Chapter 260 ApexGuardians
During the five-hour flight, Elbert looked like he was chewing on nails.
About three months back, Gary hit the front lines with ApexGuardians' top dog, General Jeffery.
He was all in on that warrior transformation gig.
That spot was right on the Veridiania border.
Regular folks always thought there was no war, like it was some far-off nightmare.
But truth was, the northern, southern, and coastal parts of Veridiania were always in the thick of it.
Mercenaries, crime rings, and rebels were always butting heads with Veridiania's defense forces.
Elbert was scratching his head over it. 'That place has the so-called strongest defense force, the ApexGuardians! How the heck did Gary get nabbed?'
But with the Veridiania border being a wild, war-torn jungle and no network monitoring, Robert Williams couldn't get the lowdown.
Elbert was in the dark too!
They were closing in on their destination, a thick, never-ending jungle.
"Bro, I'm going first."
Inside the chopper, an 18-year-old girl with short hair and a no-nonsense look pulled out some camo paint and drew three lines on each cheek.
She was skinny but lugging a massive metal box on her back!
Her delicate, charming face was striking, especially her eyes, which had this deep, captivating look.
She scanned the area outside the cabin like she could see through walls!
Elbert gave a slight nod and mouthed something, but no sound came out.
Next to him, Summer made a hand gesture, using sign language. "Autumn, be careful."
Autumn could read Elbert's lips and understand Summer's signs.
She nodded, opened the cabin door, and jumped out!
"Oh my God!"
A shout came from the cockpit!
The chopper pilot, Atticus, a 50-year-old cool-as-ice guy hired by Gregory for Elbert, couldn't keep quiet.
He knew the plane's owner wasn't your average Joe, so he usually flew in silence.
But now, he couldn't help but yell!
"Mr. Perry! We're at six thousand feet, how did that girl just jump out!"
Atticus strained to look down, it had been at least 50 seconds, and he hadn't seen a parachute!
Atticus's hands were shaking!
At this height, it would be fatal!
After a few more seconds, a loud boom came from the ground!
The trees shook!
Birds scattered like crazy!
A voice came through Summer's headset, "I'm ready, you can move freely with me here!"
Was that the girl's voice?
She landed?
She jumped down just like that!
Completely unscathed? Atticus was in shock!
Elbert grinned. "Atticus, keep your eyes on the sky, she's fine. She's my sister!"
In the jungle, surrounded by towering trees, a hidden military base peeked through.
All the camouflaged tents, big and small, had no smoke, no towers, and used no external power or networks.
All their comms gear was hooked up to some top-secret satellites.
This was a classic mobile special ops unit, super hush-hush!
Judging by the tent sizes, there were about 300 folks in this unit.
But no one dared to mess with them!
This was Veridiania's most secretive and badass single-combat special ops unit, the ApexGuardians!
Right now, 283 ApexGuardians soldiers, decked out in camo vests, were baking under the scorching sun.
They were all staring up at the slowly approaching LD00001 private chopper. The leader of ApexGuardians Group 1, codenamed Gray Bear, was among them.
And next to him, an old dude who looked about 70 but had the body of a bodybuilding champ, was standing with his hands behind his back!
That was General Jeffery!
Gray Bear wrinkled his nose and grumbled, "Sir, isn't it a bit much for us to roll out the red carpet for some corporate bigwig?"
Jeffery raised an eyebrow. "What, you think he's not worth it? Did you forget that punch at the bank?"
"Sir, I wasn't ready then! He caught me off guard! I think I can take him on again!"
Jeffery waved him off. "I'd buy that from anyone else, but you? Gray Bear of the ApexGuardians! How could you have a moment of slack? Face it, you're just not as good as him. Suck it up!"
Gray Bear was fuming but kept his mouth shut!
It wasn't just Gray Bear; all 280-plus members of the ApexGuardians were feeling a bit salty!
When did the mighty ApexGuardians start needing a civilian tycoon?
In a corner of the formation stood a towering dude, six feet six inches tall, with bulging muscles and a face redder than a tomato.
This guy had a rugged, fierce look, with dark red eyebrows that screamed "hothead."
He'd been holding back but finally blurted out, "Sir, I admit, Gary's capture was our screw-up. But the enemy's just a small merc camp. We can easily take it down with a ground team and some fire support, no more than 40 people! Even if they've got modified humans, we've got a 100% chance of winning! Sir, why do we need outsiders? And, with all due respect, whether that guy can rescue Gary is still up in the air! Most importantly, we're not good at working with outsiders!"
Jeffery sighed. He knew his soldiers were proud and needed respect.
"Red Brow, when he gets here, you better keep your cool, got it?"
The guy with the red eyebrows raised his head and grumbled, "Why should I?"
As they were talking, they saw the chopper, still a few clicks away, hovering in the air.
The cabin door suddenly swung open.
A blurry figure carrying a huge box jumped out!
It was Autumn!
Then, with a loud boom, the figure landed in the distant jungle and vanished!
The ApexGuardians members all frowned!
What the heck was going on?
Was the newcomer a modified human?
Their faces twisted with even more resentment.
The urge to show up the newcomer was growing stronger!
