Chapter 207 SS Alert
Trinity's phone rang as well.
It was a message marked with a red exclamation point, signed by FIC.
She navigated through a series of complex security protocols before the message finally opened.
[SS ALERT: Agent Trinity, reliable intel confirms the presence of approximately 30 international augmenters in Wavehaven. The preliminary assessment identifies 25 as A5+ level and 5 as B+ level.]
[Their purpose is unknown.]
[This represents an unexpected gathering of augmented individuals. Coordinate immediately with Wavehaven authorities to investigate and prevent a large-scale incident.]
Trinity's blood ran cold. Thirty augmenters, and an SS-level alert? In all her time with FIC, she'd never seen anything higher than a single S. Her usual nonchalance evaporated, replaced by dread.
Pulling Leonard aside, she spoke in a hushed, urgent tone. "Officer Reed, I believe you're aware of the organization I truly represent."
Leonard, sensing the gravity of the situation, didn't mince words. "Let's not pretend, Agent Trinity. Veridiania intelligence isn't easily fooled. We know you're affiliated with FIC, the International Augmenter Regulatory Committee."
"Good," Trinity said, her voice tense. "And you know we can monitor augmented activity worldwide."
"There's an alert... SS-level, Officer Reed. And it's centered right here in Wavehaven."
"What?" Leonard's eyebrows shot up. "SS-level?! What's happening?"
"Thirty international augmenters," Trinity said, her voice barely a whisper. "25 A5+ level, 5 B+. They wouldn't gather on Wavehaven without a reason. Something big is about to happen, and they're organized."
'Organized? Thirty augmenters?' A strange calm settled over Leonard.
'Elbert's cryptic message suddenly made sense.' He thought to himself, nodding.
"Officer Reed," Trinity pressed, her voice panicked, "we need to act. This is serious!" She was out of her depth. A barely B-level augmenter like herself wouldn't last a minute against that kind of firepower. Even her charm ability would be useless.
"Relax, Agent Trinity," Leonard said, leisurely sipping from his thermos. "It's all under control."
"Under control?" She stared at him, incredulous. "How can you be so calm? We're talking about thirty augmenters! It's enough to tear Wavehaven apart!"
Leonard chuckled. "Thirty augmenters, you say? Sounds like the Card Club is having a field trip."
"You're joking, right?" she was aghast. "Officer Reed, this is no laughing matter! With all due respect, Veridiania's augmentation technology is outdated. Your SWAT teams, even with all of Wavehaven's resources, wouldn't last against that kind of power. What could you possibly do?"
"You're right," Leonard conceded, grinning slyly. "I can't just conjure up augmenters out of thin air."
"But who needs augmenters," he continued, whispering, "when you have a god on your side?"
Trinity stared at him, utterly bewildered. Was the head of Wavehaven's police force losing his mind?
"Don't worry," Leonard said, chuckling at her expression. "You'll see soon enough. Besides, we don't even know their exact location. There's not much we can do at this point."
He turned and ordered, "Captain Morrison! Five teams, prepped and ready to roll!"
"Sir!"
Leonard paused, stroking his chin thoughtfully. "And Captain, better call in some extra ambulances. Oh, and stretches; lots of them."
"Also, clear out thirty holding cells. We're going to have some international guests tonight."
Captain Morrison, a veteran of several Card Club incidents, simply nodded. "Yes, Sir." He knew exactly what Leonard meant. The "God" he spoke of was the real deal.
Trinity, however, was beside herself. "Officer Reed, this complacency will be our downfall! My organization—"
"Enough," Leonard interrupted firmly. "Frankly, Agent Trinity, FIC is nothing more than a self-proclaimed authority. Veridiania doesn't answer to you."
He gazed out the window, a hint of pride in his voice. "And with the asset we have in play, it won't be long before Veridiania has its own augmented forces to contend with any threat."
He sighed. "Forget your SS-level alert, Agent Trinity. We have more pressing matters to attend to. Like catching the Child-Eater."
Trinity was speechless. "But—"
"No buts," he said, waving dismissively. "Tonight, Agent Trinity, we reap what we sow."
