Chapter 13 Crossroads
After an afternoon at the library, Teresa's phone rang with a call from her professor, prompting her to visit the Department Head's office.
Expecting a reprimand for her recent translation work, she was instead presented with an unexpected offer: a year-long exchange at Jena University in Germany. As someone who majors in German major, she accepted without hesitation.
"Prepare your paperwork. You will be off to Jena once it's all in order," the Department Head said, his smile was both commanding and kind. "Make us proud!"
"I'm grateful for this chance. I'll make you proud," Teresa promised.
With a satisfied nod, the Department Head watched her leave, then took a call from Preston.
"Did Teresa accept the offer?" Preston asked.
"She's thrilled," the Department Head replied.
"Great. Fast-track her paperwork. She needs to leave soon," Preston directed.
"Consider it done," the Department Head assured.
After the call, Unity, puzzled, spoke up. "Uncle, the Garcias barely acknowledge us. Why rush Teresa out of the country?"
"Precaution is crucial," Preston replied sternly. "Her departure clears the way for our next move with the Garcias."
"And how will they accept me?" Unity asked, her voice sounded worried.
"Have Gabriel's child. They'll have to accept you if you have his baby."
Unity gasped, "A baby?!"
"Trust me, I have everything planned."
Over the next week, Teresa prepared for her exchange in Germany. Her family, though concerned, still supported her decision. Her father, ever protective, he even bought her an apartment near the Jena university, and also hired a housekeeper, ensuring she could focus on her studies.
The department soon confirmed her exchange was set, advising her to pack for an imminent departure.
As Teresa left the office, intent on sharing the news with her mother, Liam's call intercepted her thoughts.
They hadn't spoken since their last uncomfortable encounter. Now, his name on her screen gave her pause, but she still answered.
"Teresa, meet me at the main gate," Liam's voice was steady.
"But I thought..." she started.
"Save the explanations for later. I'll be waiting," he cut in, and ended the call.
Teresa, with her phone in hand, hesitated only a moment before heading to the gate.
Liam's Bentley was parked at the same spot, as always.. He opened the door for her. Without exchanging words, she got in the car.
As they drove away, Teresa finally asked, "Where to?"
"We're going to see some friends I grew up with," Liam replied, looking at her as if nothing really happened.
