Chapter 33 Wedding canceled
"Miss, are you really okay?"
Back at home, Beatrice, concerned, questioned Teresa once more.
Teresa shook her head. "Beatrice, I'm fine. Tonight was just an accident. Please, don't tell anyone. Pretend it never happened."
She was supposed to have left the country today. If she had gone, none of tonight's events would have occurred.
As soon as Patrick recovered and was discharged from the hospital, she would leave immediately.
She believed that it was impossible that Gabriel, that scoundrel, would bother chasing her to Jena.
Once she is in Jena and Gabriel marries Unity, everything would surely settle down.
With Teresa insisting, there was no reason for Beatrice not to comply. She nodded and said, "Don't worry, Miss. Your secret is safe with me."
"Thanks, Beatrice." Teresa gave a grateful smile and asked, "Where's my brother?"
"The Young Master hasn't returned yet."
"Oh, okay." Teresa nodded, her exhaustion apparent as she turned to head upstairs.
"I'm marrying."
Upon returning to the Garcia family estate and seeing Raymond and Katherine still busy in the hall with wedding preparations, he dropped those words and headed straight for the staircase.
"What did you say?" Raymond exploded the moment he heard it.
"Son, what's wrong with you? What happened?" Katherine glanced at Raymond, then at Gabriel, her face filled with befuddlement.
"I'm calling off the wedding. It's canceled."
"Stop right there, young man!" Raymond's rage erupted as he watched Gabriel take this whole situation so lightly, paying no heed to his father's authority.
After much effort, he had smoothed things over with the Lin family from the Imperial Capital, and secured their acceptance of Unity, and Mason had given his cheerful consent. Now, Gabriel was talking about backing out of the marriage.
"Son, please, stop joking with your dad and I, okay?" Katherine implored as she looked at Gabriel, feeling utterly exasperated. "You saw for yourself today at the hospital how thrilled your grandfather was to know that he's about to meet his great-grandchild. His spirits were lifted. Now with you suddenly not wanting to get married, what are we supposed to tell him?"
"How dare you, my son? Do you think marriage is a solo affair? That you can simply marry and then just call it off or switch partners on a whim?" Raymond glared at Gabriel with a face dark as thunder. "Listen to me; even if you have a thousand, no, ten thousand reasons not to, you have no choice but to go through with this marriage."
"Son, don't be so stubborn. Think of it as getting married for your grandfather's sake, can't you just do that?" Katherine pleaded earnestly.
With Mason's unmatched prominence in the domestic business circle. Whenever he was around, everyone would regard the Garcia family with a certain wariness, so Katherine genuinely wished Mason, her father-in-law, a long and prosperous life.
"I'll let my grandpa know tomorrow."
"You wouldn't dare!" Raymond's roar was fierce. "If anything worsens your grandfather's condition or causes any unforeseen complications, you can forget about ever setting foot in this house again."
"Knock on wood! Dad will definitely live a long life." Keen to defuse the intense standoff between father and son, Katherine quickly stepped in, took hold of Gabriel's arm, and sighed in resignation, "Son, just accept this marriage for us, will you? Do it for your mother, will you?"
Gabriel looked at Kathrine, put on a weird smile, then went upstairs.
