Chapter 243 Biggest Regret
“Where are you?"
Liam had lunch with Tessa and was on his way back to the office when he suddenly got a call from Gabriel.
“On my way back to the office. What's up?" Liam responded, ever so succinctly as was typical between the brothers.
“Yeah, something's come up. I'm heading to your office. I should be there in about twenty minutes."
“All right." After the call, Liam instructed his driver to step on it, trying to get back to the office before Gabriel.
Thankfully, traffic was light, and Liam made it back to his office before Gabriel, and then asked his PA to wait for Gabriel downstairs.
What he didn't expect, however, was that just a few minutes later, not only Gabriel arrived but also Teresa, her eyes red and brimming with anger.
“Teresa, what's wrong?" Liam rose from his executive chair as they entered his office, walked around his desk, and furrowed his brows at Teresa.
Teresa shook off Gabriel's firm grip and stormed over, cutting straight to the chase, “Did you know Diana is pregnant with your child?"
Gabriel followed Teresa, his hand casually in his pocket, his eyes brooding as he stared at Liam, silent but clearly protective.
Looking at Teresa, who came to confront him over Diana, Liam's handsome brows knotted in an instant, “Teresa, about the baby, yesterday Diana told me..."
“So, you knew?" Fury was boiling over, and Teresa didn’t allow Liam to finish.
“I knew, but..."
Smack!
Before Liam could finish his sentence, Teresa's hand flew and delivered a stinging slap across his face. The crisp sound filled the expansive office, leaving not just Liam dazed but Gabriel, too, caught off guard for a moment.
And then, Gabriel's lips curled into a smile. That was his darling Teresa, unmistakably clear in her love and hate. He liked that.
“Do you have any idea that Diana went to the hospital for an abortion and nearly died from a severe flu?" Teresa asked furiously, her handprint still stinging on his face. “Where were you while she was dancing with death because of you?"
Abortion? That quickly? That was certainly not something Liam had seen coming.
“Teresa, between Diana and me...”
“Thank God I didn't choose you," she cut him off, unwilling to hear his excuses. “Otherwise, the one hurt right now wouldn't be Diana. It might've been me."
Her words were like a knife that sliced through Liam, cleaving him in two.
“Ha...” Suddenly, he scoffed coldly at Teresa, “Do you know what my biggest regret is, Teresa?”
She didn't answer, and neither did Gabriel, who stood there silent the whole time.
He knew perfectly well what Liam was thinking.
“It's that nothing happened between us. If it had, you wouldn't be in love with Gabriel. You'd be in love with me.” He pronounced each word sharply, his gaze locked with Teresa's silent shock.
Gabriel couldn't help but smirk, a pleased grin dancing on his lips. So, Teresa was meant for him and nobody else.
“Don't you dare touch Diana again or hurt her otherwise, you'll just make me despise you.” With that, Teresa turned to leave.
“Teresa...”
“Don't touch me!”
As she spun around, Liam reflexively reached out, trying to grab her wrist. But before Gabriel could step in to stop him, Teresa shook off Liam's hand with a fierce shout.
“Could you send my apologies to Diana? I’ll do my best to make it up to her,” Liam said, his heart shattering like glass, making it hard to breathe in the face of her anger and disgust.
“If you want to apologize, do it yourself.” She glanced back at Gabriel and then said softly, “Let's go.”
“Okay.” Gabriel wrapped his arm around her, planting a firm kiss on the top of her head, and then they left together.
Watching them embrace intimately, Liam closed his eyes, suddenly feeling tears moistening his lashes.
...
When Teresa returned to Diana's room at the hospital, Diana was already awake, propped up in bed, staring blankly out the window. Even as Teresa and Gabriel approached, it seemed as though Diana didn't notice them at all.
“Honey, you go on to the office. I'll stay with Diana for a bit," Teresa whispered to Gabriel at the doorway after casting a caring glance at Diana.
Diana was still reeling from the deep wounds Liam had inflicted. Teresa couldn't let Diana see her and Gabriel being affectionate now it might upset Diana even more.
“All right, I'll be in the car,” Gabriel said gently, planting a kiss on top of Teresa's head before nodding in agreement.
Gabriel could work as usual from the car, making video conference calls, so Teresa nodded, watched him leave, and then turned her attention to Diana.
“Diana,” Teresa called out softly with a warm smile after making sure Gabriel had left. She sat down at the bedside. “Are you hungry? I can have someone bring you something to eat.”
“Teresa, do you think I'm just silly, laughably so?” Diana's vacant gaze found focus and a faint light as she asked Teresa, smiling weakly.
After Teresa's arrival, the nurse rattled off a long speech about Diana's lack of common sense, putting her life at risk by having an abortion during a severe cold. Thankfully, with Gabriel's prompt intervention, calling the chief of the hospital, they managed to exploit the best resources and save her.
