chapter289 Wish Me A Lifetime of Togetherness
Preferring a more secure option, Diana played a different card since her first reason had fallen through. "I don't like dating younger guys. It doesn't feel stable."
That seemed like a deal-breaker.
Douglas raised an eyebrow and quipped with mock seriousness, "I might be younger, but I assure you, I'm not 'small' in any way that matters. You won't be disappointed."
At his words, Diana's mind uncontrollably flashed back to the images she'd seen that morning. Her heartbeat was erratic, so she quickly retracted her hand, bowed her head, sipped her coffee, and urged, "You better eat up. I need to head to work soon."
"You're agreeing to it?" Douglas asked, mood brightening.
Shaking her head, she gave him a piece of mentor-like advice. "You'll graduate soon. Focus on your thesis, and manage your company and the bar well. When you start making money, you can treat me to dinner."
"All right, I'll take your advice," Douglas agreed, picking up his breakfast and eating obediently.
After breakfast, they descended the stairs together and bid each other farewell, and then Diana headed straight toward the Evans Group headquarters.
Douglas offered her a ride, but she declined. She couldn't claim to be his girlfriend while still being entangled with him.
As Liam had done with her, she was determined to make a clean break, never lingering or dragging things out.
Liam was already at the office when she arrived, and she plunged into a hectic day.
Around nine in the morning, just as she was about to head out with Liam, one of her assistants rushed up with a large bunch of pink roses, handing them to her with a smile, and asked, "Are these from your boyfriend?"
Diana furrowed her brow, accepted the roses, and glanced at the card.
It was unsigned, but a message teased, "I've got fried beef steak for you tonight."
"Diana, time to go."
As Diana pondered over the line on the card, torn between irritation and joy, a strikingly familiar voice reached her from nearby.
"Oh, right." Hastily, she tucked the card back into the bouquet and handed it to her assistant with instructions to place it in her office, then quickly caught up with Liam, who had just emerged from his office and was striding toward the elevator.
"Did you and that guy from last night hit it off?" Once they were both in the elevator and the doors had slid closed, Liam asked casually as they began to descend.
Diana glanced at him, surprised.
"It seemed like that guy was really into you last night. If the feeling's mutual, you should feel free to give it a shot," Liam suggested earnestly, glancing over his shoulder at Diana standing behind him.
"On what grounds do you offer such advice, Liam?" Diana's gentle gaze hardened slightly as she looked at him, a flicker of annoyance crossing her face.
Standing before her, Liam avoided her gaze, simply tilting his head back to watch the descending elevator numbers, casually slipping a hand into his pocket. "You're a good woman," he said coolly. "You deserve better."
"Are you implying you're not good enough?" Diana challenged, her voice firm as she studied the sharp profile of his face.
Was he not good enough?
That may be the case. Otherwise, why would Teresa have chosen Gabriel?
A low, bitter chuckle escaped Liam's lips. "No matter who I end up with, my heart... it's no longer whole."
Was Liam condemned to forever hold a torch for Teresa, his heart consumed by unrequited love, regardless of who else entered his life?
Or was it that after being with so many women, each had left a mark on his heart, and no matter who he was with in the future, he'd always long for those he'd been with?
And what about her? Did she leave her mark on his heart?
"If I end up with the guy from last night, will you be happy for me?" Diana asked, a soft but stubborn smile playing across her lips.
Since Liam had already guessed that Douglas was sincere and she should boldly try it, why not accept his kind intention?
"What would count as a blessing for you?" Liam turned suddenly, looking at Diana with a severe expression.
Diana smiled, "Wish me a lifetime of togetherness, never to face betrayal again."
"All right." Liam agreed smoothly, his lips lifting earnestly as he replied, "Diana, I wish you a lifetime of togetherness, never to face betrayal again."
Diana watched him, and unexpectedly, she felt a twinge of emotion welling up in her eyes.
She didn't know if it was for herself or Liam.
Liam had been chasing after Teresa in circles for three to four years. Ultimately, he had embraced everything about Teresa, loving her unwaveringly, but had ended up with nothing. He'd inadvertently prepared the way for Gabriel.
And herself? Compared to Liam, she was doing much better.
"Thank you!"
