Chapter 261 The Stubbornness of the King of Soldiers
Dust kicked up as the chopper touched down, and Elbert and Summer hopped out one after the other.
The ApexGuardians squad saw them and felt kinda hopeless.
A good-looking dude in a white shirt and a kid who looked barely eighteen?
So scrawny!
How could they be fighters?
But Elbert didn't give a damn.
He walked up to Jeffery. "Jeffery, where's Gary? Let's get this rescue mission rolling!"
Jeffery gave a bitter smile.
"Chill! We still got 3 hours left!"
Elbert was confused. "Huh?"
Jeffery patted Elbert's shoulder and smirked. "You think Gary's just some random guy, or that I'm just some random guy, or that our ApexGuardians are just for show? If Gary was really in trouble, would we be standing here waiting for you?"
Elbert was even more puzzled. "Jeffery, what are you getting at?"
Jeffery handed over a crumpled note. "See for yourself."
[Jeffery, I'm heading up the mountain to explore today. Might get captured. Don't do anything. Come rescue me in 8 hours. Remember to notify Elbert. I'm out.]
Elbert was speechless.
That messy handwriting was definitely Gary's!
Jeffery smiled bitterly again. "Like the note says, Gary slipped away when I wasn't looking."
"What the heck is going on?" Elbert was super confused.
Jeffery sighed. "Don't worry, Gary's a top expert in cyborg tech. Since he came out of retirement, tons of groups have tried to nab him. If they catch Gary, it's just to convince him to do cyborg research. He won't be in any real danger."
Jeffery put his hands behind his back, looking a bit embarrassed. "I can't figure out Gary's real motive this time."
Elbert sighed too. 'Gary! You're famous, your medical skills unmatched in Veridiania. Yet you insist on being a carefree old dude.'
Then, Elbert nodded. "I'm not waiting that long. One hour tops, Summer and I will move. No matter what Gary's up to, I'll drag him back. He can't do anything about it."
Jeffery nodded slightly, hesitating before saying, "But I can guess one reason Gary wanted you here."
Elbert turned to ask. "What?"
Jeffery pointed with his mouth. "For my soldiers!"
Following Jeffery's gaze, Elbert looked over.
There were 283 ApexGuardians warriors.
Under the blazing sun, they looked fierce, each one tall, ripped, and determined, like gods!
Truly the kings of soldiers!
In front of these muscular warriors, Elbert looked kinda small!
But their stares at Elbert weren't friendly at all.
They even seemed ready to throw down with Elbert right there!
Elbert glanced sideways. "Gary's cyborg research isn't going well?"
Jeffery replied, "How could that be! Gary's a genius! His cyborg tech is world-class!"
Jeffery's eyes flickered as he looked at the silent Summer, hinting at something.
He knew that Summer's super combat skills were Gary's handiwork!
Jeffery sighed again, looking kinda bitter. "It's my soldiers who don't wanna go through his cyborg experiments! I trust their skills! They're the peak of human potential! But, it's exactly because of this pride that they refuse cyborg enhancements! To them, only physical training is the real deal! They look down on improving themselves through genetic means!"
Jeffery glanced at his ApexGuardians with a complicated expression. "We've faced many cyborgs in battle, and my guys took them all down! Not a single one survived! But I know that regular physical warriors will eventually get left in the dust by cyborgs!"
Jeffery's face darkened. "I don't want my elite soldiers to die at the hands of cyborgs in the future. I hope someone can help change their mindset."
Jeffery sighed. "I guess Gary feels the same way. After all, you're the strongest cyborg I've ever seen! Even if you don't say it, I can tell you're one of Gary's creations, right?"
Elbert nodded slightly. "Got it."
When he looked at the ApexGuardians warriors again, he saw something different in their eyes.
Pride, confidence, that kind of disdain for the world that belonged to the kings of soldiers!
Their stares weren't full of hate or anger, but full of challenge!
They wanted to prove themselves.
To show that true strength came from hard training and bloody battles!
Elbert took a deep breath. "Jeffery, you picked the right guy. I gotta help you with this mission! And I gotta give these guardians of Veridiania's borders a real wake-up call!"
"Elbert! Hey there!"
A booming voice rang out, and Gray Bear, the leader of ApexGuardians Group 1, stepped out of the ranks.
First, he gave a sharp military salute. Then, he extended his hand, as big as a fan, to shake Elbert's.
"Gray Bear, long time no see."
Elbert smiled lightly and extended his hand in return.
Bones creaked.
Gray Bear's handshake had some hidden strength.
The first contest was a secret test of strength!
Gray Bear started with a smile, but his brows gradually furrowed.
He used at least 90% of his strength, but Elbert's hand was like iron!
Gray Bear nodded slightly, turned, and went back to the ranks!
"I'll go! I'll test Elbert's strength, oh no! Let me welcome Elbert!"
Red Brow laughed and stepped out of the ranks, looking even stronger than Gray Bear!
After a quick handshake, Red Brow's expression turned serious, and he silently went back to the ranks!
Then, eight more ApexGuardians members came out one by one to welcome Elbert!
Elbert always had a smile on his face.
His hand seemed to lift effortlessly, but all the ApexGuardians members frowned and returned!
Then, the ApexGuardians members nodded in agreement in their hearts!
This guy had some strength!
But this was just a warm-up, the real test hadn't started yet!
The impulsive Red Brow stepped aside, revealing the temporary base behind him.
"Elbert, your strength is impressive! You up for a match with us?"
Looking at the various off-road obstacles, heavy training equipment, and the fighting ring and shooting ranges in the base behind him, Elbert nodded slightly. "No rush, let me rescue Gary first, then I'll have a good match with you all!"
