Chapter 45 Try the Fried Rice First

"How did you know about this?" Lori asked in disbelief.

The two young girls hesitated, not knowing how to say it. Suddenly, Mary had a flash of inspiration and said, "We went to a friend's casino before, and we saw Elbert gambling heavily there. He bet $10 billion in one go!"

"You saw it with your own eyes?" Lori's voice was tinged with shock.

"Yes, Lori," the two young girls replied, not daring to look up.

Lori was stunned. Gambling $10 billion in one go was beyond anything she could comprehend. What kind of wealth did that imply? The man who wouldn't waste even $3 on an ice cream cone, who preferred wearing $20 white shirts, and worked part-time for three years—he was suddenly a multi-billionaire?

Lori instinctively touched her handbag and remembered the $3,000 she had prepared to give Elbert. She assumed he had no savings and needed money to eat. How ridiculous it seemed now.

'Is he trying to make me look foolish?' she thought.

A sense of humiliation crept over her, and gradually, a gloom enveloped her heart. She couldn't help but frown.

'Elbert, you are so young and have such a vast fortune. Why would you be hiding it from me? What is your true motive?' she thought to herself.

Lori also recalled moments that now seemed suspicious—Elbert discussing economic policies at the dinner table, amazing everyone, and the mysterious way he made Elysium Care Center's Curtis James close a $2 billion deal. These events hinted that Elbert was no ordinary person. These strange signs made Lori uneasy, even fearful.

"Lori, don't overthink it. Elbert is not a bad person! When Dad returns, we will tell him too," The two young girls tried to salvage the situation, feeling guilty for exposing the secret

But Lori shook her head blankly. In her eyes, Mary and Susan now seemed naive. Ten billion dollars was not an amount one casually had. Yet Elbert willingly worked as a driver for the Brown Family, and his actions were filled with mystery. She started to doubt their words.

"Mary, I remember there's a top detective in your organization; what's his name?" Lori asked, thinking hard.

"Yes, Mark Jackson, a famous private detective in Veridiania. Are you looking for him?"

"That's right. Help me contact him. I want him to investigate Elbert's background thoroughly. No matter how much he charges, I won't bargain!"

"Lori, we don’t need to do it. I believe in Elbert," Mary said softly as if she had done something wrong.

"Belief is not enough! Have you forgotten about Steven Harris? You guys are too quick to forget past mistakes! Back then, how did we treat him? How did Father treat him? And how did Steven treat us?" Lori shouted.

The mention of Steven Harris made the two young girls freeze, their bodies feeling like they had fallen into an ice cave, eyes filled with horror. Steven Harris, the evil man kindly taken in by their father, had tried to seize the Brown Family's assets and even wanted to marry Lori. Although he was eventually sent to prison, he remained a lingering nightmare for the Brown Family sisters.

"I originally started to trust Elbert. But knowing all this, I have to be cautious again! For everyone's safety, Elbert must be investigated thoroughly. If I really misunderstood him, I will sincerely apologize to him," Lori said cautiously, glancing in the direction of the kitchen.

"Now, let's pretend nothing happened." Lori led the two girls back to the kitchen, her mind racing with doubts and suspicions.

As they entered the kitchen, a rich aroma wafted in. Elbert stood with his arms crossed, smiling at the three women. On the table in front of them were three large plates of fried rice, the fragrance tantalizing.

"Ladies, you've been whispering for so long; you must be tired! Why don't you try my fried rice first?"

"Wow, great! We can taste Elbert's cooking again!" Mary and Susan rushed forward eagerly.

Lori looked at the handsome, kind-smiling man in front of her with a mixture of doubt and confusion.

'Is he a good person or a bad person?'she thought.
