Chapter 193 Church
The Next Morning.
The Darkwood Three Brothers knelt outside the SWAT team headquarters, heads bowed in shame. Beside them was a file detailing their involvement in child trafficking.
However, the evidence only implicated them, leaving their superiors untouched.
Leonard stood before them, scratching his head in disbelief.
'Elbert did this so quickly? But this is just the tip of the iceberg; the criminal organization runs far deeper.' he felt puzzled.
"Captain," a SWAT officer approached, holding a file, "we've received intel from the underworld."
Leonard's expression turned serious. "What is it?"
The officer hesitated, slightly amused. "The Black Fox gang, along with a dozen others, have shut down all their operations – nightclubs, bathhouses, casinos… over a hundred establishments in total."
Leonard frowned. "What are they thinking?"
"They claim they're 'renovating,'" the officer chuckled. "Apparently, they're going legit! Hotels, restaurants, cafes, even bookstores. Word on the street is they're incorporating high-tech elements."
"Got it." Leonard paused, his mind struggling to catch up. "Hold on- These gangsters are opening… restaurants?"
"And bookstores? High-tech ones, no less?"
"Can they even read?"
"Informants say it's an order from their new boss, Paul Two."
"Paul Two?"
Leonard's eyes widened. He took a slow sip from his thermos, astonished.
'That kid is a bonafide genius.' he praised inside,
The officer cleared his throat, his tone cautious. "Captain, something feels off. Should we investigate further and see if there's more to it?"
"No need!" Leonard snapped out of his thoughts. "Give them time. We can't completely eradicate them, anyway. If they're genuinely turning over a new leaf, all the better."
After a moment, he asked, "Where's Agent Trinity?"
The officer sighed, slightly frustrated. "Ever since she arrived in Wavehaven, she's been roaming around. We can't seem to rein her in."
Leonard pinched the bridge of his nose.
'One's off playing vigilante, the other's roaming… When would they actually do some real work?' he questioned himself, smiling bitterly.
Luminous Hall, 5th floor.
"Sir," Melissa began hesitantly, "all our businesses are closed, and your plan is in motion. However, our income has dried up. And can we really trust these youngsters to handle this?"
Elbert smiled reassuringly. "It's not about trusting them, Melissa. It's about trusting you. With your intelligence, this should be a cakewalk."
Melissa felt warmth.
"Once everything is up and running," Elbert continued, "don't hide in the shadows. Become a legitimate entrepreneur, and give your father some peace of mind."
Melissa bit her lip, knowing she couldn't refuse Mr. Paul Two. Her brief foray into the underworld had been cut short by him.
'So be it. He was Mr. Paul Two, after all; a man who seemed to abhor anything tainted.' She sighed inwardly.
"And Melissa," he added, "don't worry about the money." He smiled, gesturing toward the entrance. "Miss Elowen, please come in."
Melissa's breath hitched as she saw the woman enter.
'Long, flowing black hair, a figure that could launch a thousand ships… Wait...'
'Wasn't this the woman who had shared a drink with Elbert the other night?'
Melissa suddenly recalled someone.
Elowen approached, holding a stack of documents. "Mr. Perry from Pioneer Company is officially registered, and the eight billion dollars in funding is ready."
Elbert nodded. "Excellent. Discuss the details with Melissa; I have a meeting to attend."
He rose and left, leaving the two women with their thoughts.
Elowen thought, 'He's really not interested in me, is he?'
Melissa also thought, 'Such a brilliant man, yet so clueless about women.'
An hour later, Elbert sat in a café in Wavehaven's outskirts, leisurely sipping his latte. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, bathing the café in a warm glow.
Across the street stood an old, dilapidated church. Despite its remote location and bad state, luxury cars pulled up one after another.
Over thirty silent figures with bodyguards hurried intside.
Soon, the church bell tolled.
Noon, at 12 o'clock.
Elbert stood up, ready to leave.
"Sir," a waiter approached, smiling politely, "we have a promotion today. You're entitled to a free refill."
Elbert shook his head, smiling. "Thank you, but I have a meeting to attend."
