn't know how to start.
Isabella managed a faint smile and forwarded the message to Scarlet.
"That scumbag SpiritSnake! We helped him when he was at his lowest, gave him resources, and made him one of the Twelve Apostles of the Devouring Serpents. Now he's working for someone else? If I see him again, I'll break his legs!" Scarlet raged after reading the message.
"Scarlet, maybe it's a misunderstanding. SpiritSnake wouldn't betray us. Isabella practically raised him; he's like a brother to her. How could he betray her?" FierceSnake, a cold young man, was shocked.
SpiritSnake had always been loyal and earnest, especially in front of Isabella. He didn't seem like someone who would do such a thing.
"If you don't believe me, look at the evidence yourself." Scarlet made the message visible to everyone.
The message contained numerous pieces of evidence showing that SpiritSnake had been bought off before Isabella even started her plan. He had been leaking information to the enemy, and just an hour ago, he became one of their five duelists. The evidence was irrefutable.
FierceSnake was speechless, his eyes turning bloodshot as he frantically tried to contact SpiritSnake, but to no avail. He was furious and wanted to confront him immediately.
But compared to FierceSnake's heartbreak, Isabella was the most hurt.
She had treated SpiritSnake like a brother, only for him to betray her at the most critical moment.
In a five-person duel, Isabella had calculated that the best chances of winning were with herself, SpiritSnake, and Kai Blackthorn. Scarlet and FierceSnake had less than a fifty percent chance. With SpiritSnake on the other side, their chances plummeted.
"Isabella, don't worry. Even if SpiritSnake switched sides, we still have other executors. They've improved a lot recently. I'll contact them right away," Scarlet tried to comfort her.
Isabella shook her head.
If SpiritSnake had betrayed them, the enemy likely knew all her cards except for Kai Blackthorn. They probably couldn't make it in time. She would have to find a replacement and hope for the best.
She wasn't out of options yet. If Scarlet and FierceSnake could each win a match, they still had a chance.
Isabella was grateful she hadn't revealed anything about Kai Blackthorn, preventing a total deadlock.
Eric, watching this unfold, couldn't help but think about Isabella leaving the Devouring Serpents and the virtual gaming world.
Her departure had caused a huge stir in the gaming community, but no one knew why she left.
Eric now suspected it was due to internal conflicts within the Devouring Serpents.
And now, it seemed like events that should have happened two years later were happening now.
"What is going on?"
Eric had avoided competing for the first clear of the Eternal Slumber Dungeon to prevent altering history too much. But history was changing rapidly and negatively.
If Isabella left the virtual gaming world now, Aether Wing would lose a reliable ally, and other guilds would become more aggressive.
This was not what Eric wanted.
Since history was already out of control, Eric decided to break it further to pave a better path for the future.
As Isabella was about to find a fifth person and Scarlet was frantically contacting people, Eric stepped forward.
"Ms. Collins, if you need a skilled player, I can introduce someone," Eric said.
Isabella's eyes lit up.
But Scarlet rolled her eyes at Eric. "Kai Blackthorn, don't mess around. We need a top-tier player, not just any skilled player. Someone who can take on a hundred but isn't too famous. Your guild's Rosewater and FlameDancer are strong, but they're too well-known. The enemy wouldn't agree."
The duel was an internal matter for the Devouring Serpents, agreed to be kept secret. They could bring in outside help, but not famous players to avoid drawing attention.
Of course, avoiding attention was just an excuse.
The enemy didn't want Isabella to bring in too strong of an outsider. Isabella's resources within the Devouring Serpents were limited, putting her at a disadvantage.
Rosewater and FlameDancer from Aether Wing were too well-known. The enemy wouldn't agree unless they were crazy.
Eric smiled at Scarlet. "The person I have in mind isn't well-known. Their current strength is comparable to Rosewater and FlameDancer."
Scarlet was puzzled but saw that Eric wasn't joking, which made her a bit frustrated.
Isabella was curious. She knew a lot about Aether Wing but didn't expect they had such hidden talents. Aether Wing was becoming more mysterious to her.
"Thank you. I'll pay two million credits as a reward. Is that acceptable?" Isabella asked gratefully.
"Since Ms. Collins has no objections, I'll contact them now," Eric nodded and opened his system menu.
