Chapter 226
Chapter 226 Could He Turn Into a Cad?
"Sophia, what brings you to the hospital?" Diana managed to ask with a forced smile as Sophia approached, trying to contain her nerves.
"Diana, are you okay? Feeling unwell?" Sophia carefully looked her over, noticing her slightly anxious expression, and asked with concern.
"No, not at all," Diana replied with a shake of her head and a smile, "It's just my mom. She's been feeling under the weather and didn't want to come in herself, so I popped by to grab some medications for her."
"Is your mom okay, though? Is it serious?" Sophia probed further.
"It's nothing major, just a little gynecological issue. It'll clear up with some medicine," Diana reassured her, continuing to smile. She then turned the question around, "What about you? Are you here for health issues?"
"I'm fine, it's Teresa." Knowing that Diana and Teresa were best friends, Sophia didn't hide it from her and shared the upsetting news about Teresa's miscarriage.
"What? Teresa lost a baby?!" Diana gasped in shock.
But then, almost as quickly as her surprise had hit her, she regained her composure.
Just a few days ago, the gossip about Gabriel and Kay was all over the press, a hot topic for discussion. Diana tried to reach out to Teresa, but she seemed reluctant to talk, so Diana didn't press the issue.
The next day, all sorts of damaging stories about Kay surfaced, revealing that she was the initiator of the scandal with Gabriel. Once the dust settled and the truth came out, Diana felt there was no need to bring it up with Teresa again.
But she never imagined that Teresa would suffer a miscarriage.
The thought made Diana's hand instinctively move to touch her own abdomen gently.
"Yeah, she lost a lot of blood, but fortunately, she's stable now," Sophia said, her voice tinged with sorrow.
"Sophia, which room is Teresa in? I want to visit her." Taking Sophia's hand, Diana conveyed her empathy.
"Sure," Sophia replied warmly, giving Diana the room number.
They exited the clinic together and exchanged goodbyes. After Sophia drove off, Diana headed to the private ward to see Teresa.
Buzz!
Diana felt her phone vibrating in her pocket as she waited for the elevator. Pulling it out, she saw it was Liam calling.
"Liam," she answered the call straight away.
"Where are you?" Liam's voice came from his office at Evans Group Headquarters, rustling papers as he spoke.
Diana had recently been transferred to work at the Evans Group’s head office, taking the role of executive secretary to the CEO.
Hearing Liam's inquiry, Diana felt a flicker of guilt. Not only that, but her emotions were a whirlpool of complexity.
She had been running errands and had decided to visit the hospital, thinking it wasn't much of a detour and wouldn't take too long. Now that Liam was asking, should she tell him the truth? Should she share the results of her check-up with him?
What would happen between them if she did? Would they continue to maintain their current professional relationship, or would it become something more?
Diana didn't dare to hope for anything beyond what they had, so after a brief hesitation, she answered, "Teresa miscarried. I was passing by the hospital and stopped in to check on her."
"Teresa had a miscarriage?!" Liam, on the other end of the phone, couldn't help but feel shocked, momentarily at a loss for how to feel.
It seemed that things between Teresa and Gabriel weren't always as sweet as they seemed. Otherwise, why would she have lost the baby? Did Teresa ever regret not marrying him but instead choosing Gabriel? Liam wondered.
"Yeah, Teresa's mother said it was an accident," Diana explained calmly.
"Okay, I got it." Liam collected himself, nodded soberly, and added, "Head back as soon as you see her and give Teresa my regards, will you?"
"Sure." Hanging up, Diana lingered at the elevator entrance, taking a while to snap back to reality.
What if she told Liam she was carrying his child? Would he stay with her, accept their baby?
Or would he insist she terminate the pregnancy or even fire her? Then, she would be unable to stay by his side.
"Miss, are you getting on?" The elevator doors began closing when someone noticed Diana still standing there, dazed. Someone kindly prompted her.
"Oh, thank you!" Diana thanked the stranger and quickly stepped into the elevator.
But as she reached the threshold of the hospital room and heard the cheerful voices of Teresa's family inside, she hesitated again.
Knocking and entering now would interrupt their happy family moment, wouldn't it?
Perhaps it was best to message her and plan a visit another day.
After a moment's hesitation, Diana turned and left.
Returning to Evans Group, it was nearly six in the evening. Not bothering with her own office, she went straight to Liam's.
Knock, knock!
“Liam."
"Come in." Liam was engrossed in some papers, not looking up as he spoke.
Diana entered with a slight smile.
"How's Teresa?" Liam asked, still not lifting his gaze as Diana approached.
"She's okay now, there's nothing to worry about." Though Liam didn't look at her, Diana kept her gaze on him.
Hearing Teresa's lively voice, it seemed all was well.
"Hmm." Liam nodded, finished reading his document, signed his name at the bottom right corner, leaned back in his chair, and finally looked up at Diana, "I have a social engagement tonight. Come with me?"
"Sure," Diana agreed without hesitation.
As long as she was by Liam's side, whatever it was, she was more than willing, more than happy.
Diana opened her mouth as if to speak to Liam, but the words seemed to catch in her throat, swallowed back before they could escape.
"Something on your mind?" Liam inquired, sensing her hesitation.
"No, nothing," Diana smiled, "I'll head out unless you need me for something."
She couldn't risk it. It was better to stay silent until she could be sure. It was better to wait for the right moment.
