Chapter 15 The Strategy
When he entered, William noticed that most of his classmates were already present. But after glancing around, he didn't see Michelle and felt slightly disappointed. Nonetheless, he quickly adjusted his mood.
"William, you made it. Heard you came in a Ferrari," Richard was the first to approach him, not to flatter, but to probe.
In college, both he and William had pursued Michelle, creating a rivalry between them. They had even almost fought over her. But after Michelle went abroad, their relationship had somewhat eased.
After graduation, Richard had made a name in the entertainment industry with the support of his wealthy parents.
He wasn’t doing too badly. In just three years, he had managed to become a production director, with an annual salary of $500,000. That was quite impressive among his peers, and he even had a BMW X Series car.
He thought he was doing the best among his classmates, but to his surprise, William had a Ferrari worth over five million dollars, completely overshadowing him. That made him feel very unhappy.
"Yeah, it's a Ferrari F12 supercar," William nodded casually in response. He was not particularly fond of Richard either.
Soon, William was surrounded by other male classmates.
"Where do you work, William? How can you afford a Ferrari?" The male classmates enthusiastically pushed Richard aside and tried to get close to William.
William didn't know how to answer. He couldn't tell them the truth, that he only got the Ferrari because of his super-rich family background!
So, he had to change the subject and talk about something else with them.
While the male classmates were trying to get rich, the female classmates were enchanted.
"William has become more handsome. I like men who can drive a Ferrari with one hand."
Many female classmates were eager to get close to William, especially now that he was single again after breaking up with Madison, giving them even more of an opportunity to approach him.
"It’s a good thing you broke up with William, Madison, otherwise I wouldn't have a chance," as she spoke, a tall and attractive female classmate played with her hair and boldly walked toward William.
Madison trembled with anger, but she tried hard to suppress her jealousy and anger.
"I'll go too, count me in," soon, the other female classmates left Madison behind and converged toward William. This was a realistic problem at class reunions. Everyone would compete to flatter and get close to those with power and influence.
"Those gold-diggers are shameless! I can’t believe that even a poor man can attract their attention!" Madison was furious right now because William was trash she had discarded, but he was now a treasure in the eyes of women. It made her feel foolish, and she couldn't help but get angry.
"Don't be angry, my dear. Watch me expose him." Daniel was also displeased when he saw William being flattered.
"Yeah, he must be faking it. Maybe he borrowed or rented the Ferrari. He couldn't possibly afford a Ferrari, that's for sure." Madison refused to believe that William had suddenly became rich enough to buy a Ferrari in just a few days.
Daniel walked toward William with a cold smile.
"Hey everyone, since William has a Ferrari, he should foot the bill for this class reunion! What do you guys think?" Daniel yelled, raising his voice.
That Pwas his brilliant plan to expose William's true identity as a poor man. Since he wanted to play the part of a wealthy person, Daniel would turn the tables and make him pay, to see if this poor man could afford it
Madison's eyes lit up as she watched the scene unfold beside him.
When he heard Daniel's words, Richard, who had been at a loss for what to do, immediately brightened up and was the first to chime in. "That’s right! Since William here is so wealthy, with his five-to-six-million-dollar Ferrari, this little bill for the class reunion must be a piece of cake for him!"
Most of the classmates nodded vigorously. Each person had to contribute 500 dollars for the dinner, after all. If they let William pay, they would be able to enjoy a free meal!
Someone immediately stood up and echoed, "Yeah, William, since you have a Ferrari, why don’t you cover the costs for the class reunion?"
Although this sentiment received the approval of most classmates, a small group of people felt that it was unfair to burden William. Liam, who was close to William, didn't wait for his consent and quickly pulled him aside into a corner.
When Daniel saw Liam acting so sneaky, he silently followed a few steps behind them, leaning against a wall to eavesdrop.
"Please don't agree to this. The venue and the food for the reunion will cost at least thirty thousand dollars. And after you gave me three hundred thousand dollars from your lottery winnings, you only have two hundred thousand left. You can’t just spending thirty thousand dollars in one go. Please don't overindulge," Liam sincerely tried to stop William, worried that he might agree without thinking.
"Don't worry, I know how to handle this." William smiled slightly. This amount of money was nothing to him, so he could easily afford to treat his classmates.
Although Liam and William spoke in hushed tones, they couldn't escape the cunning Daniel's ears. Realization dawned on Daniel’s face when he heard about William's lottery win.
"So, he won five hundred thousand dollars in the lottery. That’s how he suddenly got all that money. He even gave that fat guy three hundred thousand dollars. How foolish. It’s just as I suspected. His behavior is all a show, and I bet he rented that Ferrari."
Daniel grinned.
"It must be fate that we all came back together as classmates. I'll cover the costs for today's reunion, and I’ll increase the buffet price to a thousand dollars per person," William boldly declared as he stepped forward, a faint smile on his lips.
That amount of money was not even worth mentioning for William.
As soon as he said that, all his classmates were stunned. William was incredibly loyal, generous, and truly a man of means. Both male and female classmates showered him with praise, while the female classmates secretly cursed Madison for giving up such a great catch.
When Madison saw William gaining even more popularity among his classmates, her face became even more gloomy.
"But this guy isn't our classmate, so he'll have to cover his own expenses," William pointed at Daniel, a smile playing on his lips. ‘You dared to mess with me? Well, I'll hit you back harder.’
