Chapter 44 The Origin of Elbert Is A Mystery

Elbert and Lori had just walked into the lobby of the Brown Family estate when they smelled something burning. Following the scent, they arrived at the kitchen and pushed the door open.

The kitchen was filled with smoke, making it hard to see!

"Lori, Elbert!" As the smoke cleared, they saw Mary and Susan standing there, faces covered in soot. On the table in front of them was a tightly covered dish.

"We spent two whole hours making dinner for Elbert!" Mary announced.

"What are you doing?" Lori asked, frowning.

"We did something wrong before and wanted to apologize to Elbert!" Susan explained. "To show our sincerity, we cooked for the first time in our lives, just for Elbert!" the two girls said in unison.

"Elbert, come over and try it!" Mary eagerly pulled Elbert to the table.

"Alright." Elbert scratched his head, not expecting this scene. Mary and Susan were always so impulsive! He gently lifted the cover.

A puff of black smoke rose like a ghostly wisp.

"What is this?" Elbert asked, staring at the plate of blackened food.

"Fried rice, like you taught us, but we might have overcooked it a bit!" the two girls said, sticking out their tongues.

"We really tried our best! We hope you don't hold a grudge against us. Just take one bite..."

"Detected benzo, one of the most potent carcinogens in the world. It not only exists in coal smoke and vehicle exhaust but also in burnt food, like the charred rice in front of you!"

Hearing Robert's warning, Elbert instinctively took two steps back. "Your guys are so kind! I forgive you!"

"That's great, Elbert, enjoy your meal!" Mary and Susan sighed in relief and pulled Lori out of the kitchen.

As soon as they stepped out, the two girls became nervous. "Lori, we have something to confess."

"What is it?" Lori frowned, sensing something was wrong.

Mary timidly took out a bank card and handed it to Lori.

"This card..." Susan felt embarrassed.

"This is the bank card Father gave to Elbert, with $5 million on it, untouched and left in the sunroom on the fifth floor!" Mary said.

"What?" Lori's eyes widened in surprise.

Mary hesitated, "And a few days ago, right after Elbert got the card, he left it there. Susan and I secretly hid it."

"What?" Lori was even more shocked.

"So, Elbert never intended to take our family's money from the beginning, and he's not the person we thought he was. But Susan and I misunderstood him and wanted to kick him out! We are sorry," Mary said with a complicated expression.

"What?" Lori's mind was in turmoil. Scenes flashed through her mind.

'Elbert making shocking statements, buying 200 sets of clothes at once, spending $200,000.' 'Elbert casually swiping his card to buy a top luxury lighter, spending $1 million.'

'Elbert smiling and saying he left $4 million for Gary.'

Lori was stunned.

'If he didn't take the card, then where did he get the money? Wasn't Elbert a poor guy living off part-time jobs before?'

'And most importantly! Elbert came to the Brown Family, not for the money. Then what does he want? Could it really be, as he said, for me?'

'Impossible! Elbert always makes me angry; it can't be for me!'

After these thoughts, her mind turned to turmoil.

Lori shook her head vigorously, filled with confusion and anxiety!

Seeing her Lori's changing expressions, Mary awkwardly said, "And Elbert is actually very wealthy."

"What do you mean by very wealthy?" Lori raised an eyebrow.

"Elbert might have $100 million or $200 million..." Mary counted on her fingers. Suddenly, she paused. But she suddenly remembered that the casino manager never mentioned how much was in Elbert's account!

"Elbert has over $100 million?" Lori asked in shock.

"More than that."

"$1 billion?"

"At least $10 billion! We don't know the exact amount!"

"What?" Lori was stunned again.

'$10 billion?' she was taken aback.

She knew if they said was true, Elbert could be one of the city's richest men, and that was so unreal, so she soon denied this possibility.

Although Lori was the daughter of the richest man, she had always earned her own money. Over the past three years, even with her father's help, she had barely saved $100 million!

Elbert had $10 billion? That was like 100 of herself? Thinking about Elbert's usual frugality, Lori couldn't believe it!
