Chapter 284 The Clash Between Technology and Superstition
"Report, sir!" a techie suddenly yelled, "The hacker left us a message!"
"That jerk's mocking us?" The commander, eyes red with rage, rushed to the screen. "When I find him, I'll..."
But when he saw the message, he froze.
[Borrowing your gear, will return in one day. Paul Four.]
The commander's face went blank.
He knew that name all too well from his cyber defense training.
Wasn't this the hacker who almost brought down the government building?
"Sir, should I trace this IP?" the techie asked.
"No need," the commander replied.
"Sir, come on, trust me!" the techie insisted.
"I said no need," he repeated.
"Just give me an hour, I can find him!" the techie was persistent.
"Are you deaf? I said no!" the commander snapped.
He slumped into his chair, defeated.
The communicator buzzed again, "Sir, another geological survey machine's been taken!"
The commander waved it off, "It's fine, let them take it."
"Sir, the fifth survey machine's gone!" the communicator buzzed again.
"It's fine, let them have it," he repeated.
The techie was baffled, "Sir, why? Those machines are worth billions!"
"Money doesn't matter. We can't mess with Paul Four!" The commander leaned back, bitterly saying, "I don't want to see those crazy hacker codes on our systems."
"Sir, what are you talking about?" the techie was even more confused.
The commander said softly, "Listen, whatever Paul Four wants, give it to him. Do not provoke him, under any circumstances! If we screw this up, it could be a national disaster!"
Early morning, the villagers of Luxor were jolted awake by a series of roars.
What was that? Something in the sky?
But the sound vanished as quickly as it came, and the villagers shook their heads, thinking it was just a dream.
Outside the village, on a flat piece of land, Elbert nodded slightly. In front of him stood four supersonic drones, gleaming in the morning sun.
Meanwhile, Dawn was called back home by her father to help with the ritual ceremony.
Elbert quickly filled the drones' spraying devices with the solution. He squatted down, feeling the ground's vibrations.
Everything was ready, just waiting for the right moment!
In the village square, Master Debussy had set up a strange frame, with tattered colorful cloth strips fluttering in the wind.
Half-dry leaves burned on both sides, thick smoke billowing straight into the sky.
From a distance, it looked grand and mysterious.
The villagers knelt respectfully in the center of the square. Dawn, the most beautiful girl in the village, had her face painted and wore a strange crown, holding a jar of clear water.
Master Debussy then took out a row of smooth iron nails. Clearing his throat, he solemnly said, "My people, these are the magic nails I forged from the metal you gave me. It took a lot of my magic power. When you go into the fields, plant one every two hundred steps. In ten days, it will ward off the evil spirits."
Saying this, Master Debussy took a cup of clear water from Dawn's jar and drank it slowly, "But! The land of that outsider does not deserve the protection of the gods. Skip it!"
"Yes, Master Debussy!" The villagers responded in unison. Among them, Dawn's father let out a sigh of relief!
Elbert had also arrived, watching from a distance.
'Magic nails to ward off evil spirits, what nonsense! In ten days? They will have fled long before that!' Elbert sneered to himself.
As for Dawn, the so-called assistant to the ritual was just serving tea and water.
Dawn looked helplessly at Elbert in the distance, unable to leave her post.
But deep down, she was praying hard for Elbert's plan to work.
This was a showdown between superstition and science.
"My people, just watch. Soon, that outsider's land will be the most barren in the village. He doesn't worship the gods, doesn't work! He doesn't deserve the harvest!" Master Debussy sneered, glaring at Elbert.
The villagers had mixed feelings. Sure, Elbert was a big landowner, but the one who went against the gods never ended well.
Master Debussy waved his hand, and the villagers grabbed the iron nails, rushing to their fields.
Debussy then taunted, "Outsider, didn't you say you'd show us a miracle today? Where is it?"
Elbert chuckled, looking up at the sky, "There!"
In the distance, a sonic boom echoed. The villagers looked up, astonished, as several white dots rapidly approached.
Even though the villagers lived in a remote area, they had at least heard of planes.
But seeing one fly overhead was the first.
They all gaped, eyes wide with wonder.
Master Debussy's body trembled. 'Is he really that powerful? He can deploy drones?'
He struggled internally, resisting the urge to flee. 'So what if they're planes? The villagers know what they are! Pretending to be a god won't work!'
Dawn's hands trembled slightly as she held the water jar, her black pupils reflecting the four beautiful arcs in the sky.
These were drones, capable of artificial rainfall or spraying pesticides.
She clearly saw that these drones had large liquid tanks hanging underneath.
The drones flew over Elbert's fields, spraying a fine mist of liquid. In the sunlight, it formed a colorful water curtain in the sky.
It was quite a sight!
The drones circled back and forth. In no time, 90 acres of farmland were completely covered.
The villagers stood in place, looking up at the magnificent scene in the sky, their hearts filled with amazement.
"They're just pesticide-spraying planes. Is this what you call a miracle?" Master Debussy shouted, "Do you think we don't know?"
The villagers snapped out of it. Many of them who worked for Difco Company had heard of such things.
It just saved some labor, and they had used fertilizers before, but it didn't work on this land!
The soybeans still wouldn't grow! There must be evil spirits at work!
Elbert ambled to the altar and sat down, "Miracles take time! I'll wait patiently with Master Debussy!"
Debussy's mouth twitched. He had a sense of foreboding. But with Elbert staying by his side, he had no choice but to stay calm.
Four hours later, Master Debussy became more and more composed.
The villagers had finished planting the iron nails and stood up, looking at Elbert's field.
No change happened!
Dawn looked anxious, "Mr. Perry, water, there's no water in the field!"
Elbert smiled gently, "The water will come, but it needs to be slowly drawn in!"
As soon as Elbert finished speaking, the ground shook. Around the field, small stones began to roll.
The villagers started to panic. Had they angered the evil spirits?
On one side of the field, dust suddenly flew! A calf-sized tracked vehicle with a metal drill head at the front burst out of the soil.
One after another, a total of five. They emerged from five different points in Elbert's field!
After it, there was a faint rumble beneath the surface. With a loud roar, a thick water column shot out, instantly covering the field.
The dust in the field was washed away, and the dry soil quickly absorbed the remaining moisture.
The villagers blinked, their expressions shocked.
On the soil, tiny green sprouts began to appear!
The village chief, with cloudy eyes, trembled, "Are those soybeans sprouting?"
"God bless!" someone exclaimed.
"A miracle!" another one shouted.
The villagers knelt and shouted in awe.
